When Tommy met Charlie
ShadeGrenade30 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Having created and written several hit I.T.V. sitcoms such as 'George & The Dragon', 'For The Love Of Ada', and 'Love Thy Neighbour', Vince Powell and Harry Driver did it again with this vehicle for Jimmy Jewel, with whom they'd worked on 'Nearest & Dearest'.

Jimmy played 'Tommy Butler', a garrulous pensioner forced to move out of his house by the local council and live with daughter 'Vera' ( June Barry ) and her objectionable husband 'Brian' ( Larry Martyn ). Feeling unwelcome, he goes for a walk in the park, and meets 'Charlie Harris' ( Charlie Hawkins ), a young Cockney tearaway being raised by his single mum ( Jo Warne ). The old man becomes a father figure to the boy and soon they are to be seen fishing, walking and sharing their wildly differing views on life.

This could not be made today, given the current mass hysteria about paedophiles ( generated mainly by the tabloid press, who've been hypocritically running photos of topless young women on their on their pages for years ). One second season episode addressed this concern directly: Tommy was told by Vera that nasty gossip was circulating about him and Charlie, a stand-out moment in what was essentially a gentle comedy series. For once the normally boisterous studio audience was silent.

Four series were made in total. 'Spring & Autumn' was warm, funny, altogether charming, a product of a time when two people of differing ages need not be afraid to conceal their friendship. Paul Lewis' title theme is magnificent too.

The young and the young at heart!
Rabical-919 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Running concurrently with 'Love Thy Neighbour', Vince Powell and Harry Driver's 'Spring & Autumn' was an altogether different show starring Jimmy Jewel, of 'Nearest & Dearest' fame, as cantankerous pensioner Tommy Butler who is forced to move in with his daughter Vera and her objectionable husband Brian when his house is listed for demolition.

The show began life as a pilot. Tommy, after moving with his daughter and son in law feels like a fish out of water. Whilst out walking, he meets young tearaway Charlie Harris, who has just moved to the area and is being raised by his single mother. The two strike up a father and son like friendship and end up doing various activities together such as fishing, walking in the country, even going on holiday together.

The pilot was so successful that it led onto not just one series but four, providing Powell and Driver and indeed Thames Television with another hit.

Like 'For The Love Of Ada' before it, 'Spring & Autumn' was safe, pleasant entertainment with mostly good scripts and great acting from Jimmy Jewel. Charlie Hawkins too made for a likeable sidekick for Jewel. Also wonderful in the cast are June Barry and Larry Martyn as Vera and Brian, as well as Jo Warne ( the original Peggy Mitchell in 'Eastenders' ) as Charlie's ever worrying mother Betty.

'Spring & Autumn' is not necessarily what one would call a classic but it least makes one keep smiling throughout each episode and in these depressing times that is not something to be sneered at! The format of 'Spring & Autumn' was later used to less good comic effect when Yorkshire Television pitched Clive Dunn into 'My Old Man', however this show remains the best by far.
