Long before the MCU came into play, director Sam Raimi gave us a glimpse into one of Marvel’s most popular and celebrated superheroes with the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Two decades later, he helmed Doctor Strange in the Mutliverse of Madness and joined an elite group of filmmakers who have directed an MCU film.

MCU series ‘WandaVision’, focusing on Wanda Maximoff and her journey after a significant loss, received praise for its unique storytelling and deep exploration of characters’ emotions. It was successful enough to spawn two spinoffs: ‘Agatha’, set to premiere on Disney+ later this year, and ‘Vision Quest’, whose release date is still uncertain.
Last year, the WGA Directory mentioned ‘Vision Quest’ was expected to come out during the 2024-2025 TV season. Many fans were excited about it, but due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, several projects, including this one, faced delays and cancellations.
Fortunately, ‘Vision Quest’ wasn’t scrapped like some other shows. Recent rumors suggest it might hit screens as soon as 2026. Now, a few weeks later, there are new reports about the show’s production.

Heading into Sunday’s Golden Globe ceremony, Ricky Gervais was not confident he would win the first-ever award for Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance. “I’m nominated for another Golden Globe tonight,” he wrote early Sunday about his “Armageddon” Netflix special. “Won’t win, but it’s nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag.” Well, he did end up winning, but he wasn’t in attendance to accept his prize.
Hours after the ceremony wrapped up, Gervais posted a three-word acceptance speech on social media as only he could: “I f***ing won!” The comedian accompanied the remark with a photo of him holding a Golden Globe from when he hosted the ceremony years earlier — see below.
I fucking won! pic.twitter.com/qi7np1J6KQ
— Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) January 8, 2024
Gervais later followed that up with some more, shall we say, heartfelt words of wisdom.

Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. Some of the other top nominees on the TV side were “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” with five noms apiece, and “The Crown” with four bids. But which shows ended up being the big winners during the three-hour ceremony?
Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was the first TV category handed out this year, and it went to Ali Wong (“Beef”), who is also predicted to prevail at next week’s Emmys. She beat out Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Elizabeth Olson (“Love and Death”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”).

No, you’re not going crazy: the Golden Globes will be presenting a brand new award for Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance during the Sunday, January 7 telecast. The six inaugural nominees are some of the funniest emcees working today, but it’s Chris Rock who is predicted to make history by becoming the category’s first-ever winner, per Gold Derby odds. He’s nominated for his buzzed-about live Netflix special, “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” which drew eyeballs for the way in which he addressed the infamous Will Smith slap at the Oscars.
Rock has leading 18/5 odds to prevail on Sunday night. The other nominees, in descending order, are: “Trevor Noah: Where Was I” (Netflix) at 9/2 odds, “Ricky Gervais: Armageddon” (Netflix) at 9/2 odds, “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” (Netflix) at 11/2 odds, “Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love” (HBO) at 6/1 odds, and “Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact” (Netflix) at 15/2 odds.

British comedian and actor John Cleese has sparked controversy after comparing Donald Trump to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
In a message posted on X, the A Fish Called Wanda, Fawlty Towers and Monty Python actor wrote that there were five ways in which Hitler was preferable to Trump, who is seeking re-election to the White House.
“1. He fought for his country 2. He never used a teleprompter 3. He was nice to dogs 4. He wrote his own books 5. He never played golf 6. He wasn’t a big fat slob,” wrote Cleese.
He continued by listing five ways Trump is preferable to Hitler, writing “1. doesn’t practice genocide 2. He has nicer hair,” and leaving the other three spaces empty.
The message, which has been viewed more than one million times, prompted hundreds of below-the-line responses, with many criticizing comedian Cleese for the comparison, and others writing it was clearly meant in jest.

The prophecy may now come to pass: There’s a good chance Jeremy Allen White wins a Golden Globe Award for Season 2 of “The Bear,” a week before he wins an Emmy… for Season 1 of “The Bear.” Ditto the show’s Ayo Edibiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
And so goes the most unusual TV awards season ever, where a delayed Primetime Emmys — with its June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, eligibility window — falls smack into a Globes, Critics’ Choice and guild awards season with a January to December, 2023 time frame.
The Hollywood strikes also may have had an impact on the even more limited-than-usual showing for broadcast networks at the Globes. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” was the sole broadcast nominee, and even it saw its fortunes drop to just two nods: Best comedy and best female actor in a comedy (Quinta Brunson).

When Barbra Streisand’s “Yentl” opened on Nov. 18, 1983, directing was very much a man’s world. In the 1970s, there had been a few inroads for women. Italian director Lina Wertmuller was nominated for best director for 1976’s “Seven Beauties” Stateside, actress Barbara Loden, who was married to Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan, wrote, directed and starred in the acclaimed 1970 indie drama “Wanda,” which won best foreign film at the Venice Film Festival. She never followed up with another movie and died of breast cancer in 1980.
There was also Joan Micklin Silver (“Hester Street”), Claudia Weill (“Girlfriends”), Martha Coolidge (“Not a Pretty Picture”), Joan Tewkesbury (“Old Boyfriends”) and Joan Darling (“First Love”). But those filmmakers ran into brick walls when they tried to set up projects with the major studios. Wim Wenders and Thierry Frémaux signalled their support on Saturday for the Hollywood actors strike as the industrial action hits its 100th day.
“I understand the actors who all want to profit a little more… rather than there being just a dozen big names who have high salaries… while all the others earn nothing or very little,” Wenders told a press conference at the Lumière Film Festival.
The German director is guest of honor at the 15th edition of the festival, spearheaded by double-hatted Cannes Delegate General Frémaux in his role of director of the Institut Lumière in Lyon, preserving the legacy of cinema pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumière.
Frémaux seconded Wenders’s words.
“The universal dimension of this strike is perhaps a bit underestimated… France, which has a reputation for struggle and putting up a fight, can also look with admiration at what is happening in Hollywood for something that touches us all,...

Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.
This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. Also included in this lineup are the sketch comedy special “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love....

Five years after scoring back-to-back Emmy wins for helming the 89th and 90th Oscars, Glenn Weiss could clinch his fifth Best Variety Special Directing trophy for his work on the latest Academy Awards ceremony. Given the knowledge that Jimmy Kimmel hosted said two 2010s Oscars events as well as the one Weiss is currently nominated for, a majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictors expect history to simply repeat itself, and they are wise to think so.
Weiss’s most formidable challengers in this contest are producing Emmy winner Jay-Z and seven-time directing nominee Hamish Hamilton, who are recognized for conducting Rihanna’s halftime performance at the most recent Super Bowl. Also in the mix are the directors of the stand-up specials “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”

Although the Emmy Award for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special has not gone to a retrospective program of any kind since the category was established in 2018, several such winners were crowned over the preceding decades when all variety specials competed for the same prize. This year’s pre-recorded program lineup happens to include two televised celebrations of industry legends, one of which – “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” – is heavily favored to become the first special of its kind to achieve this exact honor.
The other commemorative special that could block the Burnett one’s path to victory is “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter.” Based on the untested nature of their format, both will have to watch out for every one of their fellow nominees, which include “Lizzo: Live in Concert” and Netflix stand-up specials starring John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, and Wanda Sykes.

BlackBerry (Matt Johnson)
In BlackBerry, the rise of a blue-chip tech company sets the stage for the dissolution of a longstanding friendship. Sound familiar? Just wait ‘til you hear the score. Directed by Matt Johnson, it tells the true story of Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, software engineers who founded the company Rim in the mid-80s and later invented a cellphone that could handle email. The film begins on the day when they meet Jim Basillie (Glenn Howerton), a Rottweiler who, alongside Lazaridis’ genius, turned Rim’s invention (only later christened BlackBerry) into the world’s most ubiquitous mobile device––at least for a time. – Rory O. That’s Elizabeth Olsen’s advice for actors thinking about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The “WandaVision” star told Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that by initially only agreeing to one Marvel project, actors can gain more “creative control” for the next one.
“That way you have more control over… If you, let’s say, ‘Oh my God, this is the most fun I’ve ever had and I love this character so much, I want to do it again,’ you now have more creative control for the next one,” Olsen said.
She then joked, “Don’t tell [David] Galluzzi that. [He’s] business affairs at Marvel.”

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. When it comes to the big bad in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," it's been all "Kang this" and "The Conqueror that." True Believers are constantly asking how the upcoming Phase Five kickoff will connect to the events of "Loki" and He Who Remains. Vision is eyeing his own TV series: Marvel is developing a WandaVision spinoff for Disney+ with Paul Bettany set to reprise his role as Vision, according to our sister site Deadline.
The series — tentatively titled Vision Quest, with a writers’ room reportedly starting up next week — will be about Vision “trying to regain his memory and humanity” after the events of WandaVision. (Viewers will remember that Vision, after his death in Avengers: Infinity War, was resurrected as part of his wife Wanda’s sitcom dream world, while the original Vision was reconstructed and reactivated by S.W.O.R.D.

Now that’s dedication in marriage: Paul Newman’s first directed feature film is a drama showcase for his spouse Joanne Woodward, one likely to garner critical attention. A small-town teacher deals with boredom, isolation, repression, and dwindling hope; the carefully measured conflicts allow good input from actors Kate Harrington, Estelle Parsons, and James Olson as the lover with the right approach at just the right time. It’s a picture of sensitive emotions: is Rachel Cameron really becoming a spinster? Does she have any choice in the matter? Middle age does tend to sneak up on a person . . .

Danny Elfman comes by his “Strange” love naturally. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is the composer’s ninth film with director Sam Raimi and fourth on a Marvel project, but more than that, a kind of controlled insanity has been a part of virtually everything he’s done, going back to Oingo Boingo days, so asking him to make a score both superheroic and super-nuts is not necessarily a tall order.
Variety spoke with him a few days after the opening, by which point it was abundantly clear that any worries he had about about the film being too Raimi-esque for the mass audience were unfounded, just like the reservations he’d held about how his twin Coachella performances would go over at that festival last month.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” has officially concluded its world premiere and the first reactions for the new entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are pouring in online, with film journalists calling the long-awaited sequel everything from a film that “fully goes horror” to “a mixed bag.” One thing almost everyone seems to agree on is that it’s nice to see Sam Raimi back in the director’s chair.
Benedict Cumberbatch reprises the title role in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is helmed by Raimi. The film picks up after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” in which Stephen Strange changed the face of reality by opening up the multiverse. Now, Strange is forced to team up with old and new allies as he ventures into the multiverse to face a new enemy. The film co-stars Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez,...

“The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” was in an odd place before its long-awaited debut on Friday. The action-heavy drama series starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as their Marvel characters Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, respectively, would have been the perfect bridge between Marvel’s popular superhero films and its new limited series on Disney+. With a similar tone and familiar global narrative, it felt like a quintessential Marvel property, one that was proof that its crowd-pleasing big-screen adventures could be adapted for the small screen without losing anything during the transition to episodic storytelling.
But once the six-episode series was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the high-concept “WandaVision” took its place, expectations for “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” shifted. Critics and fans alike wondered if the show, which was created by Malcolm Spellman, would be able to compete with the emotional, heartbreaking story at the heart...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t seen “The Series Finale,” the ninth and final episode of “WandaVision” on Disney Plus.
“WandaVision,” the first big television show of 2021, ended up being both an oddity and an inevitability. While the Disney Plus series is from the powerful production house of Marvel Studios, it also proved to be a deliciously strange, surprisingly poignant reflection on grief, family and community. Watching Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) wind her way through decades of sitcom history, layers of her own trauma, and an increasingly tragic love story with her considerate (and synthetic) counterpart Vision (Paul Bettany) became a weekly event that united viewers in a pressing need to know what on earth was going to happen next.
As the series evolved, though, it became clear that fans were watching and appreciating “WandaVision” very differently depending on their level of affection for the ever broadening Marvel Cinematic Universe.

WandaVision‘s stunning finale alters the landscape of the MCU by posing a series of questions that seemingly set-up Marvel Studios’ biggest post-Endgame plans. It’s could be years until we get definitive answers to all of those questions, but there’s little doubt that we’ll eventually look back on WandaVision as the bold experiment that laid the groundwork for whatever comes next.
Still, there’s a good chance that when people think back on WandaVision years from now, it won’t be the MCU elements of the show they remember most fondly. No, that honor will likely go to those weeks when WandaVision left us wondering “What is happening?” As we watched Wanda and Vision take refuge in their idealistic suburban nightmare, millions wondered how they got there and what it all meant. The pages of Marvel Comics include some of the most iconic romantic relationships in pop culture, but looking at the feature films that comprise the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’d be forgiven for not really knowing that fact. These twenty-some-odd movies have given us everything from space operas and magic to war dramas and spy films. Yet, in all this time, we’ve never really gotten a love story, and certainly not a film in which the central romantic relationship was the primary driving force behind its narrative. Until now.
WandaVision is not just the MCU’s first proper romance, it’s the first time this franchise has gone all-in on the idea that love can be as cosmic and all-encompassing as every other tale this universe tells and should be treated as such. The story of Wanda and Vision is both thrilling and heartbreaking by turns,...

Marvel fans are used to characters jumping from film to film, but the addition of Disney+ into the Marvel Cinematic Universe means that storylines will connect across multiple platforms. Marvel boss Kevin Feige doesn’t believe he’s asking too much from fans, who will now have to watch both weekly series on streaming in addition to the big-screen films, to get the full picture of what’s happening.
“Honestly, we tried to make the stories unfold in a way that if you are following along and have seen what has preceded it, you’ll be right up to speed. And more importantly, if you haven’t, you’ll be up to speed,” Feige said Wednesday during a session at the semiannual Television Critics Association press tour. (Warning: Some spoilers ahead for episode six on WandaVision)
With just three “WandaVision” episodes remaining, fans are scrambling to figure out just who the series’ main villain actually is — the most popular guesses ranging from Agatha Harkness to Mephisto to Nightmare to Wanda herself.
But while we’re trying to establish our foe, there’s also a mysterious friend lurking around. And a lot of people are convinced that friend is Reed Richards.
It was established back in episode 5 that “the Hex” phenomenon affecting Westview is emitting a ton of cosmic microwave background radiation, which for the record is no joke. Prolonged exposure can cause horrific medical problems or even kill living beings, which is why it wasn’t safe for Monica Rambeau to return after being kicked out of Westview by Wanda at the end of episode 3 (and 4).
But. “I know an aerospace engineer who’d be up for this challenge,...

The sixth episode of WandaVision features one of the most terrifying scenes in the show so far. In the episode's fake "commercial," what starts off as a stop-motion parody of yogurt-for-kids ads of the '90s and '00s turns into a deadly nightmare. To recap: a kid, stranded on a desert island, is given a cup of yogurt by a shark, but he can't open the lid of the yogurt and slowly starves to death as we watch. Yeah - we're creeped out too! The scene could have a couple of different meanings, depending on your overall theory of what's going on.
The key to understanding the scene is remembering that the commercials in WandaVision, as a whole, seem to be a timeline of all the traumatic events Wanda has undergone. As more episodes have come out, it's become pretty clear that the commercials are representing those events in chronological order.

While there are a lot of questions we need answering stemming from the first two episodes of WandaVision, there's one that seems to have an easy answer. The first episode ends with a cliffhanger where viewers learn that Wanda and Vision aren't living out a surreal sitcom for themselves: they're being watched. We only get to see the hand of said person, but they're watching WandaVision just as we are, on TV with credits rolling and everything.
The first question is, what does that mean for the town of WestView? We have some ideas about that, but most importantly, we have to ask, who is watching "WandaVision" in the real world and what do they want? First things first, let's examine the clues. The mysterious person seems to be a woman and, by the looks of her notepad, one who's associated with the mysterious S.W.O.R.D. Admittedly,...

Fox Entertainment streaming service Tubi announced a partnership with China’s Wanda Pictures on Monday, saying it will now stream at least two of the latter’s films in both Chinese-language and English-dubbed versions.
The headlining film in the deal is Wanda’s “Detective Chinatown 2,” which currently reigns as China’s sixth-highest grossing movie of all time thanks to $541 million in local receipts. The title grossed a mere $2 million in North America. A second title is “The King’s Avatar: For the Glory,” an anime pic set in the competitive world of esports that grossed $12 million in China the summer of 2019 and has not released theatrically in any other territories. Both films will soon be available on the Tubi platform in the U.S. and Canada. The latter animated title will also be available in Spanish in the U.S. and Mexico.

A new TV spot for Marvel’s WandaVision reveals a clip not seen in the full trailer. Our first proper look at the upcoming McU series arrived over the weekend, and fans were blown away by the promise of something totally unlike anything we’ve had in the franchise before now. Drawing from comic book storylines like House of M but adding its own warped sitcom-like twist, the show looks to be something special indeed.
As for the TV spot, it’s mostly a trimmed down version of the trailer but it does feature one new clip. At the end of the promo, Wanda enters her living room – in the black-and-white 50s period – and finds Vision, who says to her: “Welcome home.” Technically, this scene was shown in the Disney Plus ad released during the Super Bowl months ago, but we certainly haven’t seen it in this context before.

There’s a distracting practice in American cinema of casting actors who are already well into their 20s to play teens, although “Holler” contains one of the few examples in recent memory where an age difference of nearly a decade, while noticeable, works to the film’s advantage. Ruth, the resourceful Ohio high school student at the heart of writer-director Nicole Riegel’s open-wound debut, has been forced to grow up too soon. Life isn’t fair, and it shows on the face of British actor Jessica Barden (“The Lobster”), whose remarkable performance illuminates this unvarnished dive into tough, small-town survival … and escape.
A resilient spark plug in a box of rusted parts, Ruth represents a huge swath of the American public rarely seen on-screen: young people without iPhones and Instagram accounts, just struggling to get by. Her mother (Pamela Adlon) got hooked on painkillers after injuring her hand and...

During last night’s Super Bowl, a promo aired for Disney Plus’ upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, finally giving us our first official look at The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki. While it was only a brief 30-second spot, there was more than enough footage shown to have fans heading online to dissect every frame.
It may have been more of a sizzle reel for Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate rather than a full-blown trailer, but enough was revealed to give some pretty big clues about which direction each limited series is heading in, story-wise. For instance, we’d known for a while that the events of WandaVision were set to incorporate multiple realities, and tie directly into the plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but now we have the first real confirmation that not only is Wanda pregnant, but her twins will become the newest members of the McU.

Things move pretty quickly in the opening third of Avengers: Endgame. So while the film has much to tell us about the effects of Thanos’ genocidal snap from last year’s Infinity War, it only figures that the movie doesn’t find the time to confirm the fate of each and every McU regular.
That being said, in the official Endgame screenplay – which was recently released online for awards consideration – we get a short breakdown of some of the Mad Titan’s dusted victims, including a few characters whose whereabouts were left ambiguous in the final film.
The text in question reads as follows:
“A Holo-display Rotating Through Faces Of People We’Ve Lost: Wanda. Vision. Bucky. T’Challa. Maria Hill.
Rhodey
It’s been twenty-three days since Thanos came to Earth.

Nearly a decade since Ava DuVernay launched Array, what was initially a small distribution company has grown to become a multimedia empire that now sits on a sprawling Los Angeles campus. The gated property in Historic Filipinotown contains, among several things, post-production facilities and a recently completed state-of-the-art, 50-seat theater that will screen Array titles, work by local artists, and an annual film series, which was announced today, curated and funded by DuVernay’s non-profit Array Alliance. Titled Array 360, the program will bring together award-winning filmmakers and emerging artists for six weekends of cinema, community, and conversation.
Array 360 will run from September 27 – November 2 at the all-new Amanda Theater, as the new screening space will be called. The inaugural slate features a celebration of women filmmakers including Agnès Varda, Euzhan Palcy, Barbara Loden, Suzana Amaral, Kathleen Collins, Shirin Neshat, Garrett Bradley, and Mati Diop, among others; a John Singleton retrospective; a...
