The first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Godzilla is a kaiju of mammoth size and immense strength who leaves behind only death and ruin. What people often forget is that Godzilla is also a walking nuclear reactor. The energy beam blasts from his mouth come out as a byproduct of his internal fission reaction. Called the atomic breath, this high-temperature, kinetic energy attack has become the King of the Monsters' signature weapon over the years.
The destructive power of Godzilla's atomic breath is inconsistent. It changes with each era and each movie, according to the purpose it serves in the narrative. But in recent times, Godzilla's atomic breath has been getting astronomically stronger with his size. The strongest atomic breaths are terribly powerful and hauntingly beautiful, immortalizing moments from Godzilla's illustrious history and reminding humans of how puny they are.

We've previously heard about three brand-new dinosaurs that are reportedly set to appear in Jurassic World Rebirth - Mosasaurus, Titanosaurus and Quetzalcoatlus - and one of them has now been confirmed along with two other beasts via some leaked promo art.
Based on this toy artwork, Titanosaurus will debut in the movie, along with Maiasaura and a new take on the Spinosaurus.
A Spinosaurus previously appeared in Jurassic Park III, but this version is believed to look a lot more like the actual dinosaur that existed back in the Cretaceous period.
We're still waiting on a first trailer for Rebirth, but some supposed plot leaks have been doing the rounds online. None of them sound particularly convincing, but Fangoria has shared an interesting report about the movie's rating.
Apparently, the next Jw movie will be PG-13, but is expected to push the "brutal violence" to levels we haven't seen in any of the previous films.

Efforts to arrange a rematch between Godzilla and Hedorah have been bungled multiple times over a period of more than 50 years now. But through the Monsterverse, a chance exists for "round two" of Godzilla vs. Hedorah to finally find life on the big screen. Due to its psychedelic energy and the titular villain's odd, blob-like appearance, 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah hardly feels like a top candidate for a Monsterverse adaptation, but its central concepts could translate well to its world.
Also known as the Smog Monster, Hedorah is an alien creature who feeds off pollution and one of several Godzilla villains. His hunger led it to Earth in Godzilla vs. Hedorah. And though its looks may warn of any real danger, Hedorah did prove to be a formidable opponent for Godzilla throughout the film. Even so, Godzilla vs. Hedorah ultimately killed off the monster, and he remained a one-and-done villain...

Godzilla has been everything from an anthropomorphic anti-hero to global force of destruction and back again, but his roots have always been in horror as a dark metaphor for the dangers of nuclear war. Godzilla's original appearance in 1954's Godzilla has typically been viewed as a horror movie, given its dark subject matter and the wanton destruction of Godzilla's attacks. However, in the following years of the period recognized as the Showa Era, Toho's Godzilla evolved into a borderline silly character as they moved the character towards family-friendliness.
Since the end of the Showa Era, Godzilla's alignment has shifted between being a villain and an anti-hero, with many subsequent films choosing to ignore everything except the events of the iconic original Godzilla movie. As a result, some Godzilla movies are darker than others, with many hearkening back to the radioactive lizard's roots in horror. Ten of Godzilla's 38 movies in...

70 years of Godzilla films make for a truly titanic number of kaiju that appear across the franchise. Some of those monsters are friends of humanity, some are foes, and some go back and forth, but most importantly, they all fight. Kaiju battles are some of the most spectacular parts of these films, and that's true whether you're a fan of the modern CGI-based Monsterverse films or the classic tokusatsu films of the Showa and Heisei eras (especially with their sillier Godzilla stories).
Of course, Godzilla has the best fight record of any kaiju, but plenty of other monsters have had some impressive wins over the years. On the other hand, there are a few always-losers: the floppy-eared Baragon, overgrown shrimp Ebirah, the bug-like Megalon, Godzilla: Final Wars' menacing Monster X, and the plant-kaiju hybrid Biollante all failed to eke out even a single on-screen victory. Godzilla has played the hero more often than not in his 70-year career on the silver screen, but in one classic Toho movie he was the villain while one of his biggest rivals saved the day. Godzilla began as a terrifying destructive force, acting as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear war, but he quickly evolved into a more family-friendly heroic monster during the Showa Era of films. Some of the most underrated Godzilla movies returned him to his monstrous roots, and in one 33-year-old movie, that villainous status put him at odds with one of his greatest rivals.
Over the years, Toho has changed the alignment of many of its monsters, with very few exceptions. Mechagodzilla, for example, was an all-powerful alien weapon in his first two appearances before evolving into a human-made defense mechanism against the destruction of Godzilla on Earth. Mothra has never appeared as a true villain,...

Godzilla has been the star of countless classic kaiju clashes over his 70-year career, but mixed in with the classics are a handful of movies that can be safely skipped over. Since Godzilla first made landfall in Japan in 1954, he has evolved into one of the most famous movie characters of all time. The greater Godzilla franchise has several important movies that define the character, his enemies, and the important themes that the radioactive monster has played a role in communicating.
However, there are also several that are of very little importance to Godzilla's overall legacy. Godzilla's movie timeline has been reset many times, and as a result, some movies wound up being of little consequence. Others, particularly from Godzilla's family-friendly Showa Era in the 1960s-1970s, are overly silly and campy, making them difficult to even enjoy at times as Godzilla cuts through extremely weak monsters. Godzilla has fought countless monsters in his 70 years on the silver screen, some of which he played a direct or indirect role in creating. While there have been several major iterations of Godzilla over the decades, the original Godzilla who attacked Tokyo in 1954 has had a lasting legacy throughout the different eras of the radioactive lizard. While the main timeline of Toho's Godzilla franchise has been reset many times, the original Godzilla is often acknowledged, and sometimes used as an explanation for how the latest of Godzilla's many foes came to exist.
While Godzilla himself has never actively attempted to create a monster, his energy, his cells, and even the weapons used against him have resulted in the origin of some of the most powerful creatures that Godzilla has ever faced. Simply the fear of Godzilla has resulted in the creation of several of his most powerful foes. The...

2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the first on-screen appearance of the one and only Godzilla, and with that timing, it's worth revisiting some of the most underrated movies in his filmography. Godzilla's history is loaded with classics that G-fans universally appreciate, like Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Mothra vs. Godzilla. The radioactive lizard has also seen a revival in recent years, with Legendary's Monsterverse smashing box office records and Toho's Godzilla: Minus One winning an Oscar. However, some of the best Godzilla movies have fallen out of the public consciousness and deserve more love.

One of Godzillas defining features from 70 years on the silver screen is his ability to adapt and transform from movie to movie, and hes not alone in that regard. The transformations that have marked Godzillas history have always been an important part of the metaphorical narrative surrounding him and his monstrous contemporaries. Godzilla has most often been portrayed as an animal or dinosaur altered and enlarged by nuclear radiation, so transformation is a core element of Godzillas entire origin story. His defining traitshis size and atomic breathare direct results of his original transformation.
In addition to Big G himself, many of the monsters in Godzilla's gallery of allies and enemies are also able to change their physical appearance to suit their needs. While transformation is a foundational aspect of some monsters like Mothra or Destoroyah, others have been able to transform only once in their cinematic history with Godzilla, and under very specific circumstances.

Legendarys ever-expanding Monsterverse has already made reference to Godzillas classic Toho movies many times, but there are more powers and moves from Big Gs history that we want to see in the Monsterverse. Across Godzillas five appearances in Monsterverse shows and movies, he has used some of his most recognizable attacks to great effect, including his nuclear pulse, powerful tail whip, and different versions of his iconic atomic breath. However, with each new threat that arises, Godzilla has needed to find a new way to match their strength and battle power.
The Monsterverse has progressed from the relatively grounded Godzilla to the more fantastic and over-the-top Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. While some Godzilla fans lament the shift towards a less-serious cinematic universe, the freedom of having fewer rules in place as far as realism is concerned opens the door to some of Godzillas most iconic battle attacks. On the eve of his 70th anniversary following the release of the 1954 original, Godzilla has been a fixture on screens and various forms of media ever since allowing for people to get acclimated to his presence. As a side-effect of that constant influx of new media in films, TV shows, and comics, there’s been a fair amount of change to his looks over the years, for better or worse. Here, then, are our choices for the Top 10 Godzilla Costumes and why.

Godzilla Minus One's critical success sets it apart from other Monsterverse movies, earning praise for its visual effects and human narrative. Despite differences in tone, both Godzilla Minus One and Monsterverse films remain faithful adaptations of the iconic monster. The Monsterverse thrives on thrilling monster battles, contrasting with Godzilla Minus One's emphasis on emotional storytelling and visuals.
As impressed as I was with what Godzilla Minus One did with the King of the Monsters, I don't want it to ever have any impact on the Monsterverse. It's not been lost on me that Godzilla Minus One is on another level to most Monsterverse movies when it comes to its critical reception. Whereas movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Godzilla: King of the Monsters didn't fare well at all with critics, Godzilla Minus One received across-the-board praise. To say that it was a success feels like a huge understatement.

What's in a roar? Well, if it belongs to a ginormous prehistoric reptilian monster like Godzilla, it matters as much as what the creature represents or makes us feel. Godzilla's roar has evolved over the years — the original sound resembled a shrill "Skreeeonk!" as described in Dark Horse's "Godzilla" comics, and went on to alternate between deep, guttural sounds and high-pitched screeches that feel otherworldly. Akira Ifukube, who created the score for Ishirō Honda's "Godzilla", was the one who crafted the monster's distinctive disyllabic roar. This was not an easy task to accomplish, especially in 1954, when most creature sounds were created organically with minimal reliance on technological tweaks. How did Ifukube and Honda decide on a sound that would go on to constitute the heart and soul of such a beloved character?
For starters, Ifukube did not believe that Godzilla should roar at all, as the creature's reptilian...

Adam Wingard's new film "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has, tonally speaking, strayed far from Gareth Edwards' 2014 MonsterVerse kickoff film "Godzilla." Edwards' film was somber and sad, featuring very little "fun" monster destruction. As the MonserVerse series has progressed, however, it has crept inexorably toward a sillier tone before striking it rich with Wingard's 2021 entry "Godzilla vs. Kong." That film featured a battle between the titular titans, but also a cameo from Mechagodzilla, a monstrous robot extrapolated from the skull of the dead King Ghidorah. "GvK" also featured a fleet of human-built UFOs and a magical portal that led into the Hollow Earth, an unusual underground realm ruled by monsters.
The Hollow Earth idea is straight out of Jules Verne, but the mayhem-forward approach to a Godzilla movie comes from several of Toho's films released in the 1970s. Indeed, many critics and pundits have been comparing "GxK" to the series' Shōwa era,...

It became the first Japanese production to win the award, bookending a successful season for the film, which broke through in America in a major way. After years of the franchise’s Japanese films reaching relatively niche U.S. audiences, “Godzilla Minus One” grossed $110 million worldwide and attracted critical acclaim, bringing the franchise new fans and newfound recognition.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire honors Godzilla's roots by referencing Showa and Heisei eras in upcoming film. Godzilla's new blue nuclear pulse power in the movie is a callback to his past abilities, rooted in the Heisei era. The dangerous track record of Godzilla's nuclear pulse hints at a new power level in Godzilla x Kong sequel.
In the process of teasing the return of Godzilla's strongest power, the marketing for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has set up another classic Toho callback. While the Monsterverse has leaned heavily on original concepts and creatures, it shouldn't be forgotten that Toho's Godzilla franchise is still the framework of its universe. Movies like Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong went to great lengths to honor Godzilla's history, and Godzilla and Kong's next adventure is in a position to follow the same course.
The Monsterverse isn't hiding its connections to Godzilla's roots.

Godzilla's victory in "Terror Of Mechagodzilla" is the most impressive in his cinematic history. He fought both Titanosaurus and Mechagodzilla without any help from another monster, showing his resilience. This is the only time Godzilla has had an undisputed win over Mechagodzilla, making it historically significant.
A 49-year-old win remains the most impressive victory in Godzilla's seven decades of cinematic history. Most versions of Godzilla, though not all, have engaged in multiple monster battles. As a result, Godzilla has racked up a number of hard-fought wins over the years, many of which coming at the expense of incredibly powerful kaiju.
King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, SpaceGodzilla, Gigan, and even King Kong are counted among the giant creatures defeated by Godzilla at some point or another. Sometimes, he's even had to battle two at a time. Others he's had to beat in rematches, with Ghidorah being the monster who's faced him the most.

The taxonomy of Godzilla movies has been carefully considered and deliberately arranged for many years, cordoning off various "eras" of Godzilla movies — eras named after Japanese emperors — into their own, neatly distinguishable chronologies. 1954's "Gojira" through 1975's "Terror of Mechagodzilla" constitute the Showa era, encompassing 15 films. The series was rebooted in 1984 with "Return of Godzilla," and the second era, the Heisei era, ran through "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995. Roland Emmerich's 1998 English-language "Godzilla" is an oddity in that it exists outside of an era or a continuity. 1999 through 2004 — that is: "Godzilla 2000" through "Godzilla: Final Wars" — constitutes the Millennium era, although the continuity of one of the films in that era is questionable.
2016's "Shin Godzilla," like Emmerich's film, also exists in its own continuity. A trilogy of animated Godzilla films, also in its own universe, was released in 2017 and 2018. And, of course, the American Monsterverse series has been humming...

Some monsters in the Godzilla franchise have never won a fight, despite their formidable appearances and abilities. Many monsters in Godzilla's universe have come out on top in a fight, sometimes even defeating Godzilla himself. Monsters like Ebirah, Hedorah, Titanosaurus, Baragon, Varan, Manda, Megalon, Orga, Megaguirus, and Gigan have all suffered losses in battles against Godzilla or other kaiju.
Regardless of how formidable they may seem, some monsters in the Godzilla franchise have never won a single fight. Whether it's because they're always matched up against the King of the Monsters or the conditions weren't fair to begin with, quite a few kaiju have never been able to taste victory. In the case of some, they only had one chance to beat Godzilla and couldn't pull it off.

Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard confirms the film will include Easter eggs referencing the late Shwa era of Godzilla movies. The Shwa era depicted Godzilla as a protector battling dangerous monsters, and these later entries informed the Monsterverse. The film may feature references to Mechagodzilla, other monsters, and the superhero style of the Shwa era. Fans should keep their eyes open for nods to Toho classics.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard has teased the upcoming movie will be full of Easter eggs honoring the oldest era of Godzilla movies. The upcoming film will see its titular Titans face off against the Skar King, a red ape that threatens the safety of humanity. Given the history both characters have, there will likely be plenty of callbacks to their original movies.

Godzilla has had 11 different movie continuities, showcasing his evolution from villain to hero and protector of Japan. The Godzilla franchise has been subject to numerous sequels and reboots, with some movies connected canonically and others existing apart from the rest. The current Godzilla timelines include the MonsterVerse, which integrates the 1954 movie into its canon, and the new Toho version in Godzilla Minus One, which presents a standalone story for the monster.

U.S. audiences tend to accept Toho's earlier Godzilla movies as being high camp, usually thanks to Gen-x's half-remembered airings of late-'60s kaiju flicks broadcast on Uhf TV channels back in the 1980s. While there are some absurd and terrible Godzilla films from the Showa era (1954-1975), and many of them contained surreal, kitschy plot elements like invading aliens, one might also find several movies -- "Gojira," "Destroy All Monsters" -- that focus on Japanese national pride, the role of destructive weapons in the world, and a barely-simmering resentment lingering after a massive attack on the country. If modern superhero movies sprung from the U.S. subconscious as a fantastical revenge/preventative measure against 9/11, so too did Godzilla spring fully formed from the trauma left behind by the U.S.' atomic bomb attacks.
In the original "Gojira," that is literal. The titular creature, a stories-high amphibious animal,...

Godzilla's team-ups with other monsters have provided entertaining action in the franchise. Some kaiju team up because they are so powerful in battle that it takes multiple monsters to take them down. Team-ups can make these kaiju an unstoppable force, but they are still often weaker than Godzilla himself.
Over the years, the Godzilla franchise has featured an abundance of powerful kaiju team-ups. One-on-one showdowns are a stable of Godzilla’s movies, but they’re not the only way the films have provided entertaining action. Some kaiju, including Godzilla, have been known to team up with other monsters to win.

A classic Toho villain would make for a great addition to the MonsterVerse – if he was introduced as a hero. So far, Legendary has only adapted two members of Godzilla’s rogues’ gallery into his MonsterVerse films. Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla stand alone in this regard, but should receive more company the longer the MonsterVerse continues.
In terms of picking which villains to use next, Toho has no shortage of exciting options. Several sport interesting designs that wouldn’t need much reworking (if at all) to be translated to Godzilla and Kong’s cinematic world. Destoroyah, Gigan, and Biollante are all excellent examples of classic Godzilla villains that deserve representation in the MonsterVerse. Other, lesser-known antagonists, such as Hedorah and Megalon, could also work out well for a Godzilla movie, if used correctly. One villain, though, would be much better off being introduced as a hero.

One of Stephen King's stories inspired a key part of Godzilla's 1990s movies. As one of the most noteworthy horror novelists of the modern era, Stephen King has been counted as an influence on a number of movies, books, and shows in the genre. And apparently, that also extends to a string of Godzilla movies released between 1989 and 1995.
More than a decade after bringing the Godzilla movie series to a close with 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla, Toho pressed the reset button on the character with Return of Godzilla in 1984 which gave rise to a new take on the King of the Monsters. The movie is what kicked off what is now known as the Heisei series, which released most of its installments during the 1990s. The Heisei series, which encompasses seven movies, ended with 1995's Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. It's remembered for creating some of Godzilla's toughest battles, its approach to Godzilla's design,...

Godzilla feature films can be separated into six separate, distinct continuities. From Toho's 1954 original "Gojira" until "Terror of Mechagodzilla" in 1975, there were 16 films in the "Showa" era. Beginning in 1984 with "The Return of Godzilla" and running until "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995, was the "Heisei" era. Roland Emmerich's 1998 American film was, after the fact, folded into a new rebooted continuity which began in 2000 with "Godzilla 2000." That was the "Millennium" era. That era ran until 2004 and closed out with "Godzilla: Final Wars," a film where Godzilla fights just about every monster imaginable. In 2014, America took a crack at kaiju films again with a new "Godzilla," now part of a multi-film "MonsterVerse" era. Perhaps in response, Japan made "Shin Godzilla" in 2016, the only film to date in the "Shin" era. Shortly after "Shin Godzilla," there was also a trilogy of animated films on Netflix. Call those films the "Netflix" era.

It's not often that Godzilla doesn't come out on top in fight, but there have been occasions where the King of the Monsters has met his end. Through more than 60 years of cinematic history, the Japanese pop culture icon has appeared in over 30 live-action movies at this point. However, he's only actually died in four of them.
True to his title, Godzilla typically prevails in most of his fights - even when he's the main villain. Kaiju as powerful as King Ghidorah, Biollante, and Gigan have all failed to bring him down, but not for a lack of trying. As for the humans in his movies, they're usually unable to stop him from running amok in Japan. But in spite of Godzilla's seemingly unbeatable nature, his record is far from flawless. He's lost fights before, and has even been outright killed. Here's every incident where Godzilla died, and exactly how it happened.

this article contains spoilers for godzilla vs. kong.
It may not have quite the cache or iconic status of Mothra or King Ghidorah, but Mechagodzilla has managed to become a consistent element in the Godzilla movie universe for years. And now the metallic wonder makes its Hollywood debut (not counting Ready Player One) in director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the fourth film in the modern MonsterVerse that kicked off in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla.
Ever since making its first appearance in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the gigantic robotic reptile has stuck around as a relatively constant thorn in the side of his flesh-and-blood counterpart. If Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra are the Joker, Penguin, and Catwoman to Godzilla’s Batman, then Mechagodzilla hovers near the top of the second tier of rogues, the equivalent to a Two-Face or Mr. Freeze.

Even before I’d seen a single Godzilla movie, I knew Mechagodzilla was my favorite damn thing in the entire franchise. Because really, how could it not be? Regardless of its incarnation, Mechagodzilla is still a giant robot shaped like a monster. There are few things in entertainment that are quite that perfect, and it seems that pop culture agrees. Mechagodzilla has become something of a series icon, up there with King Ghidorah and Mothra as one of the most recognizable non-Godzilla kaiju in the franchise. Yet all legends have to start somewhere, and for Mechagodzilla, it was in the fourteenth film of the franchise, Jun Fukuda’s aptly titled Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974).

He was the ultimate threat.

After 16 movies, Godzilla 1985 stomped a fine line between sequel, remake, and reboot. In that regard, it was ahead of its time.
In the early ‘70s it became clear to everyone, audiences and Toho executives alike, that the once-majestic Godzilla franchise was taking a precipitous slide down the crapper. There were reasons for this. A number of behind-the-scenes figures fundamentally responsible for the films’ early greatness (most notably director Ishiro Honda and special effects genius Eiji Tsuburaya) either left the franchise for other projects or died. Combine that with shrinking budgets that hit the special effects department first, and the on-screen results started looking pretty shabby. Increasingly tattered monster costumes were re-used from film to film; once-elaborate miniature cities became rows of balsa wood boxes, and as a last resort, fight scenes from earlier films were edited into new films to save time and money.
Beyond that Godzilla himself had changed,...

The headline says it all. Expect more and more classic Godzilla titles to find their way to Blu-ray in the coming months as the May release of the big budget American reboot approaches.
Even King Kong is getting some hi-def lovin’ thanks to the King of the Monsters' resurgence.
King Kong vs. Godzilla may not ever get critical respect, but it has more than earned its status as one of the all-time great b-movies. The forerunner to the Alien vs. Predator, Freddy vs. Jason, Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys, and Batman vs. Superman of today, the King of the Monsters and the 8th Wonder of the World squared off for the one and only time in this 1963 Toho monsterpiece.
Synopsis:
When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks...
