3rd and best Hope/Diller comedy thanks largely to Miss Gina Lollobrigida

I approached Bob Hope's and Phyllis Diller's 3rd and final "epic" with some trepidation. After the mediocre "Eight on the Lam" and the dire "Boy, Did I Get A Wrong Number!", I wasn't expecting much. However, I am a huge fan of Gina Lollobrigida(billed here as "Miss Gina Lollobrigida") so I decided to give it a chance and I was pleasantly surprised. While no classic and far from great Hope, "The Private Navy of Sergeant O'Farrell" is an amiable, easy-to-take farce in the "McHale's Navy" vein and is Hope's best film from a not-so-great period(1964-1972) in his film career. Basically Hope and his men are fighting WWII in the 1960s, not the 1940s, replete with anachronisms including references to "watching reruns" in the decade before TV was commonplace in most American homes. Anachronistic highlight is the gorgeous 41-year old Miss Lollobrigida showing off her breathtaking figure in a 1968 bikini complete with 1968 makeup and hairdo in a sequence allegedly set in 1941 Waikiki. Interestingly enough, no reference is made to Italy being Japan's and Germany's ally during WWII. Jeffrey Hunter, most famous for his portrayal of Jesus Christ in "King and Kings" shows a surprising strong aptitude for comic ability as a lieutenant-cum-descendant of John Paul Jones with a propensity to seasickness. In one of the film's daffier subplots he keeps having romantic dreams about Miss Diller! The Adam and Eve sequence is a hoot. Mako shines as a Japanese-American named Calvin Coolidge Ishimura who gets mistaken for an Axis soldier. All of the likable nonsense is well directed by former Warner Brothers cartoonist turned comedy director Frank Tashlin("Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?", "The Glass Bottom Boat"). In a clever moment, Bob and Gina spoof Burt Lancaster's and Deborah Kerr's "From Here To Eternity" beach love scene 12 years prior to Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty did so in the hit spoof "Airplane!"

Bottom line: Nothing great but pleasant and worth seeing if you're a fan of Hope or Gina. Too bad they didn't make more films together.

Rating: 6 out of 10 or **1/2 out of ****.

Makes a good double feature with either of these Cary Grant WWII Pacific Theater comedies: "Operation Petticoat"(1959) or "Father Goose"(1964).

An unambitious, pleasant little comedy

I have never expected a great deal from Bob Hope's comedies and know perfectly well that his films were meant to amuse their audiences in a lighthearted, unpretentious way. Hope was always the same as an actor but even his sameness was somewhat brilliant and I tend to like him. I remember having had lots of fun seeing THE PALEFACE, Paris HOLIDAY, BACHELOR IN PARADISE and other of his films. THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O'FARRELL is just an average effort. Frank Tashlin was an excellent director but this is not one of his major comedies. The plot could have resulted in a more substantial screenplay, in better devised and more entertaining comic scenes. The film has an obvious 60's look and no effort was made to give it a more authentic 40's atmosphere. Hope and Diller are their usual selves, and occasionally make one laugh. Gina Lollobrigida is as beautiful as ever but has very little to do. As usual, she is merely seen as a decorative presence. She could be so much more, as we know from films such as COME September, HOTEL PARADISO and BUONA SERA, MRS. CAMPBELL. Mylène Demongeot does a sort of cameo. It would have been to the film's advantage to give her more screen time.

"I don't know what I've got, but I'm about to share it".

Abbott and Costello may have wreaked havoc on more branches of the military, but they never tangled with two at the same time the way Bob Hope does in "The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell". A somewhat uneven comedy, the film makes do with Hope's traditional one liners and does the best it can with a supporting cast that includes Jeffrey Hunter, Phyllis Diller, and Gina Lollabrigida. At the center of the story is Sgt. O'Farrell's (Hope) plan to bring women and beer to the island base of Camp Funapee. Once accomplished with mixed results, the story meanders off to allow Hope's character to capture a Japanese submarine single handedly, and close out the story arm in arm with the lovely Maria (Lollabrigida).

As for the beer, I was surprised to see that it wasn't Budweiser cans floating all over the Pacific, but those of then heavyweight Milwaukee competitor - Pabst Blue Ribbon. It made me wonder if the Anheuser-Busch folks might have been given a shot at the picture. By the time the film really gets rolling, there's a can of Pabst in just about every scene. Being a long time Bob Hope fan, I can't recall today if Pabst was ever a major sponsor of his programming. But I sure do remember Texaco.

Hey, did you catch the nod to one of Hope's earlier pictures? All the men are on the beach drinking when the Indian private says to Hope - "Excuse me Heap Big Paleface…" There's also that funny sequence attempting to reenact the beach scene in "From Here to Eternity"; Hope even throws Lancaster's name out there in a bit of self deprecation. Also, if you were waiting to see if Crosby would show up, there's that clip of "Pennies From Heaven" to keep the streak going.

Yet even with all the typical Bob Hope humor, he seems just a bit out of place in this late 1960's flick pretending to be one from the 1940's. This one approached the beach blanket bingo genre just a little too close for my comfort, and I prefer virtually any of his earlier efforts in glorious black and white. For my money, if I'm looking for Hope in a military setting, I'd just as soon tune in to one of his many USO entertainment specials. If memory serves, one of them would also have showcased Gina Lollabrigida and Phyllis Diller.

Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller

I own this movie and I really did not think that it would be all that great. But I was pleasantly surprised. It's GREAT and Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller work great together. I highly recommend it. I love the two of them together. I have to say that I consider Bob Hope to be in the top 10 of funniest comedians.

Not one of Hope's best!

Frank Tashlin's last movie (he died in 1972) is certainly not one of his best. In fact, it could justly be described as a somewhat disappointing effort. None the less, it is not as bad, in my opinion, as some people rate it. Of course, ratings all depend on the viewer's expectations. If you've paid out good money and your expectations are high, you would be inclined to give the film the lowest marks possible. But if you're a professional reviewer, you don't pay out any money and you have only a few expectations. You avoid reading what's published in the New York and Los Angeles press, and you prejudge the movie from what you have seen of the artists' previous work. On this basis, this "Private Navy..." is a good Bob Hope comedy. Not superlative, not wonderful. not a scream... but not the pits either! Admittedly, it has a lot going wrong for it. Although writer Tashlin's gags are fair enough, director Tashlin's sloppy approach with his pointless use of close- ups is to be deplored. And his direction of the players is also none too hot. Admittedly, Lolo comes across well. She's had to deal with more than a few bum directors in her time and she knows how to handle them. Mylene, on the other hand, should have threatened court action if her woefully directed footage was not removed. On yet another hand, there are some good cracks at the expense of Bing Crosby, who appears in an extract of his rendition of the title song of "Pennies from Heaven".

Capturing a ship of Hope

By the time Bob Hope got to making The Private Navy of Sgt O'Farrell the comedy well was running a bit dry. Thiw was material that he could have done 20 years before, during the post World War II period.

Somebody must have gotten an idea for this film noticing that in McHale's Navy, Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway and the gang had their own personal Japanese prisoner. So a whole film was built around a leftover Japanese soldier on the backwater island that Hope is stationed on. Hope has his own Ensign Parker in Jeffrey Hunter and his own Captain Binghamton in John Myhers.

We've got both Army and Navy personnel here though the Navy seems to be in charge. John Myhers is no Joe Flynn with that officious monotone as Captain Binghamton. And no one would ever say that Jeffrey Hunter had Tim Conway's gift for comedy.

And Hope looks every bit of the 65 years he had under his belt when this film was made. He ought to have been stateside collecting those first Social Security checks issued.

Mako does well as Calvin Coolidge Ishimura an American Japanese who had the misfortune to be visiting relatives in the old country at the time of Pearl Harbor. And Phyllis Diller as the man starved nurse Krauss earns a few laughs.

The film is about Hope's pursuit of a sunken supply ship that was loaded with beer. From what I remember of the army it probably would have been near beer which was all an enlisted man could get on Fort Polk, so I didn't see what the fuss was about. Frank Tashlin the director clearly ripped this one off from the classic British comedy Whiskey Galore.

Joke kind of fell flat as the beer probably was.

Bob Hope Wages War for Beer

Really funny plot drives this silly film regarding the boredom faced by soldiers in the Pacific during WWII. After the Japanese torpedo Hope's beer supply, he takes matters into his own hands to improve morale.

His effort to bring women on the island, only gets him male nurses and Phylis Diller. Although the plot drags a bit, and Hope's pranks seem dated, this is still a good flick with lots of harmless laughs. However, if you are politically correct, you will probably be offended.

My instincts were right about this one...it just isn't funny.

Most of Bob Hopes best films were made in the 1930s and 40s. Many of his later movies, to put it charitably, looked like he was just going through the motions...at best. Because of this, I had pretty low expectations of this film when I sat down to watch it...especially since he is 65 and is playing a sergeant! Were my instincts right? Read on...

Sgt. O'Farrell is stationed on a small, out of the way island in the Pacific during WWII. While they don't see any action, they don't see much of anything else, as their supplies have been cut off and they are desperate for some female companionship. Suddenly, a transport plane makes it through and their wish is granted...of sorts. The 'woman' is Nurse Krause...and she's played by Phyllis Diller! As for the rest of the nurses...they're all guys! Inexplicably, Gina Lollobrigida just happens to be there. And, soon beer cans from a sunken supply ship start washing ashore...and suddenly morale improves tremendously. But the Sergeant needs to keep a secret....his partner who is helping him retrieve all the beer is a Japanese soldier (Mako) who has little interest in the war.

So does all this sound very funny? No. And that's the problem. You would expect a Bob Hope film to be a comedy but barely anything even comes close to making you laugh and the biggest jokes(???) are about how ugly Diller is...and that really isn't particularly funny. As a comedy, it stinks...and as a war picture, it's not much either due to the strange plot, overuse of bad stock footage and an almost complete lack of anything exciting. A dud...but amazingly NOT among Hope's very worst films of the era, as he managed to be even more unfunny in films such as "How to Commit Marriage" (1969)....a film about as funny as Ebola.

Not Hope's Best

I'm a big fan of Bob Hope's movies. Some of his earliest works are superior to even his Road films with old what's his name. By the time this movie came around, you could tell he was running out of material. With a nod from the series, McHale's Navy, he plays a sergeant who just about runs his own military base, but when a state of prohibition hits the island, he takes it upon himself to get beer to his buddies with the help of a Japanese deserter hiding out on the island. Now that the men have beer, they start looking for another male vice: women. With another nod to Paint Your Wagon, they lure several female nurses to an island along with Phyllis Diller who pursues Hope like a love-sick school girl. It's an underestimated comedy as he tries to stay ahead of his superior and love-starved Diller. The movie drags a bit in some places, but I'm sure only die-hard fans of Bob Hope will enjoy it.

A Bomb with a Head on It!

Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Gina Lollabrigida, and Jeffrey Hunter star in this very lightweight comedy about Army life. There's really not much to say, except it's not that great. It has a few laughs and may keep your mind off real-life problems, but the material is just embarrassing for the actors involved, especially Jeffrey Hunter who dreams! of Phyllis Diller. They really milk for every drop the ugliness of Phyllis Diller, but, if she cleaned herself up, she wouldn't look as bad as she's reputed to be. If you're looking for a Bob Hope movie, you couldn't do much worse than this film; but I haven't seen Cancel My Reservation. Don't say you haven't been warned. With them talking about beer all the time, this is one war with a head on it!

Not quite so mindless fun with a message

Many people cannot stand Bob Hope and his mannerisms, and, to be honest, I am one of them. Most of his films are little more than an extended stand-up routine of his with mostly rather predictable jokes.

But sometimes he pulled off a better film, like his Paleface movies, and this one here is even better - it must surely be the best film of his career, although most critics failed to notice it. Apart from having better jokes and a better cast than the usual Hope effort, this film even comes with a message. It is anti-racism and anti-war but it does not wear this attitude on its sleeves, it merely subverts it under the cover of slapstick comedy into the mind of the viewer. I'll be hard pushed to name another anti-war movie which brings across its message so effectively, and this is an amazing thing to say about a Bob Hope flick, given the stiff and famous competition in this field.

Ratty little comedy belongs in the brig!

Arguably Bob Hope's worst comedy (and that includes some heavy competition). Stuck on an island with sailors, Hope's Sgt. O'Farrell dreams aloud of being in a bathtub with a geisha girl "steering his ship." Somebody certainly steered this Hope-hackery over the cliff, as it features Phyllis Diller and Gina Lollobrigida and still can't work up any laughs or excitement. Frank Tashlin is to blame for the lax direction (he also had a hand in the screenplay, though I have no idea why he wanted the credit). Alan Stensvold's cinematography is an eyesore, and Hope has never seemed so square and bland. Where's Bing Crosby when you need him? NO STARS from ****

Like "South Pacific" on LSD, but minus the songs (except "Welcome Pretty Ladies"!)

They billed "The Loved One" as the film with something to offend everyone, but this one probably wouldn't fall too far behind to those of a politically correct mind set! Hope plays a US Army sergeant during WWII stationed on a Pacific island which is shared with the US Navy. When a supply ship carrying beer (!) to the island is blown up, he worries about the morale of the men and decides to ship in some pretty nurses. Unfortunately, he gets more than he bargained for in zany, fright-wigged Diller and decides to go back to hunting down the lost beer! He teams up with Navy lieutenant Hunter and a band of other misfit soldiers in trying to reclaim the many, many beer cans which are floating in the ocean and, in some cases, at the bottom of it. Meanwhile, Hope rekindles a love affair with curvy Lollobrigida and, in his spare time, manages to fight the war, almost inadvertently! Of course, it's a comedy, so not all the story points can be taken seriously, but it's really off-center. Set in the 40's, but with all the hair, makeup, clothes and attitudes of the 60's, it's mind-bendingly inaccurate throughout. Also, Hope's treatment of an American Indian soldier in the film is really pushing the limits of good taste. It's very bizarre that a film lampooning the military and featuring such lazy, beer-guzzling, inane soldiers as these could be released right in the middle of the savage and unsettling Vietnam War, but here it is. Still, despite these and other examples of thoughtlessness and idiocy, the film does have more than a few highly comic moments. Hope manages to toss off a few amusing zingers (along with the requisite insults to his old pal Bing Crosby!) Diller is pretty crazy and has a memorable entrance as Hope awaits the "lovely" nurses on an air strip. Hunter shows off a surprisingly energetic and adept comedic touch and is exceedingly handsome with his dark tan and crystal blue eyes. Mako turns up as a Japanese-American and does a nice job as well. Wilcoxon, as a commanding officer, is a long way from C.B. de Mille, but appears to be having a good time, in any case. Many familiar TV faces dot the cast of soldiers including "Bewiched"'s Sergent, "Mork & Mindy"'s Donner and "M*A*S*H"'s Christopher (virtually unrecognizable without his glasses and brogue.) Lollobrigida is unbelievably sexy in a sensational bikini and tries hard to bring a little verve to the film. To describe Demongeot's "role" as window dressing is an understatement. She hardly appears at all and says almost nothing. There's a surprising amount of beefcake on display, despite all the chatter about sexy nurses. Hunter appears in a large fig leaf in one amusing dream sequence and, curiously, Wellman performs virtually the entire film with no shirt on. Even Hope has a scene with his shirt nearly off! The humor runs hot and cold (and most of the story is preposterous, including Hope's big "catch" at the end), but as light entertainment it's not too bad (and it has the benefit of being shot mostly outdoors on some pretty beaches.) It's not for anyone who gets offended by stereotyping, though.

Very funny.

"The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell" is a solid 1960's comedy. This may be my favorite Bob Hope movie. It's a very funny movie. The jokes are great. The story is a great comedy plot. The supporting cast is very strong. All around "The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell" is a great way to spend 90 minutes. It's a lot of fun. Honorable Mention: a very dreamy Gina Lollobrigida.

Sinking Ship

This film seems (if you'll pardon the expression) inspired by "McHale's Navy" and "Hallalujah Trail". Hope, way too old for the part, tries to come across as a a McHale/Sgt. Bilko type but doesn't pull it off. He still manages to come across slightly better than former Enterprise Captain Jeffrey Hunter who just mugs his way through scene after scene. One wonders if he hurt his eyes popping them as much as he did.

This was the last film by director Frank Tashlin, who had last directed Hope in "Son of Paleface". It's a sad reunion. There are occasional Tashlin type jokes (like Hope rowing in a submarine) but the story is a mess. Scenes seem to be missing (after setting up Phyllis Diller with the idea Lt. Commander Snavley has a crush on her, she waits for him. The next time we see them they are driving through the jungle in a jeep without explanation) and the narrative (if you're paying attention) is very choppy.

You get the feeling Tashlin was wishing he was back with Jerry Lewis, who he'd directed in 8 films since last directing Hope.

Whether you like Diller's shtick or not, she's one of the only strong performers in the film (you do wish Hope or someone would have explored the way they treat her though. Her character is actually fun and has a good heart yet they treat her like she was nothing). Gina Lollabridgida must have wondered how her career had gotten to this point and the French girl (a really underwritten part) with her I think went back to France to make movies after her experience with "The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell".
