- Mili (Jaya Bhaduri) is a story about a girl who suffers from pernicious anemia, a disease considered not treatable at the time. Mili lives in an apartment colony in Bombay with her father Mr. Khanna (Ashok Kumar) & her widowed Bua Sharda (Usha Kiran) & her brother Ranjeet (Suresh Chatwal) (who is in the army). Ranjeet has just returned home after having been awarded the Vir Chakra. The family has hope that Mili's condition will be treatable in the future with in-going research in the field. Mili is being treated by family physician Dr Sanjay (Parikshit Sahni).
Mili is the heart and soul of the colony and practices her singing on the terrace every evening. She is friendly with all the kids of the colony, who also love her. Mili is the barometer of the entire colony and when she is upset, the whole colony gets worried about her well-being.
Ranjeet loves a divorcee, Runa (Aruna Irani), who lives in the same building. Ranjeet was to start a new life with Runa, but Runa has still not emerged from the trauma of her divorce with her ex-husband Ramesh. Ramesh left Runa to marry a rich woman and as such Runa finds it very difficult to trust men anymore. Mili's neighbor (Shobha Khote) wants to get her own niece Sheila married to Ranjeet and keeps pushing her around Ranjeet.
Mili's lively, inquisitive and cheerful demeanor spreads happiness in everyone's life. She becomes an inspiration to her new neighbor Shekhar Dayal (Amitabh Bachchan) who is a drunkard and always depressed. Shekhar is the son of dead billionaire Shankar Dayal, who shot his wife & her lover & then committed suicide. The nosy neighbor calls a meeting of all the society women and says that Shekhar is young, good-looking and rich. He is an enticing target for all the young girls in the colony and asks everyone to be cautious.
In the beginning he is reclusive & even refuses permission to allow the building kids to play on his terrace, which irks Mili. Later that night, Mili hears Shekhar singing a very sad song in his apartment, while having a glass of a drink in his hands. The next morning, Mili hears the sound of a flute coming from Shekhar's apartment. She goes to Shekhar's apartment to welcome him to the building, but he only screams at her & says that he wants to be left alone. Gopi is Shekhar's loyal servant. Runa is the secretary of the society and Shekhar complains to her about the children making noise. Runa comes to meet Shekhar, but he insults her for wearing a provocative dress and calls her a heroine of a cheap movie. Runa is not bothered and refuses to help Shekhar with his problem.
Mili retaliates by organizing the kids & getting them to sing in the passage on the floor below. Shekhar shuts them up, but one of the kids insults him by saying that his dad killed his mom, so even he could kill anybody. Shekhar is hurt and goes back to his apartment. He decides to vacate the apartment and gives the instructions to Gopi. This is the fourth flat that Shekhar is changing within a year. Shekhar has contracted an engineer to build him a bungalow, but now wants him to expedite the same.
Mili & the kids realize their mistake & apologize to Shekhar. Shekhar relents & agrees to let the kids play on his terrace for 1 hour each day. But the society's aunts are curious about the reclusive Shekhar & keep bringing up the matter of his past which keeps driving Shekhar towards drinks & intoxication. One night Shekhar ends up cutting his wrist in despair, prompting Gopi to ask help from Mr Khanna and Mili, who give him first aid.
Shekhar is reluctant to let Mili get too close to him as he feels that even she will one day betray his trust and probe him about his past nightmares involving his parents. But something about Mili allows him to let his guard down in front of her.
One of the society's unmarried girls Sheila (the nosy neighbor's relative) had the hots for Shekhar, but Shekhar had not returned her advances, so she spread lies among all the ladies that Shekhar tried to take advantage of her under the influence of alcohol.
With her cheerful ways Mili changes Shekhar, and he falls in love with her, unaware of her ailment. Slowly Mili starts spending more & more time with Shekhar, & Shekhar likes her company as with her he forgets about his small & big problems & begins to enjoy life. But meanwhile Mili's condition deteriorates & she starts having high fever & needs blood transfusions every 4-5 days. The doctor tells her father that she doesn't have long to live, Mili overhears this conversation.
Mili's father comes to know about the budding love between Mili & Shekhar. He meets Shekhar & tells him about Mili's illness & her impending death. Shekhar thinks of going away as he cannot bear to see her die. A reproach from a neighbor makes him reconsider his decision. As he loves the girl, he offers to marry her and take her abroad for her treatment. The film begins and ends with a scene of a jet aircraft taking off, ostensibly carrying the couple to Switzerland where they hope to find a cure.
