THIS MOVIE NEEDS A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DIGITAL OVERHAUL !!!!!!
GENTRY225 August 2002
I am a sucker for DVD and classic softcore sex films like this one. This movie like Young Lady Chatterly was meant for total DVD exploitation. Digital Sound, Digital Picture, and restored to original running time uncut. The sex scenes in this movie are not as blatant as todays' porno films but they were hot for the time period this movie was made in which was of course the celluloid using 1970's. If Anchorbay Entertainment reads this posting I pray that they take a big hint and get this movie out in a collectors edition.

Hit and Miss
augustian24 June 2003
This film must have done wonders for the tourist trade for the paradise island of Mauritius. The location shots were used to good effect and ever since I first saw this film about twenty years ago, I've wanted to go there.

The story is about the sexual awakening of a young woman (Melody) who goes to Mauritius to stay with friends. The sex scenes are handled sensitively and tastefully and cannot by any means be described as tawdry. The one scenario that I found to be unnecessary was the part when Melody wanders into a rough part of the town and witnesses a gangland fight. I don't understand why the director should have included this scene because nothing comes of it.

I agree with a previous reviewer who says that this film should be digitally enhanced on DVD. The sell-through VHS I bought suffered from colour overrun and I believe that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had clipped some scenes although I can't be sure about this last bit.

Definitely one for nostalgia trippers.

Cinemax's greatest Erotic Movie Ever!
mystery7245 March 2002
When I was a teenager,I didn't like cable until I couldn't go to sleep one night. Who wants watch a movie you just seen at the theater earlier I thought. Melody in Love changed that forever. It was and still is one of the five most erotic movies I have ever seen. It is the story of a young woman's sexual awaking and finding true love. This movie made me see cable tv in a new light. Although the plot is thin, the leads are excellently cast. Find this movie any way you can and watch it with that someone special,I know I still do!

A fair-to-middling Hubert Frank effort
lazarillo9 February 2013
German director Hubert Frank is one of the unsung greats of 1970's European softcore sexploitation film. He compares favorably in many ways to some of his more famous contemporaries like Spaniard Jesus Franco, Italian Joe D'Amato, and the Anglo-French David Hamilton. Frank's best films don't compare to Jesus Franco's best, but even his most mediocre ones (like this one) are vastly preferable to some of the un-watchable dreck Franco has foisted on the public. Like the infamous Joe D'Amato, Hubert Frank's films often contain some questionable content that may offend the sensibilities of those who prefer their sex films bland and with nothing but sex, but Frank never goes quite as far as D'Amato, who would often throw in things (bestiality, "snuff", etc.) that are downright appalling and certainly anti-erotic. Like David Hamilton, Frank was interested in coming-of-age stories, but his actresses (if not always his characters) were pretty obviously over 18 unlike those of the more pervy Hamilton. Moreover, while Frank may not have had the cinematographic talents of Hamilton (who started his career as a renowned still photographer), he certainly had a much better grasp of EDITING, and his films always move at a brisk pace rather than the positively glacial one of most of Hamilton's film work.

Like all of these other directors, Frank is certainly guilty of having some pretty insubstantial, if not downright stupid, plots. This movie is the story of a young, rather dim-witted woman "Melody O'Brien" who goes on holiday with s married, somewhat older friend. After some typically gratuitous lesbian fumblings, she falls for her married friend's male lover, and. . .well, that's about it. There are several random subplots, however. The male lover has a friend who is a handsome teacher at a girl's college and is being pursued by three of his obsessed, bicycle-riding schoolgirl students. The teacher character completely disappears from the movie, as do two of the schoolgirls, but the third, most mature-looking one winds up getting entangled with a seedy private detective and gets taken advantage of sexually by him and a lot of the rest of the male cast. She also has the best scene though where she winds up skin-diving (in literally nothing but her skin) in what look to be genuinely shark infested waters.

The main "Melody" plot ends up being less interesting than some of these random subplots. Moreover, the dubbed English version I saw also seems to be missing the most controversial scene involving "Melody" and a pubescent neighbor boy who is always spying on her when she's skinny-dipping or sunbathing nude. Still, this remains a pretty standard Hubert Frank film--breezy and sexy (if occasionally going into some pretty questionable terrritory), stupid but definitely pretty entertaining.

Melody In love
dara-irani27 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Although the plot is immature and there are many technical glitches on the film it is one of favorites because the story is very simple .also Melody is very attractive and soft porn scenes have been carefully filmed.you will enjoy the scenery and also the beautiful body of the cast . besides the last scene when Melody makes love with a young boy is amazing. It is a must see soft porn especially if you are heading to Mauritius. It has a chance for much more professional re-make with young cast and up to date technology. Unfortunaley film has been dubbed to English and many beautiful scenes have been cut. At the end when Alain abandons Melody she turns to a young boy who lives nearby and offer him sex. The young boy is really stunned but seemed relax during the scene .At the final scene Melody looks very satisfied of a new love with the young boy.

This movie is probably one of the best Cinemax ever had. Very attractive actors and very athletic performances. The version I saw was dubbed so I'm not sure about the subtitled version. It is maybe more racy......

Where to find it so I can see it again?

It is a film that brings back fond memories of my youth and I think it is on the exact limit between too much and too little of sexual awakening without vulgarity. I believe that many will rush to purchase this tape, if they knew where they could buy it.
