Unleashed on theaters in 1988, director Tom Holland's "Child's Play" introduced America to Chucky, a My Buddy-like doll inhabited by the soul of a foul-mouthed serial killer. Equal parts absurd and frightening, that first movie spawned six sequels, a remake, and a TV series. Of all the iconic '80s horror villains, he's the only one still written by his original creator, Don Mancini. As such, the TV series has brought back many actors and characters from throughout the franchise's history, in an increasingly complicated -- and refreshingly LGBTQ-positive -- narrative of epic proportions. A narrative that involves Devon Sawa playing multiple roles, for some reason.
Fans of the show know where some of the original film's cast members ended up, but what about the rest? Shot in Chicago, "Child's Play" made use of several local stage talents, as well as a few veteran actors and familiar faces. Can you...

The big-scale Cinerama fantasy once thought unrecoverable is back — a terrific restoration brings us George Pal’s ode to fairy tales, filmed on Bavarian locations with an international cast. Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm are the brothers that compiled the famed tales of princesses, witches, magic spells and fiery dragons. Their idealized biography is interspersed with three full fairy tale stories, about a magic cloak of invisibility, a cobbler’s helpful elves, and a pair of fearless dragon slayers. The show has dancing, beautiful locations, a sequence with Puppetoons and a terrific animated dragon. Featured stars are Claire Bloom, Walter Slezak, Barbara Eden, Oscar Homolka, Martita Hunt, Yvette Mimieux, Russ Tamblyn, Jim Backus, Terry-Thomas and Buddy Hackett; a long-form docu goes into fascinating detail explaining how Dave Strohmaier and Tom March accomplished the mind-boggling restoration.

It's a big week for Stephen King fans! Yesterday, the author shared an excerpt from his upcoming book, "Fairy Tales." Today, we're learning from Deadline that a book he released last year, "Later," will be adapted into a limited series starring Lucy Liu.
Blumhouse Television has the rights to the story, which follows a boy named Jamie who talks to the dead. "Later" shares some common ground with "The Shining" and references another major King work, but it's also an engrossing New York City-set crime novel. Though Liu's role has not been mentioned, the book's other main character is Tia, Jamie's mother. Tia is...

“Tuca & Bertie” has been renewed for Season 3 at Adult Swim.
The show debuted its second season on Adult Swim on June 13. The first season had aired on Netflix, but the streamer canceled the show in 2019. The final two episodes of Season 2 will air on Aug. 8 and Aug. 15 respectively. Adult Swim has also secured the international rights for Seasons 2 and and 3, now making the show available globally via the brand.
Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) and Bertie (Ali Wong) are best friends, and they’re both full of ghosts. Bertie is busy excavating her inner ghouls with the help of a therapist, while Tuca prefers to stuff hers behind the toilet. She’ll deal with them later, right now she’s just too busy trying not to be single anymore. Meanwhile, Speckle (Steven Yeun) is building a new house but soon finds he’s driven to the brink of insanity.

Anime has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade as it’s progressively evolved from a niche interest into mainstream entertainment. There are now more places than ever to consume anime, whether it’s on broadcast television or any of the available streaming services, some of which are devoted entirely to anime content.
It’s truly exciting to see the medium’s continued success, but part of the reason that it’s found such universal acclaim is because often anime is just as concerned about representation as it is with entertainment. Anime doesn’t just speak to everyone, but specifically highlights those that may get overlooked elsewhere and feel like their voices are diminished.

Adult Swim has become the primary destination for the weirdest and most ambitious animated programs on television and their latest series, JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales is no exception to the rule. The show takes the subversive, experimental comedy and animation of JJ Villard and pairs it together with the innocence of children’s fairy tales.
The end result is something truly unique that manages to push old-fashioned fairy tales to unexpected and outrageous. This series has a very dangerous energy that helps make this animated show stand out and feel different. In honor of JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales upcoming invasion of Adult Swim, the series creator, JJ Villard himself, takes some time to discuss his new show’s origins, the heavy horror influence on the program, and where future seasons might be headed.

If the story of a unscrupulous crook who rises to great political power hits a little too close to home these days, consider that in 1940’s The Great McGinty the mobster in question is a fundamentally decent gent who sacrifices his career to do the right thing. When the jig is up he high-tails it to the border, penniless but with a clean conscience. Current events require that Preston Sturges’ bittersweet political satire be filed under Fairy Tales.
The movie opens in a rowdy little dive in South America where the once and future lowlife Dan McGinty has made his new home, lording over the bar while dispensing equal amounts booze and wisdom. One poor fellow wanders in who could use a little of both.

After five years of combining animated short subjects, and a combo live-action/animation feature, Disney dove into full feature animation fantasy again with the most basic of Fairy Tales. Just because he learned to create animation for a price doesn’t mean that the quality slacked off — the wondrous design and animation is augmented by terrific songs. Yes, half the picture is about cute mice and birds and other critters … which are done so well, the show is worth seeing multiple times. This handsome Signature Collection release follows earlier Diamond and Platinum releases … and don’t ask me to decode that classification system.

The sins of the flesh have always been right there on the surface of Fairy Tales, waiting to be ravaged by sex and by violence, by finger and by claw. Crooked old ladies morph into comely lasses, and ripe red lips are ready to be plucked and plundered. Snow White didn't move in with seven little dudes by mistake -- whatever our imaginations can imagine, whatever wishes our hearts can make, they're all within reach for a price, endless sleep and poisoned apples. Anne Fontaine's White as Snow is just the latest in a long string of movies soft-coring up our princess fantasies...

Fat Tuesday isn’t just for the furless — pets love to celebrate, too.
Each year in Mandeville, Louisiana, local canines gather together for the Mardi Paws Parade. Every dog is welcome to attend this celebration of canine couture and revelry; this year it’s on Feb. 18 with the theme “Fables, Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes.”
As the pup participants walk, wheel and wag their way down the parade route, they also throw out goodies like stuffed animals, beads and rubber poops to the gathered masses. After the procession is complete, the best dressed dogs are awarded “poop trophies” created by local artist Fermanda Cristiani.

Many people - most, I might even hazard to say - believe they have a handle on the works of Hans Christian Andersen. They know him, after all, despite having never really read him, the lack of direct exposure overwhelmed by the knowledge that he was the man responsible for The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckiling. And there you have it! Fairy tales! Good, wholesome reading for kids! But judging Andersen that way would be a lot by judging the work of Roald Dahl based purely on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory or The Bfg. Sure, they wrote those, but there's a whole lot of other stuff that they wrote and things can skew a whole lot darker than you may expect. And when...

Fairy tales are ripe fodder for films, especially short films, and Indian director Bhargav Saikia knows a good fairy tale when he reads it. His latest short film The Black Cat, an adaptation of Indian author Ruskin Bond's short story. Quiet, mysterious, with (yes) an adorable but perhaps a little evil cat, the film ahs been making the rounds at film festivals this year, and is now available to watch online. Mr. Bond buys an interesting broom at one of his favourite shops. But the broom comes with an unexpected addition in the form of a strange black cat that seems intent on staying with its new unwilling owner. Saikia takes his time with the tale, paying great attention to detail, and drawing the viewer...

Doc NYC, the largest documentary festival in America, kicked off its latest edition this week with its annual Visionaries Tribute. Co-founder Thom Powers opened the ceremony with the following speech.
One year ago, our community was gathered at the Visionaries Tribute two days after Donald Trump was elected. In that dark moment, I know many people in this room took strength from being among great storytellers, feeling that documentary-making had an important role to play.

Christian Petzold's The State I Am In (2000) and Christoph Hochhäusler's The City Below (2010) will be showing in September and October, 2017 on Mubi in most countries around the world.Christian Petzold (left) and Christoph Hochhäusler (right) on the set of Dreileben. Photo by Felix von Böhm.We meet in Christian Petzold’s office in Berlin-Kreuzberg. A giant wall of whispering books, almost like a Borgesian brain of fiction, encircles the table at which Christoph Hochhäusler, myself and the owner take place to discuss their films. The idea of the interview was to get Petzold’s take on Hochhäusler’s The City Below (2010) and Hochhäusler’s take on Petzold’s The State I Am In (2000). In the end, both filmmakers ended up talking about a lot more, as cinema for them has always been something that shines most brightly when remembering it, discussing it and loving it. The fictions proposed...

Fresh off its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, “The Shape of Water” has a new clip. Guillermo del Toro’s follow-up to “Crimson Peak” has garnered positive reactions so far, with IndieWire contributor Ben Croll calling it one of the director’s “most stunningly successful works” as well as “a powerful vision of a creative master feeling totally, joyously free.” Watch the clip, in which Sally Hawkins discovers the merman played by Doug Jones, below.

Here’s del Toro’s statement on the film: “Fairy tales were born in times of trouble, in complicated times—when hope felt lost. I made ‘The Shape of Water’ as an antidote to cynicism. For it seems to me that when we speak of love—when we believe in love—we do so in a hopeless way.

For the past several years, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has been experimenting with some pretty big, outlandish ideas. If you take a look at the trend in his original films, The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar, you can see a trend there that delves both inwards and outwards of the human psyche. For a man who’s tackled the deepest depths of the imagination, as well as the farthest reaches of outer space…where would he go next?
For his latest film, Dunkirk, Nolan has his most grounded subject matter yet in the form of a relatively obscure rescue mission that, to my knowledge, has received little to no screen time in decades past. However, if you were going into this hoping for something along the lines of Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge, or even Apocalypse Now, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Dunkirk, it seems, was little more than a setting for...

Image Source: Getty / Bettmann Fairy tales might not be real, but Grace Kelly came as close as a person can to truly living one. The Rear Window actress, who grew up in an affluent Philadelphia family, ended up leaving behind her booming Hollywood film career to marry a real-life royal, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, after a whirlwind year of courtship. So, how did Grace meet Prince Rainier, exactly? Well, there likely never would have been a connection between the two without the Cannes Film Festival. Ahead of the glamorous annual movie event in 1955, biographers have claimed that Prince Rainier was looking for an American wife specifically. Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis allegedly suggested he marry Marilyn Monroe, who was apparently keen on the match herself, but the prince rejected the idea since he didn't find her public image dignified enough for his family (though it has never been confirmed...

The Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes this year was enlivened by the fortuitous programming of a number of films about children channeling the bounding energy of their young protagonists, whether Sean Baker’s precocious “hidden homeless” scampering around cheap motels in Orlando in The Florida Project, Jonas Carpignano’s bracing faux-adults spitting slang and smoking cigs in a Romani community in Siciliy in A Ciambra, or the young Joan of Arc, singing and dancing in Bruno Dumont’s Jeannette.More passive than all these kids so willing to act out in difficult circumstances is Shula (Maggie Mulubwa), the young Zambian girl accused of witchcraft in Zambia-born, Wales-based director Rungano Nyoni’s bold debut feature, I Am Not a Witch. In fact, this young girl has no name and is nearly unable to speak up for herself. In the film’s opening scenes, she is accused of being a witch and, failing to deny it,...

At this point, with 30 Oscar wins behind her, what does the outspoken Barnard and Yale Drama grad have to lose? March 15th isn’t a day when one would typically expect an announcement for PlayStation Plus – much like Microsoft and Games With Gold, Sony tends to keep its lineup firmly under lock and key until the month’s end – but Ps Blog unwrapped a welcome surprise today: Drawn to Death, the über-stylish shooter from industry veteran David Jaffe and The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency, will headline April’s Ps Plus lineup.
Now pegged for April 4th, Ps Plus subscribers will be able to download the third-person shooter via the Instant Game Collection the moment it goes live, and Jaffe is hoping that the decision to launch Drawn to Death via Sony’s premium service – a tactic that evokes memories of Psyonix and Rocket League – will help garner interest and, ultimately, foster a community.
Per Ps Blog, there’s also mention of five new features that have been added since the game’s testing rounds.

Scott Sheppard’s latest documentary “An Act of Love” follows Reverend Frank Schaefer, who had his ministerial credentials revoked in December 2013 after officiating his son’s same-sex wedding. Though Schaefer had no intention of getting involved in the Lgbt debate, he was inevitably thrust into the fight for equality when his son Tim came out of the closet. Schaefer eventually officiated Tim’s wedding in a small, private service in Massachusetts, but eventually word got back to his small Pennsylvania town and the United Methodist Church put him on trial. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.
