One day after the release of her third studio album, Radical Optimism, Dua Lipa pulled double duty as host and musical guest of Saturday Night Live. Though her overall screen time constituted over 36% of the May 4 episode, her specific sketch time of less than 16 minutes is the lowest for a Season 49 host so far.
Scroll down to see how Lipa stacked up against each of the show’s named performers, including surprise guests Jerry Seinfeld and Troye Sivan. Note that our screen time data is calculated using a method that prioritizes face time, meaning that any contiguous (off-screen but in-scene) moments and practically all partial body appearances do not count. Screen time in the show’s opening credits, bumpers and goodnights are not included, nor do those portions factor into our assessment of the episode’s total running time.

Recording artist Dua Lipa just released her latest album this past week, so there's no better time for the pop star to pull double duty as the host and musical guest of "Saturday Night Live." Of course, her first time taking on the honor unfortunately comes after Ryan Gosling hosted a banger of an episode, packed with viral gems like the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch. But if your expectations were firmly in check, then you probably enjoyed this lukewarm, fairly amusing but not raucously hilarious episode of "SNL."
Thankfully, Dua Lipa turned out to be a solid host alongside her musical guest duties. She was game to jump into a variety of characters, didn't severely derail any sketches with subpar performances, and she was even willing to make jokes at her own expense during the monologue. However, the sketches were not exactly of the highest quality, and though Dua Lipa did her best,...

When Universal decided to jump on the first weekend of May, a slot normally taken up by Marvel’s popular superhero movies, they were hoping the combo of “Barbenheimer” stars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would make “The Fall Guy” a huge early summer hit. That’s not what happened. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, “The Fall Guy” had everything going for it, from two of the biggest Oscar-nominated stars from 2023’s biggest blockbusters – one who recently hosted “Saturday Night Live” to great success – plus reviews had been great going back to its premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival. Universal even screened the movie for exhibitors (i.e. theater owners) at the annual CinemaCon to get excitement going for the start of the summer movie season.

Dua Lipa knows how to bring the party. And apparently it runs in the genes. While making her “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut last night, the award-winning pop star acknowledged how she’d made her television debut in the same building eight years ago and gave a special shoutout to her parents — who were in the audience cheering her on — telling a story about an unlikely run-in she had with her folks one night.
“As you can see,” she said, “they’re kind of cool. They love to party. One night, I was out with my friends and we ended up at the club at three o’clock in the morning and who do I bump into but my parents. Which is embarrassing, cause the last thing you want to see when you’re super high and drunk-off-your-ass is your daughter.”
The punchline got a huge laugh, particularly from her parents up in the balcony.

Overview of the Controversial SNL Sketch During a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, a sketch featuring Chloe Fineman as JoJo Siwa stirred significant controversy. Dressed in an all-black ensemble mimicking Siwa’s look from her music video for ‘Karma,’ Fineman’s portrayal raised eyebrows and sparked debates about the line between humor and bullying. Public Reaction to the SNL Portrayal The sketch prompted mixed reactions from the audience, with some viewers accusing SNL of crossing into bullying territory. A highlight was Fineman jesting, That’s right, Colin; I’m a bad girl now! This mimicked Siwa’s recent transformation into a more adult persona,

Transformation from Sparkles to Edgy Glitter JoJo Siwa, once known for her vibrant, sparkling persona on the reality show Dance Moms, has recently unveiled a darker, more mature style that speaks volumes about her evolution. Her appearance in black glitter attire at a recent Saturday Night Live sketch, where Chloe Fineman portrayed her, emphasized this change dramatically. As Siwa steps into adulthood, she is keen on shedding her child star label to embrace a bolder aesthetic. This shift is evident in her latest works, including the music video for Karma, where she sports a look starkly different from her usual

As soon as "Challengers" hit theaters last week, we had a feeling "Saturday Night Live" would be planning some sort of parody around it. Although not a major box office hit, the movie is huge on social media thanks to how absurdly horny and chaotic its love triangle is. It's a conversation-starter for sure, not to mention it's filled with some memorable churro-based phallic imagery.
Although "SNL" sadly couldn't get the movie's lead stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, or Josh O'Connor to host an episode, they have given us the next best thing with a "Challengers"-themed sketch. Only this time, the love triangle's based around Sonny Angel dolls instead of tennis, and Bowen Yang is one of the dolls. Using some charmingly clumsy practical effects and the movie's "stressful but horny" soundtrack, the live sketch lets us watch as Yang's tiny character flirts and argues with Hernández's boyfriend character,...

Ryan Gosling is currently all over the headlines for his latest release alongside Emily Blunt, titled The Fall Guy. The actor’s promotion for the David Leitch directorial has now found itself in Jerry Seinfeld’s joke at Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. The stand-up comedian also did his round of promotion recently for his feature directorial debut Unfrosted.

When Jerry Seinfeld appeared in SNL‘s Weekend Update, he was introduced by the host Colin Jost as the “man who did too much press”. The Seinfeld star has been spotted in several public outings to promote his latest Netflix release which is loosely based on the origin of pop tarts. Seinfeld joked that Ryan Gosling should not do so much press or he would also be like him.

Ya know that feeling when you watch something dumb, and even though you know it’s stupid, you can’t help but laugh and enjoy yourself? The 1980s are full of comedies like that. Yeah, we know they’re dumb and not especially clever, but whatever, man, every now and then, you’re in a bad mood, and you want to turn your brain off. That’s why they made seven Police Academy movies. No one thought they were good, but we watched them anyway because they were stupid in a pleasing way.

Dua Lipa has been in the entertainment industry for a long time and throughout her career, the singer-songwriter has faced several forms of criticism. From her singing to her dancing, there always seems to be something that she does wrong. However, the greatest criticism she has ever faced was back in 2018, when one comment on her performance video went viral and birthed one of the most popular memes of all time, Go Girl Give Us Nothing.
Dua Lipa (Image: Instagram | @dualipa)
Although Lipa was initially hurt by the meme, she recently gave a befitting retort to her haters in her SNL monologue. And netizens can’t help but declare her as the Goat for her response and the way she handled the situation.

Dua Lipa went all in on Saturday Night Live for the NBC show’s May 4 episode.“I’m here, I’m hosting, I’m performing, I’m making the wigs, I’m dealing Adderall to the writers, I’m doing it all,” she said in her opening monologue. “So tonight, I promise you, I’m gonna give you everything.” She also dealt out Radical Optimism — the name of her new album — to audience members in tough spots… though she couldn’t help South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (played by Heidi Gardner). Check out highlights from Lipa’s episode below. Here’s a little observation, bordering on an axiom, which has slowly developed over the years—as in, approximately half a century:
When Saturday Night Live returns from a hiatus, the first show back struggles to find both its rhythm and sketches that are well conceived and consistently funny.
SNL’s return last night carried with it a special challenge, because the last show before the break, hosted by Ryan Gosling, was arguably the funniest of the season, with one sketch, the Beavis and Butthead unaware look-a-likes, now the most-viewed clip of the current season.
And so, when the cold open tiptoed into risky territory, trying to find a way to get laughs out of the divisive and decidedly unfunny protests against the war in Gaza, a familiar sense of “oh it’s that hiatus issue” set in.
It even seemed as though the writers were sending a signal about...

Dua Lipa joked around about the “give us nothing” meme while delivering her opening monologue on Saturday Night Live, but she gave her fans everything when it came time to perform as the musical guest.
The 28-year-old Radical Optimism pop phenom hosted and belted out her hits on the May 4 episode of the popular late-night show.
For the musical portion, she highlighted her creative range. First, Dua worked her way through a dance-heavy rendition of her single “Illusion,” complete with an extended dance break in the middle.

After that, she showed off her more emotional side and pulled the vocal trigger while performing “Happy For You,” which closes out her new album.

Saturday Night Live host and musical guest Dua Lipa performed two entries from her third studio album, Radical Optimism, which came out Friday.
After leading off with the dance track “Illusion,” the British pop star returned with “Happy For You,” the album’s closing single.
Lipa, Rolling Stone‘s cover artist back in January, told us then of her latest album: “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad. You can’t change it.

Is that Tashi Donaldson or Dua Lipa?
Saturday Night Live audiences were treated to a nod at Luca Guadagnino’s latest film Challengers during a sketch featuring host Dua Lipa as a somewhat intense woman who had invited a date over to her apartment — aka SNL featured player Marcello Hernández.
Naturally, one of the first things he notices when he walks into the room is the hundreds of Sonny Angel dolls she has lining her walls.
“They’re companions for 25-year-old working women,” she explains. But, she assures, her date won’t need to compete with her 650+ dolls for her affection…just one.
Cue Bowen Yang, dressed as one of said dolls. Oh, and the Challengers soundtrack.
“I haven’t seen the movie,” Hernández admits, to which Yang replies: “Well, don’t worry, cause you’re about to live it.”

There is such a thing as getting too much press, it turns out, and Jerry Seinfeld definitely hit that point as he dropped by this week’s Saturday Night Live.

Saturday Night Live is poking a bit of fun at a common form of activism seen on red carpets.
The sketch comedy series put together a fake ad for the “teeny tiny statement pins” frequently seen on red carpets, supporting a variety of causes.
With the Met Gala approaching, SNL figured it might be the perfect time to promo these pins for “if you don’t know what to say but you want something that sounds like it could be important.”
Host Dua Lipa helped promo the pins because, with them, “I can say whatever I want and no one has to know.”
“It’s the perfect statement piece to style it with any outfit because it’s invisible. I’m even wearing one right now,” an Anna Wintour lookalike added, as the camera zoomed in on her pin that read “The Devil Wears Prada is not about me.”

Jerry Seinfeld joined “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update to make fun of his press tour for his Netflix movie, “Unfrosted,” which chronicles the origin story of the Pop-Tart.
Colin Jost introduced Seinfeld as a “man who did too much press” for his Netflix movie, which also marked Seinfeld’s directorial debut. When Seinfeld joined the show, he pretended to be unsure of where he was.
“Where am I exactly? Is this a podcast?” he asked Jost.
Jost explained to Seinfeld he’s live on “SNL” and has seen him doing promo for his Netflix movie “everywhere.” When asked how much press is too much, Seinfeld replied, “You don’t know until someone who cares about you shows you a video package and you see yourself with people with these names like Hoda, Mo Rocca, Chanel, Vlad.”

Jerry Seinfeld crashed Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment, and Colin Jost introduced him as “a man who did too much press.”
The Seinfeld star has been on a press tour promoting his Netflix movie Unfrosted, which he directed and stars in.
Seinfeld came to the Update desk, not knowing where he was, asking if it was a podcast. Jost pointed out that the actor was even on The Rich Eisen Show, something Seinfeld had forgotten he had been on.
“I like Rich Eisen, I find him accessible,” the comedian said.
Jost asked Seinfeld how someone might know if they’re doing excessive press with the actor saying, “That’s the thing. You don’t know until someone who cares about you shows you a video package and you see yourself with these people with these names… Hoda, Maraca, Chanel, Vlad…”

Saturday Night Live tackled the thorny issue of college protests this week — and thankfully, Kenan Thompson was there to find some laughs in it.
In Saturday’s cold open, Thompson played Alphonse, the father of a student at Columbia University who was a guest on a local talk show and initially came out as supportive of the pro-Palestinian protests. Dua Lipa is schooling Saturday Night Live on the bad blood between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
During a local news segment sketch, the “Dance The Night Away” singer appeared as a culture critic Wanda Weems to catch audiences up to speed on all the jabs the two rappers have taken at each other in diss tracks over the past few days.
But, as it turns out, Good Morning Greenville‘s culture reporter isn’t quite so tapped in.
“One clue on the song ‘Euphoria,’ when Kendrick describes Drake as Canadian, that’s because Drake is from Toronto,” she says, stating an obvious fact about the “Hotline Bling” rapper.
She continues, “And he calls Drake ‘Crodie,’ which is a term used by the Crips, which according to Wikipedia is an alliance of street gangs based in Southern California.”
While none of her insight is much more helpful than that, things take...

Dua Lipa dove deep into the scorching-hot rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar on “Saturday Night Live.”
On the latest episode, Lipa appeared alongside Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner and Devon Walker as morning talk show hosts who attempt to explain the diss tracks that have taken over the music world in the last few days to their viewers.
Lipa played a culture critic who has been locked away “for the past 48 hours trying to piece it all together.” She appeared in front of a white board plastered with portraits of the two rappers and yarn connecting Post-It notes with phrases like “shoe size,” “feet” and “Ovo.”
Drake and Lamar’s back-and-forth diss tracks have been dominating social media, particularly in the last 36 hours when Lamar released three songs targeting Drake. Things got personal as the two traded barbs about their families and personal lives. However, Lamar seems to have...

Saturday Night Live‘s latest cold open centered on Columbia University’s handling of the pro-Palestinian protests on campus amid the Israel–Hamas war.
During the sketch, Mikey Day, Kenan Thompson and Heidi Gardner played concerned parents of students participating in the protests.
Last week, hundreds of demonstrators were arrested after the school’s president called the New York Police Department to help restore order on campus. Police cleared the university’s Hamilton Hall after protesters occupied the administration building earlier in the day.
After being asked their thoughts on the protests, Gardner initially responded, “It’s been tough. Now, I’m all for free speech, but I don’t understand what they think they’re accomplishing and that’s really putting a strain on me and my daughter’s relationship.”
Thompson later shared his thoughts: “Nothing makes me prouder than young people using their voices to fight for what they believe in.

Saturday Night Live tackled the college campus pro-Palestinian protests by taking aim at high education’s high tuition costs and questionable payoff.
Rather than tackle the Gaza issue itself, SNL instead went with the Pov of parents, featuring a spoof of a NY1 talk show roundtable of parents concerned about their children taking part in the demonstrations.
While two of the parents earnestly expressed worry over their kids but acknowledged their right to express themselves, Kenan Thompson played a Alphonso Roberts, a parent with a daughter at Columbia University, and a father who will have none of the disruption.
His daughter, he said, “better have her butt in class. Let me find out if she is in one of those damn tents instead of the dorm room I pay for.”
He added, “I am all in favor of you all’s kids protesting. My kids know better.”

When Steven Spielberg set out to helm "1941" (a film John Wayne tried to stop him from making), he was seemingly unbeatable. Here was the man who invented the summer blockbuster with "Jaws," then followed it up with the big hit "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." He was on top of the world, and it felt like anything he put his name on was going to be a success. Then "1941" crashed and burned.
Sort of.
Here's the thing: in the grand scheme of things, "1941" was not relly a flop. However, because critics were mixed on the flick and it wasn't as big of a hit as Spielberg's previous two movies, it was seen as a failure. Spielberg the wunderkind was showing signs of fatigue. And to be fair, "1941" is definitely one of Spielberg's weaker efforts. Based very loosely on true events, the film follows several...

Steve Martin’s 2006 Saturday Night Live hosting assignment still stands out for Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. But not for the right reasons.
On Monday’s April 29 episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, the team talked about the surfer sketch they worked on for Martin.
Meyers said he thinks about it “all the time, mostly because every time I see Steve Martin, he brings it up.”
He asked his co-hosts to explain the sketch, “Surf meeting,” noting, “You guys wrote it.”
“‘Surf meeting’ was a classic format for us, which was one person sucking and not being able to take a hit over and over and over again, like way too many times,” said Samberg. In the sketch, Samberg asks Martin’s character, who’s “in an old-timey bathing suit looking super dorkish,” to leave.

Los Angeles is not the first city fans would associate with comedian John Mulaney. That would be Chicago, his hometown and the backdrop to innumerable childhood anecdotes in his stand-up act, or New York, where he broke out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and shot a special at Radio City Music Hall. But L.A. is where Mulaney now lives; it’s also currently home to the second iteration of Netflix Is a Joke, a massive, weeklong comedy festival organized by the streaming service as a show of genre dominance. (Netflix stand-up head Robbie Praw used to run programming at Montreal’s vaunted Just for Laughs event and has essentially created a West Coast version.) And so we have “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” a weeklong special event combining studio segments, pre-taped sketches and man-on-the-street interviews into a sort of pop-up talk show.
