Sex & Nudity

  • A man is seen nude from behind while in a bath. This shot lasts for several seconds and is not in a sexual context.

Violence & Gore

  • A man/teenager is beaten by his captor (he spends the beginning of his life locked in a dark basement) with a large wooden club. The scene is more emotionally than physically heavy-hitting given the circumstances.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Light drinking and smoking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The emotional impact of the film is very powerful.
  • The concept, that a man is found in a German town square unable to walk or talk as he has been trapped in a cellar since birth, could be disturbing to some. The entirety of the film looks chiefly at his status as a social pariah, and this could also disturb some.
  • The film has heavy-hitting emotional power.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Later in the film, the same character is beaten by the same character. The beating is, this time, seen from the point of view of the victim, so not much is visually seen. However, small splatters of blood are seen in various places following the attack.
  • A man/teen is seen stabbed. His clothes are drenched with rather unrealistic blood but the wound is not clearly seen. He dies later. Again, the scene is more emotionally powerful than visually.
  • During an autopsy (the body being dissected is never seen apart from the untouched legs), a human brain is examined and cut apart to a degree. It is not portrayed in a gruesome manner, and the scene is very quick.
