An Italian criminal mastermind, impersonating a film director, plans to grab the loot on a beach where a bogus movie is being filmed.

Peter Sellers plays Aldo Vanucci (aka the Fox), one of the greatest criminals of the world and master of disguise. After Aldo escapes from the Italian prison he was held in, he meets again with his friends and plans to retrieve the "gold of Cairo", a large shipment of gold that waits to be unloaded somewhere in Italy. Aldo devises the perfect plan- posing as a famous director, he finds the ideal coastal village to unload the shipment, and persuades the entire population that he has chosen their village as the set for his new movie. Everybody, including the idiot chief of the local police is so excited, that they can't even imagine that in fact they are helping the Fox to get the "gold of Cairo"...—Chris Makrozahopoulos <makzax@hotmail.com>

One of the greatest heists ever has just been committed, known as the Great Gold Robbery of Cairo. Interpol knows whoever the robbers, unknown to them led by a man named Okra, have the three hundred gold bars weighing two tons on a ship destined for Europe, the issue for the robbers in how to smuggle them through whatever port they have chosen. Interpol knows that only a handful of criminal masterminds would be able to handle the smuggling job, the most-likely candidate being Italy-based Aldo Vanucci despite he being in prison and thus in semi-retirement. Despite Vanucci knowing that he could break out of prison at any time, he has no desire to do so, that is until he learns that his sixteen year old younger sister, Gina Vanucci, has purportedly grown into a loose young woman, he wanting to break out more to ensure she conducts herself in a proper manner. After breaking out, he decides to take the job in coming up with a plan stemming from Gina, who has taken the stage name Gina Romantica, trying to break into the movies, and the arrival into Italy of former American movie star Tony Powell, who does not want to admit to the world that he is far past his prime: to go undercover as movie director Federico Fabrizi in making a movie starring Gina and an oblivious Powell centered around the actual smuggling of the gold bars through the small seaside town of Sevalio. He will use the unwitting townsfolk, including the mayor and police chief, as extras, in they all just wanting to be in the movies, while in reality they will be assisting in the actual smuggling. While the Italian police are after Aldo solely for the escape, he may have other problems in carrying out the plan successfully like actually having to make a movie.—Huggo

The Fox is a criminal mastermind vacationing in one of Italy's finest prisons sending care packages home with each visitor. When he finds that his little sister has begun to discover boys and that his dim witted men don't think they can handle her, he vows to escape. After he eludes the manhunt, he accepts a job to smuggle gold into the country for which he assembles an entire movie company, including an aging star (Victor Mature) for cover as he manages to stay several steps ahead of the authorities. Released in the US as "After The Fox", Caccia Alla Volpe is a 1966 collaboration of Vittorio De Sica and Peter Sellers. In this light romp Sellers plays Italian Master Thief Aldo Vanucci who escapes from prison to help his mother control his precocious young sister and to take part in smuggling gold bullion into Italy. With the Carabiniere always on his tail, Vanucci concocts a scheme to pose as Fellini-esque movie director Federico Fabrizzi filming a neo realistic film in a small Italian coastal town where he plans to receive the gold. Many icons are sent up in this film. De Sica himself shows he is not above a little self parody, Fellini of course gets jabbed and probably most notably, Victor Mature briefly came out of retirement to play handsome Tony Powell, a hilarious and thinly veiled caricature of himself, an aging over the hill star of the 40's desperate to recapture his former starpower complete with his signature trench coat.

Britt Ekland, Sellers then wife, stars as his naive and starstruck little sister Gina Vanucci who renames herself Gina Romantica and is a willing dupe in her brother's scheme. Martin Balsam stars as Harry, Powells exasperated agent and Akim Tamiroff gets in on the self parody playing yet another greasy fez wearing villain.

Fabrizzi snows everyone in the Italian town of Sevalio who are desperate to be in a movie including a gullible chief of police who unwittingly helps him dazzled by promises of a film career for himself.

Needless to say, the plan unravels with a few amusing surprises along the way. Certainly a must see for Sellers, Ekland and Mature fans. The film is complemented by music by Burt Bacharach and Hal David including a performance of the title theme "After The Fox" by then popular British group, The Hollies.
