Recently blinded by a horseback riding accident, Sarah (Mia Farrow) goes to live into a large manor house in the English countryside with her Uncle George Rexton (Robin Bailey), Aunt Betty (Dorothy Alison), and cousin Sandy (Diane Grayson). After spending the afternoon with her boyfriend Steve Reding (Norman Eshley), Sarah returns to an empty house, or so she thinks. After a night's sleep, she wakes up again to a quiet house and thinks everyone is still asleep. What she doesn't know is that her uncle, aunt, and cousin have all been murdered and that the killer is planning to return to retrieve a bracelet that he accidentally dropped.
See No Evil (aka Blind Terror) was written by British screenwriter Brian Clemens.
His motivation is never really explored in the movie. All we see of him until the very end of the movie is a pair of brown cowboy boots, each emblazoned with a white star. We see him coming out of a movie theater and strolling nonchalantly down the sidewalk past shops advertizing guns and violent comics. We see his boots get splashed with muddy water by the Rextons' car as George drives up to the railway station to pick up Sarah and Betty. We see the boots step boldly in front of the Rextons' car as it drives away from the station. The next day we see the booted stranger watching from a nearby pub as the Rextons carry groceries to their car, only to find that it's been keyed. The next time we see the boots, the Killer is at the Rextons' front door. Given these clues, viewers have offered four possibilities. He killed the Rextons (1) for muddying his boots, (2) out of contempt for their obvious upper class and condescending attitude toward him, (3) because they had the horse shot after Sarah's accident and blamed it on a broken leg, and/or (4) because he was simply a psychopath.
The killer returns, looking for the bracelet. Panicked, Sarah flees on horseback but gets knocked off her horse by a tree branch. Hysterical and crying for help, she wanders into a gypsy camp. At first, a family of gypsies try to help her. When she shows one of them the bracelet, however, and he reads the name "Jack" on it, he concludes that the killer must be his younger brother Jack (Barrie Houghton). Instead of taking Sarah to the police, Tom (Michael Elphick) takes her to a clay pit and locks her in a shed. Sarah eventually knocks a hole in the wall and manages to escape, only to wander through the mud and muck, screaming for help. When Sarah's horse returns riderless to Steve's stables, he goes looking for Sarah and eventually finds her in the clay pit. He takes her back to his place and calls a doctor. After she is resting comfortably, he gathers up some of his grooms along with an armload of guns to look for the gypsies, leaving one groom behind to keep his eye on Sarah. They eventually come across Tom and Jack, but Jack swears that the bracelet is not his. He admits to going up to the Rextons' house last night but only because he had a date with Sandy. His bracelet, he explains, is inscribed with the name "Jack" while the bracelet Sarah found is inscribed "Jacko". Realizing that the killer is one of his own employees named Jacko (Paul Nicholas) and that it was Jacko he left with Sarah, Steve doubles back to the house. Meanwhile, Sarah has decided to take a bath to clean off the clay and dirt. As she soaks peacefully in the tub, she realizes that there is someone in the bathroom with her, going through her dirty pants, looking for the bracelet. Jacko attempts to drown her, but Steve suddenly appears just in time to pull Sarah out of the water and knock Jacko to the floor. In the final scene, the bodies of the Rextons are shown being loaded into ambulances.
When the killer goes back to the house after realizing his bracelet fell off and tries to stop Sarah from riding the horse, he notices the bracelet in her back pocket. We see him grab at it a number of times before the horse eventually kicks him and Sarah rides off. He simply assumed it was still in her back pocket while she was bathing.
