Four years have gone by since we heard that Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios, the folks behind Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, were going to be making a reboot of the classic Christmas slasher movie Silent Night, Deadly Night (watch it Here), and while those plans didn’t work out and Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios are no longer involved, a remake is still moving forward. Last November, we learned that the film will be coming our way from Cineverse, the company behind the Terrifier franchise, with writer/director Mike P. Nelson at the helm. A couple of months ago, Sixth Dimension, the new in-house genre label at Studiocanal, picked up the global rights (excluding North America) to the project. And now, Deadline has confirmed that the remake has officially started filming – and they even unveiled the first image, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Director Christopher Landon has a proven track record for helming zippy fun horror, from the Happy Death Day films to Freaky to last year’s YA horror-lite We Have a Ghost. Landon’s latest, Drop, continues that streak while expanding his oeuvre with a more mature effort that leaves behind the teen slasher gimmicks. This first-date gone wrong thriller serves as the filmmaker’s propulsive, infectious tribute to Wes Craven’s Red Eye, resulting in a highly stylized dramatic thriller that’ll leave you fist-pumping to “Yahtzee!”

Video game adaptations are the next wave of the anime industry and Netflix’s Devil May Cry recently proved it by adapting the world of the wildly popular science fantasy action-adventure game by Capcom. The series is bringing in big numbers and fans are finally happy that the Devil May Cry video game franchise has got a deserving anime series.
The majority of the credit for the success of the new Devil May Cry series goes to its creator, Adi Shankar, who, along with Studio Mir, created a unique story that was way better than the 2007 Devil May Cry: The Animated Series. However, the only complaint that fans had with Netflix’s adaptation of the Devil May Cry video game is that the story was not actually a part of the original narrative.

When it comes to top fantasy shows and all things spooky, you’ve probably heard of Supernatural. The show featuring the Winchester brothers was a massive hit as soon as it premiered in 2005 and took the entire genre by storm. It followed the lives of Sam and Dean Winchester, as they went through their wild and emotional journey.
The hype surrounding Supernatural is so high that, despite ending in 2020 after 15 seasons, fans continue to talk about it.

Happy Death Day (watch it Here) and Happy Death Day 2U (watch that one Here) director Christopher Landon let it be known as soon as Happy Death Day 2U was released that he had plans for a Happy Death Day 3 (which would be called Happy Death Day to Us). But while Happy Death Day had earned a sequel by making over $125 million at the global box office on a budget that was just under $5 million, the third film hasn’t happened because Happy Death Day 2U only made $64 million. That’s pretty good for a movie that cost $9 million… but distributor Universal Pictures was apparently hesitant to make a follow-up to movie that made so much less than its predecessor. That’s why six years have gone by without the third film going into production – but now, Happy Death Day 3 is reportedly finally moving forward!

The Happy Death Day franchise has carved a unique niche of fans, blending horror and helpless cathartic comedy. Created by Drop director Christopher Landon, this horror-comedy keeps the audience in a time loop, reminding them of films like Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow. The film revolves around the protagonist, Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), who received critical acclaim for her role.

Everyone is a suspect in the new trailer for Drop. The upcoming mystery thriller is the latest movie from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon.
The White Lotus breakout star Meghann Fahy, who earned an Emmy nomination for her performance in the HBO series' second season, stars in the new Drop trailer. The footage reveals that Fahy's Violet is receiving anonymous drops to her phone while on her first date in years. As the drops continue, Violet is soon instructed by the mysterious sender to murder her date, Henry, played by It Ends with Us and 1923 fan favorite Brandon Sklenar. First dates can be nerve-wracking enough, but Drop will seemingly take things to a blood-chilling level with the trailer showing several violent and terrorizing sequences. The anime industry is no stranger to long production cycles, but when those delays fall on super hyped-up sequels, it really gets fans riled up. That’s precisely what’s going on with One Punch Man Season 3. After over six years of waiting, this fantastic action-comedy show is finally returning, but the hype over its first trailer has been rather hit or miss.

Each and every character of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is among the best-written in anime. Not only do they feel realistic, but their happiness and sorrow resonate deeply because of their incredible writing.

After Dandadan‘s release, it enjoyed unprecedented success that stemmed from its unique storyline and beautiful animation. Not only that, but its interesting characters and fresh, never-before-seen story angles also pulled the audience towards it.

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
When “Madhouse,” a comedy about a happily married couple besieged by out of control house guests, was released in early 1990, it met with immediate hostility from critics. How hostile were they? So hostile that “Madhouse” is currently in the select group of movies sitting uncomfortably at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, not a single positive review to its name.

It’s incredibly rare for any movie to make more money in its second weekend of release than its first, but Spyglass and Sony’s slasher Heart Eyes managed to do just that over the weekend.
Topping its opening weekend domestic haul of $8.3 million, director Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes just scared up an additional $10 million in its second weekend at the U.S. box office!
Positive word of mouth and strong reviews helped out here, but Heart Eyes‘ week two success can no doubt be largely attributed to this past Friday being Valentine’s Day. The movie made $4.9 million on V-Day alone, up from the debut Friday total of $3.7 million. Even this week’s Sunday and Monday totals were higher than the previous week’s Sunday and Monday hauls. Another holiday, President’s Day, surely helped to boost this past Monday’s performance.

In any action anime that isn't aiming for realism, creative powers are essential for making the series stand out. Unique abilities help to define characters, especially early on, and the result of two characters with vastly different fighting styles combating each other is often an unforgettable battle. For better or for worse, some anime abilities go beyond being original, and instead are simply absurd.
Anime like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Hunter x Hunter are famous for just how strange the abilities wielded by their characters can be. These two battle shonen series have incredibly flexible power systems that enable such odd powers. Weird as techniques in these and similar series can be, however, the most unbelievable ones can often be found in anime that don't even feature combat.

While not as iconic a decade as the 1990s, the 2000s were nonetheless a great era for anime. Some of the most famous and popular anime of all time like Naruto, Bleach, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann took off during this time, and with how many people grew up with those anime and others, it’s hard to deny the era’s impact and influence on the community for years to come.

Production of One-Punch Man season 3 is well under way, but many fans still have some reservations about the return of the hit superhero comedy anime. In fact, it's no exaggeration to say that there's only one thing which can overcome these reservations, and that's for the animation quality of season 3 to be through the roof.
One-Punch Man season 3 was announced in August 2022, over two years ago at this point, and very little of the series has been revealed at this stage, despite it being set to debut some time in 2025. One-Punch Man's first season was praised for its quality, with incredible animation thanks to Madhouse and a tone that perfectly captured the series' charm. However, Madhouse wasn't available to do the second season, which instead ended up being animated by J.C. Staff. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a deeply emotional tale about loss, regret, and the passage of time. There are many underlying themes that have been explored very well and satisfied the audience. Yet, despite its multitude of themes, the series missed an opportunity to explore one of its most heartbreaking possibilities.

Decades back, Hideyuki Kikuchi gave us one of the most iconic vampire mangas of all time. From its gothic inspirations to its occult references, the series is a total banger.
From visuals to animation, Madhouse Studio left no stone unturned in exemplifying its brilliance. But like most mangaka, Kikuchi had his fair share of inspirations.

Regarding his story, he cited Lord of the Rings as one of his influences in an interview. The fantasy, occult, and dark aspects are blended well in the masterpiece.
But most of all, Kikuchi’s exploration of immortality and morality outlined the stigma and the societal norms. The vampires aren’t divorced from this hierarchy either, thus partaking in the discrepancies.

Tokyo Godfathers is considered the all-time best Christmas anime watch. The creator, Satoshi Kon, has experimented with mind-bending themes before, but Tokyo Godfathers went way beyond his usual specialty. Yet, fans accepted it with open arms, mainly due to its wholesomeness.
Satoshi Kon is also the creator of Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millenium Actress, and other critically acclaimed movies. All of them have been one megahit after another, bringing home tons of praise. But it was Tokyo Godfathers that proved just how wide of a range the director and animator has.

Tokyo Godfathers is admittedly a huge departure from the type of movies Satoshi Kon had done till then. Before this wholesome movie, he directed Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress, both of which blended reality with dreamlike elements. Both are also fairly in the psychological genre.

Uzumaki is one of the finest horror masterpieces by Junji Ito as the terror of being trapped in a world of spirals comes to life. Naturally, several fans were excited about the dark horror series with the black-and-white depiction of the narrative.

Junji Ito’s work has been adapted to both film and anime television series, highlighting the mangaka’s influence in the community. Although fans finally got their anime adaptation, it inevitably led to huge disappointment. Amid controversies and criticism, fans left unsatisfied with Uzumaki should revisit a classic 1997 horror title that remains one of the scariest series ever.

It is not often that we come across a film so endearing that it’d give us food for thought. Such is the case with Tokyo Godfathers, a classic that stands undisputed in terms of its visuals and unique plot.
Compared to Satoshi Kon’s previous movies, this Christmas classic is a warm hug on a winter’s day. Mainly because of its portrayal of the festival along with realism and fantasy. Above all, it toppled cancel culture in its unique way.
Hana, Miyuki, and Gin in a still from the movie | Credit: Madhouse
It weaves lives and narratives into a sonder symphony. Be it Gin or Miyuki, Kon left no stone unturned in his portrayal of complexities. But most of all, it was his representation of transwomen that eclipses other films.
Interestingly, his take on parenthood and complex relationships is what makes the film stand out in most aspects.

Ghostface’s potential victims in Scream 7 continue to grow as Deadline reports that Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel. As we’ve come to expect from the project, character details are being kept under wraps.
The upcoming sequel will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. After playing the role in the first five Scream movies, she was expected to return for the sixth until the studio low-balled her. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,” Campbell said. “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on.” Courteney Cox is also expected to return as Gale Weathers, but she hasn’t officially signed on yet.

Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord shows an interesting take on a typical isekai series. There are plenty of anime/manga in which the protagonist is stuck in an RPG world, and their goal is to escape from it. But not in Overlord, because when the protagonist becomes the most powerful demon sorcerer, the last thing he wants to do is give it up.

Ainz’s instant decision to stay in the game world is refreshing, to say the least. Another refreshing take is that instead of creating a beautiful game avatar, the protagonist takes the form of a skeletal undead. But why did Mayuyama abandon visuals so easily?

Time Cut, Netflix’s newest foray into the YA slasher genre, arrives just in time to set a spooky tone for Halloween with a killer soundtrack to boot. This dark thriller stars Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) and Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) as siblings separated by two decades due to an eerie, time-travel twist. As Lucy (Bailey) discovers a mysterious machine on the anniversary of her sister Summer’s (Gentry) death, she seizes the chance to go back in time, hoping to save Summer from the clutches of the sinister “Sweetly Slasher.” But time travel isn’t simple—Lucy must avoid disrupting the future, all while navigating a nostalgic yet dangerous past.
What sets Time Cut apart is its ability to balance suspense and humor without taking itself too seriously. With echoes of Happy Death Day and Back to the Future, the film taps into nostalgic ’80s slasher vibes while keeping a modern,...

Animate Times -- a news outlet run by Japan's largest anime and manga retailer, Animate -- has unveiled its top five picks for the most tear-jerking anime of all time. Modern classics largely lead the charge, with the list populated by favorites from the 2010s.
The list includes the well-known shows Your Lie in April (the beloved adaptation of Naoshi Arakawa's manga) and the 2018 hit series A Place Further than the Universe. Also featured in the lineup are Violet Evergarden, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Angel Beats!, with each relatively recent anime best known for serving pensive explorations of grief and friendship. While some fans may have expected older, iconic tear-jerkers like Grave of the Fireflies, all of the list's featured titles are from recent memory -- Angel Beats! being the oldest, which premiered in 2010. While recency bias may have some fans rolling their eyes, the...

Tensions are high with Kagurabachi and the race between four major studios that want the rights to animate the masterpiece. Takeru Hokazono has truly made it when studios can’t even decide who should take this incredible dark fantasy anime. Kagurabachi, however, doesn’t need a major studio to animate it to have the best adaptation possible. It requires a studio that can match its vibe accurately and not ruin it with unnecessary changes that would make Kagurabachi lose its essence.

The case with several popular anime that major studios animate is that they are treated as cash grabs or their employees are overworked and exploited. Mappa is notorious for this with its million of projects. Toei Animation, while they do a brilliant job of animating One Piece, drag out the scenes to milk the anime. The scariest thing about The Stanley Hotel (the inspiration for The Overlook in “The Shining”) isn’t room 217 or the ghostly sightings that occasionally crop up among visitors. It’s the free-floating foundation that allowed original owner Freelan Stanley to build a hotel on a mountain. As the mountain shifts, the foundation is shored up with… wedges of wood. It’s enough to send you screaming into the nearest hedge maze.
“The Shining” legacy hangs heavy over The Stanley; room 217 is booked for the next eight years. But in many ways, the 1997 three-part miniseries (Stephen King’s exactingly faithful adaptation of his book that served as his corrective to Stanley Kubrick’s movie) has had the most lasting impact. The hotel’s original “wedding color” palette wasn’t quite the vibe King had in mind, so he designed green wallpaper and had the plaster pillars painted to look like wood,...

Yoshiro Togashi's Hunter X Hunter is known for its complex plotting and subversion of Shnen tropes, which makes it one of the most timeless stories in the genre. The 2011 Madhouse adaptation does justice to Togashi's story and artwork, leaving its audience craving more. Phantom Rouge is the first of two Hunter X Hunter films, and while it looks like Hxh, it lacks the quality of storytelling and emotional payoff characteristic of the series. Non-canonical anime films are a great entry point into established franchises, but Phantom Rouge does a horrible job of distilling Togashi's brilliance into its 97-minute runtime.
Hunter X Hunter tells the story of a world inhabited by strange beasts and monsters, where the Hunter Society regulates the strongest members of society, such as adventurers Gon and Kurapika, the series' main protagonists. My Hero Academias Dabi, revealed to be Toya Todoroki in season 6 of the series, is one of the most intricately crafted and well-written villains in anime. He is the League of Villains' frontrunner in firepower and brutality, known for his anger and spite against a hero-worshipping society (and a father) that has wronged him and so many others.
Dabi is beloved for his insanity and complexity, and part of what makes his character come alive for Western anime fans is his English voice actor. Jason Liebrecht perfectly translates the essence of Dabis character into English. And, as a voice-acting veteran with an impressive vocal range, Liebrecht has been able to do the same with numerous well-known anime characters in the span of his career.

The world of anime is growing bigger and bigger with each passing day, and countless titles in different genres are being added. However, there’s something special about the charm of the classic series that we have all grown up watching. While titles like Baki Hanma, One Piece, and Naruto have always been popular among the fans, there’s one title that has resonated quite well among the Otaku community.

Since then, the show did not have to look back. Despite being so popular in the Otaku community, it did not feature any sequel or spin-off series.

When I first mentioned Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin to my editor, I described it as having shown me an itch I could never scratch again. I added that I wasn't sure I'd want to. Rainbow is a thoroughly brutal and exhausting watch, but also one of the most beautiful I've ever encountered. Set in the hectic, uncertain atmosphere of Japan following World War II, Rainbow centers around six boys admitted to a reformatory alongside Rokurouta Sakuragi, their experienced cellmate, just barely their elder. The series is a cruelly gorgeous chronicle of their lives during and after Shnan Special Reformatory.
Art is famously impossible to define. What we call art is art. Rainbow isn't experimental, nor does it have a grand message. Rainbow is simply a story: a story about stories, all circling back to each other. Its straightforward narrative acts like a pendulum, every crushing moment providing the momentum for an inspiring one.

Anime's ninja and samurai genres are some of the medium's most plentiful areas to play around in, and they've only become more popular in recent years. Series like Jubei-Chan, Samurai Champloo, Basilisk, and even more recent fare like Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku and Ninja Kamui set high standards that prove just what's possible in an anime action story. These stories celebrate true excess in battles, characters, and violence, but Ninja Scroll is a cut above the rest -- both figuratively and literally. The anime classic's 30th anniversary is the perfect time to revisit it to see how far it's come and if its blade has dulled after three decades.
Here, Jubei Kibagami, a prolific ninja-turned-assassin, tries to forget his tragic, traitorous past and make a living as a hired mercenary. Jubei's travels put him in direct opposition with a cabal of demonic ninjas, the Eight Devils of Kimon, who plan...

Studio Madhouse might be known for animating Death Note, Frieren, One Punch Man and several other popular franchises, but in 2000, the studio produced the most iconic gothic film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It has been more than two decades since the film was released, but the recognition it received never died down.
Bloodlust is the second anime adaptation of Hideyuki Kikuchi’s light novel series and it presents a powerful visual style to its audience. Taking place 10,000 years after a nuclear war, the anime shows vampire survivors called Nobles who begin to enslave humanity. As a countermeasure, humans take the help of Vampire Hunters, and our protagonist is a vampire-human hybrid who travels the world to kill vampires as well as other monsters.

In July 2015, Season 1 of Madhouse's hit isekai anime, Overlord, premiered on Japanese television. Nearly 10 years later, Satoshi Hino, who voices main protagonist Suzuki Satoru/Ainz Ooal Gown, has shared his views on why the series continues to resonate with audiences both in and outside Japan.
Based on the titular light novel series created by author Kugane Maruyama and artist So-bin, Overlord belongs to isekai's "media transfer" sub-genre. As the name suggests, this genre typically features a main character who dies and is reborn into the world of a TV show or video game they played shortly before dying. In a recent interview with Mantan Web, Hino reflects on his experiences voicing Overlord's lead character -- an ordinary office worker who is reborn as a skeletal warrior inside an online video game known as "Yggdrasil."

Every once in a while, an anime or manga series decides to change the norms of the Shonen genre and introduce a protagonist who defies all the stereotypes. But none of them have been able to reach the level of Light Yagami from Death Note. He may be considered by many as an anti-hero, but still, he managed to make a large impact on the anime community.

The most important aspect that made him different from others was his manipulative powers. He was able to hide his identity as Kira for the longest time by manipulating other characters and events in his favor. As it was a unique concept, fans loved it a lot and hoped for more anime series and their protagonists to be developed like this.
However, Light may not be the only manipulative protagonist in the anime industry. There are...

Featured for the first time back in 2010, Highschool of the Dead took the world by surprise. Set in a zombie-infested world, the anime carved a unique niche in the industry as it received a positive response from the fans for featuring an interesting narrative, gore violence, and a strange sense of humor.

However, one key aspect of the show became the reason behind its massive success. The blatant display of ecchi moments in the series goes hand in hand with the raunchy actions done by the characters. These moments not only made the viewers look in anticipation but also left a lasting moment in viewers’ minds.
The show did not hesitate to do fan service, which would even shame Tite Kubo’s work. But there was one scene that was probably the raunchiest of all, and after so many years, the...
