George Takei's Star Trek Legacy Was Almost Ruined By A John Wayne Movie
Image
Prior to landing the gig playing helmsman Hikaru Sulu on "Star Trek," actor George Takei landed a few dubbing jobs that led to him providing the English-language voices for Japanese films like "Rodan" and "Godzilla Raids Again." His first credited on-scree film role was for the 1958 adventure flick "Ice Palace" with Richard Burton. Throughout the early 1960s, he continued to play small roles in large Hollywood film productions, although his career began to thrive on television, with Takei landing guest spots on some of the hottest shows of the day. Indeed, he wound up being on episodes of "Perry Mason," "The Twilight Zone," "My Three Sons," "Death Valley Days," and "I Spy."

"Star Trek" was a three-year supporting gig for Takei, and it initially wasn't a hugely successful show, ending in 1969. After that, Takei merely turned back to other one-shot appearances on shows like "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" and "Ironside.

Image
Jean Marsh, best known for both starring and co-creating the British drama series Upstairs, Downstairs, died at the age of 90 on Sunday, April 13. Marsh was born on July 1, 1934, in the Stoke Newington district in London, England. She studied acting and mime as a child, with her first involvement in the entertainment business coming as a cabaret singer, model, and dancer. Her first time on a Broadway stage was in a production of Much Ado About Nothing in the 1950s, with British actor, director, and producer John Gielgud. Her first onscreen role came in the 1952 BBC TV movie The Infinite Shoeblack. Her other early roles included episodes of The Twilight Zone (as a female robot), Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, and I Spy.

Jean Marsh, ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ Actress and Co-Creator, Dies at 90
Image
Jean Marsh, the sleek British actress who co-created Upstairs, Downstairs and won an Emmy for her performance as the prim and proper parlormaid Rose Buck on the acclaimed ITV drama, has died. She was 90.

Marsh died Sunday at her home in London from complications of dementia, filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg told The New York Times.

Doctor Who historians know Marsh for her portrayal of Sara Kingdom, who ably assists William Hartnell’s Doctor in his fight against the mutant Daleks, on the third season of the BBC sci-fi series in 1965-66.

A year earlier, she had played King Edward’s French princess sister, Joanna, on the show’s “The Crusade” serial, then returned as the ruthless enchantress Morgaine for 1989’s “Battlefield” storyline.

On American TV shows, the London native starred as an android brought to an asteroid to keep a prisoner (Jack Warden) company on 1959’s “The Lonely,” the seventh episode of CBS’ The Twilight Zone,...

Gene Hackman Almost Played the Dad on ‘The Brady Bunch’
Image
As fans celebrated the film mastery of the late Gene Hackman over the past week, some pondered the sliding-door moment that could have changed his acting career forever. After all, if sitcom producer Sherwood Schwartz had his way, the unknown Broadway actor would have been cast as Mike Brady, patriarch of The Brady Bunch.

Hackman was Schwartz’s first choice for the role, but ABC executives rejected the idea. Who had heard of Gene Hackman? They wanted someone with more experience like Robert Reed, who TV viewers knew well from several seasons starring in ‘60s legal drama The Defenders. Hackman, on the other hand, only had one-shot appearances on shows like I Spy, The FBI and Route 66. Ironically, he also guested twice on The Defenders.

Lucky for everyone, Hackman didn’t get the part, clearing the way for an Academy Award just a couple of years later for The French Connection.

This devilish "comedy" may be the darkest movie in Disney history
Image
As Halloween approaches, there's one Disney movie that, both as a film itself and its star, may well rank as the darkest film the company has ever produced!

Disney has always dabbled in dark stuff ever since the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. For a "family-friendly" company, they've dipped their toes into horror-themed storylines a lot. That was especially true in that late 1970s/early-80s period, when the company was trying to win over new fans and break out of that image.

That included darker fare like The Watcher in the Woods, The Black Hole, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Yet one movie has to stand out as a film you cannot believe was ever made by Disney for its dark tones. As time has gone on, it's only become darker for shades the company couldn't possibly predict.

The Devil and Max Devlin.

Let’s All Meet Up in the Year 2024: Why Pulp’s Reunion Tour Is Pure Brit-Pop Magic
Image
“A concert is no good unless there’s some magic,” Jarvis Cocker told the crowd, soon after Pulp hit the stage in Brooklyn. “You react to us, we react to you — that summons the magic.” The Britpop gods reached New York last weekend, for two glorious nights, on their long-awaited North American reunion tour. Nearly everyone in the room had spent years praying for these shows, so both nights were full of that magic. “You are about to see the 555th concert by Pulp,” a message flashed on the video screen on Friday.

Eddie Murphy Reacts to Criticism of The Adventures of Pluto Nash
Image
Eddie Murphy faced harsh criticism for 2002's The Adventures of Pluto Nash, even from his son. The film's failure led to Murphy's hiatus and almost made him quit acting. Murphy is set to return as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix in 2024.

Eddie Murphy is gearing up to return as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F which hits Netflix on July 3, 2024, but before that, the actor is taking time to speak about the harshest bit of criticism he ever received thanks to his 2002 flop, The Adventures of Pluto Nash. Released on August 16, 2002, the film tells the tale of the owner of a nightclub on the moon in the year 2087 who refuses to sell his establishment to the mob. Murphy plays dual roles in the film, portraying the titular character, as well as criminal entrepreneur Rex Murphy, who is a clone of Pluto Nash.

Eddie Murphy Recalls Harshest Review Of Infamous 2002 Flop: That Was Challenging
Image
Eddie Murphy's 2002 film The Adventures of Pluto Nash received harsh criticism and a 5% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie's failure was evident in its $7 million worldwide gross and its reputation as one of the biggest box office bombs. Despite having a star-studded cast and a $100 million budget, the film was panned for its corny and misguided storyline.

Eddie Murphy recalls the harshest review he received of his 2002 flop The Adventures of Pluto Nash. Murphy took a break from family films to team with City Slickers director Ron Underwood for Pluto Nash, a $100 million sci-fi/comedy, co-starring Rosario Dawson, Randy Quaid and John Cleese. Despite the movies heavyweight talent and enormous budget, critics abhorred the effort, as reflected in the films 5% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences stayed away in droves, resulting in a $7 million worldwide gross, and a reputation as one of the biggest-ever box office bombs.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Review
Image
When 2005's Mr. & Mrs. Smith hit the big screen, it was not just a heroic dose of movie star power but a pop-cultural convergence point: the film's two stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, both at the height of their seat-filling powers, began a real-world relationship The on-screen chemistry was palpable enough that its continuance off-screen came as a surprise to no one, and all readily accepted the portmanteau Brangelina. The film and the mild controversy surrounding how the couple came to be became tabloid fodder for long enough to have left a mark in the mid-00s pop stratosphere. Though, you had to be there.

Flash forward to 2024, and Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith couldn't be less like its cinematic forebear. Starring Atlanta's Donald Glover (who co-created the series) and Maya Erskine (PEN15), two leads known for their niche character studies, the latest series is lighter on...

Fantasy Island Made Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan A Problem For Ricardo Montalbán
Image
Dashing, magnetic superstar Ricardo Montalbán got his start in the 1940s, appearing in numerous notable hit films in his native Mexico, playing a variety of roles in romantic dramas, historical comedies, and other swashbuckling adventures. His natural dazzle and ineffable "it" qualities caught the eye of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1947, and he shot the English-language film "Fiesta" with Esther Williams, Cyd Charisse, and Mary Astor. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Montalbán became incredibly busy, starring in romances, dramas, and an enormous amount of American TV, including one-shot TV movies and multiple notable hit shows. He was in "Dr. Kildare," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Gunsmoke," "Hawaii Five-o," and, of course, "Star Trek," playing the charismatic tyrant Khan Noonien Singh.

A new generation of Montalbán fans was born with the debut of "Fantasy Island" in 1978. On "Fantasy Island," Montalbán played the mysterious Mr. Roarke, the manager of Devil's Island, a remote, hard-to-get-to tropical paradise...

Modern Family: The Best Phil Dunphy Quotes
Image
Phil Dunphy's quotes combine hilarity and sweetness, making him one of the most beloved TV dads. Ty Burrell's performance as Phil won him multiple Emmy Awards and stole the spotlight from the rest of the cast. Phil's quotes reveal his unique approach to parenting and his endearing obliviousness that creates some of his best moments.

The best Phil Dunphy quotes from Modern Family combine the character's most hilarious moments as the family's self-appointed jester, and the poignant scenes revealing Phil's unique approach to parenting. Very few TV dads can compare to the brilliant combination of hilarity and sweetness that is Phil Dunphy. Much of this has to do with how Phil himself was written with actor Ty Burrell in mind, ensuring their synergy. "We wrote Phil for Ty because there’s something about the fact that this guy is unrelentingly nice, never stops trying, and is a big kid,...

Emmys: Costars competing for Best Drama Actor

From Mission: Impossible To 24, This Spy Cliche Is Overused
Image
The spy genre has a series of tropes and cliches that enrich their stories and keep things interesting, sometimes deploying subversions of the classic formula. However, like with any genre of film, these tropes intended for a twist can become repetitive and predictable - especially when used too often within the same franchise.

Spy movies have carved out their own unique genre, through franchises like James Bond, Mission: Impossible, 24 and many more. The genre is centuries old, but reached its peak at the height of the Cold War, through shows and movies like The Man From Uncle, Get Smart, 007 and I Spy. These stories would follow a predictable formula - the heroes would prepare for a mission, get a series of gadgets and a nice car and go about their operation to bring down the bad guy. Understandably, spy projects that moved into the 21st century started to buck many of these tropes,...

Pulp Debut Unreleased Song “Hymn of the North” at Hometown Show: Watch

Pulp stopped in their hometown of Sheffield for a pair of shows on their reunion tour over the weekend. To make the second night even more special, they closed out the set by debuting an unreleased song called “Hymn of the North.”

“I can promise you that no one has ever heard this song except for us on this stage,” vocalist Jarvis Cocker said to the crowd while introducing the performance. “Actually that is a lie. It’s a song — a kind of version of it was featured in a play by a guy called Simon Stephens. And it’s called ‘Hymn of the North.’ So we are in the North, so we thought you should hear it first, Ok.”

Cocker continued by sharing that the band had “some lively discussions” about whether they should play the song live. “There’s a lot that could go wrong with it — I’m playing the piano,...

How ‘Succession’ can enter the Emmy record books with a win for Kieran Culkin
Image
When Kieran Culkin confirmed in late April that he will submit in Best Drama Actor at the Emmys for the fourth and final season of “Succession” after two supporting bids, it set off a flurry of reactions. One was that it’s the correct call, given the increased focus on Roman (Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) this season in the wake of Logan’s (Brian Cox) death in the third episode. Another was that he would split the vote with Strong, the 2020 champ, and Cox, who later confirmed he was staying in lead, paving the way for someone else to triumph. But if either Culkin or Cox pulls out the win, though the latter seems less likely, “Succession” will join rarefied air as one of just two series to win the category for two different people.

Eleven dramas have nabbed multiple wins in the Best Drama Actor category,...

Beautifully illustrated by Maii (@/smaii_i), the fan art shows a soft and tender moment between Loid and Yor. Seated on her husband's lap, Yor has her expression hidden from other people's eyes but her red-tinted ears give her away. Loid has one hand on Yor's back, supporting her but due to the style and cut of her shirt where it opens up at the back, his fingers touch her bare skin. A slight blush dusts Loid's cheek as he gazes at Yor with affection.

12 Best Pound-For-Pound Boxers In Sports Movies, Ranked
Image
Movie boxers are a dime a dozen, but a few do stand out as some of the best, so here are the 12 best pound-for-pound boxers in sports movies. Boxing has long been one of the most popular sports to feature in movies due to it being more personal, with it focusing on two individuals facing off in the ring. Because of this, boxing has been a staple of sports movies from the beginning of film up to the modern day. All kinds of movie boxers exist in the pop culture ethos, but these 12 are the best.

Boxing movies span all kinds of genres, with popular dramas, comedies, and action movies centering on the sport. Many boxing movies are biopics, with films like Ali, Raging Bull, The Fighter, and 2023's Big George Foreman being some of the best examples. When Every Series Is a Blend of Comedy and Drama, What’s an Awards Show to Do?
Image
What’s so funny?

And by that, I mean, what’s so funny about “The Flight Attendant,” “Barry,” “The Kominsky Method,” “Cobra Kai,” “Dead to Me” and other shows that were nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series Emmys even though much of their content was seriously serious?

What was so funny about “Orange Is the New Black” in 2014, when it was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, but not in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020, when it was nominated in the drama categories even though the tone of the show hadn’t changed?

Blame it on the Emmys slipping and sliding over the treacherous surface of today’s television, where the difference between comedy and drama is becoming increasingly hard to discern. Hell, the first season of “The White Lotus” won a Directors Guild Award as a comedy series, while its second season is now competing at the Emmys as a drama series. Meanwhile, “Succession” might...

Almost a decade after Victoria Valentino first accused Bill Cosby of drugging and raping her, the former Playboy model is finally taking the man once known as America’s Dad to court.

“This case is about a prominent actor and comedian who used his notoriety and status to sexually assault an up-and-coming young female artist,” says the civil lawsuit for sexual assault and sexual battery filed today in LA Superior Court over the alleged 1969 attack (read it here).

Plaintiff has suffered severe emotional, physical, and psychological distress because of the sexual assault,” the jury trial seeking action adds. “Plaintiff brings this action to hold Defendant Cosby accountable for the harm he has caused her.”

Pulp Reunite for First Show in 11 Years: Videos + Setlist
Image
Pulp kicked off their long-awaited 2023 “This is What We Do For an Encore Tour” at the Bridlington Spa in Bridlington, England on May 26th. The newly-reunited Britpop icons played a set full of fan favorites and deep cuts, marking their first show in a decade: “We are Pulp — I’ve not said that for quite a long time,” vocalist Jarvis Cocker greeted the packed crowd.

Cocker and company tore through the majority of their 1995 masterpiece Different Class, opening with “I Spy” and saving their smash “Common People” until their first of two encores. The set also included some highlights from 1994’s His N Hers like “Do You Remember the First Time?” and “Babies”; deeper cuts like “Weeds” and “Glory Days”; and their 2013 single “After You.”

“An encore happens when the crowd makes enough noise to bring the band back to the stage,” the band said in a statement announcing the reunion last October.

Eddie Murphy Currently In Talks To Lead New Pink Panther Movie
Image
Eddie Murphy is reportedly in talks to star in a remake of the classic comedy The Pink Panther. Starring the legendary Peter Sellers as bumbling Inspector Clouseau, 1963’s The Pink Panther was a smash hit heist comedy that spawned a long-running Sellers-led series, culminating with 1983’s Curse of the Pink Panther. Following Sellers’ death, the Pink Panther franchise made a return in 1993 with Son of the Pink Panther, starring Roberto Benigni as Clouseau’s progeny. A proper reboot was later attempted with 2006’s Shawn Levy-directed The Pink Panther, starring Steve Martin, who reprised the role of Clouseau in 2009’s The Pink Panther 2.

Now over a decade after Martin’s second and apparently final outing in the Pink Panther series, MGM is developing a new reboot, with Shrek star Murphy reportedly in talks to play Clouseau (via THR). Sonic the Hedgehog’s Jeff Fowler was previously reported to be directing,...

Peter Greenaway
Review: Peter Greenaway’s Drowning by Numbers Swims Onto Severin 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Peter Greenaway
From its opening moments, of a girl jumping rope while counting and naming the stars in the nighttime sky, Peter Greenaway’s Drowning by Numbers is perhaps the most direct illustration of the filmmaker’s key thematic and aesthetic interest in ascribing structure to a chaotic universe. Throughout, the film slowly counts from one to 100 via a combination of character dialogue and visual markers sprinkled in frames like an elaborate game of I Spy. In deadpan voiceovers, a young boy also elaborates the byzantine rules of made-up games whose goals seem altogether too banal to be worth their complexity.

The plot that strings together these playful games involves three women, each named Cissie Colpitts, who drown their husbands and enlist the help of a coroner, Madgett (Bernard Hill), to cover up the crimes. In a relatively light preamble to the darker feminist revenge drama of Greenaway’s subsequent The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover...

Black Panther's Costume Designer Just Made Oscars History, But She's Been Doing Phenomenal Work For Years
Image
On March 12, 2023, Ruth E. Carter won her second Academy Award for her work on the costumes of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." It was Carter's second Oscar win after 2018's "Black Panther," making her the first costumer in history to win Academy Awards for a movie and its sequel. Her wins are both well-deserved. Extrapolating from the fictional country originally found in the pages of Marvel Comics, "Wakanda Forever" constructed the clothes and uniforms worn by the citizens of a high-tech central African nation that, thanks to their access to a rare miracle metal and an equally rare super-powered flower, allowed them to advance centuries beyond the rest of the world. Carter designed the clothes for Wakandan royalty, the royal guard, and the country's civilians. She also had to evoke Wakandan funerary rights, as the film opens with the funeral of the original Black Panther. Carter has said that Wakandan dress...

Rage Against The Machine's Song For The 1998 Godzilla Soundtrack Actually Criticized Blockbuster Movies
Image
In today's age of streaming services and TikTok trends, there really isn't a place for the movie tie-in soundtrack album anymore. While record companies have essentially allowed social media to take over the legwork of promoting their new artists as well as rediscover classic ones, executives in the '80s and '90s found that producing "Music From and Inspired By" albums for major motion pictures could act as an additional revenue stream as well as backdoor marketing for the acts on their labels.

As such, not too much attention was paid to the actual content or tone of the songs with regard to the films they were supposed to be "from" — for instance, the soundtrack for 1996's "Mission: Impossible" features a track by Britpop band Pulp entitled "I Spy," which is a lengthy diss track against affluent Londoners. But hey, it has "spy" in the title, and "Mission: Impossible" is about spies!

Nathan Fielder
HBO Max New Releases: July 2022
Nathan Fielder
With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.

The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.

HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

‘Barry’ star Bill Hader is primed to make Emmy history — if he can hold off Jason Sudeikis
Image
Barry Berkman is back, baby. Alec Berg and Bill Hader’s deeply funny comedy “Barry” has made its triumphant return to HBO after three years, and the show — and its leading (hit)man — hasn’t missed a beat.

The new season sees a troubled Barry (Hader) trying to make things right with his acting coach, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), after the latter discovered the former was responsible for murdering his girlfriend in Season 1. The two men continue to give emotionally layered but exceptionally funny performances in Season 3, playing off each other so well that it won’t be surprising if they both return to the Emmy stage later this year. But if Hader succeeds, he’ll also make Emmy history in the process.

If Hader defeats his former “Saturday Night Live” co-star and “Ted Lasso” frontman Jason Sudeikis to take home the award for Best Comedy Actor this year, he...

‘We Need To Talk About Cosby’s W. Kamau Bell Says Bill Cosby Has Become “A Catalyst In Understanding America” – Contenders TV: Docs + Unscripted
Image
We Need To Talk About Cosby is a four-part documentary in which comedian-turned-tv host W. Kamau Bell measures the groundbreaking accomplishments of Bill Cosby against the volume of women who accused him of sexually assaulting them after drugging them.

The Showtime docu, which premiered at January’s virtual Sundance Film Festival, was highlighted during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season showcase.

Contenders TV Docs + Unscripted — Deadline’s Complete Coverage

Cosby finds an interesting way into the discussion, as Bell interviews past co-workers, academics and women about their conflicted feelings. On the one hand, Cosby broke the color barrier on primetime television as the co-star of I Spy, and his work on the standup comedy stage and The Tonight Show made him a star when there were not many Black faces on the small screen. His work on the top-rated The Cosby Show made him one of...

Titus Welliver in Bosch (2014)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: June 2021
Titus Welliver in Bosch (2014)
When Bosch first premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2014, the streaming world was in a very different place. Netflix had only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black under its belt. Hulu was still a joint venture owned by multiple conglomerates. Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock didn’t even exist. Now, in June 2021, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases is highlighted by one last outing for LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.

Bosch season 7 premieres on June 25. This will be the last batch of episodes for the series, before a spinoff gets rolling for IMDb TV. For those who are not caught up on the sprawling procedural, Amazon has some other original TV series this month as well. Brazilian crime drama Dom premieres on June 4. That will be followed by the second season of the Anna Paquin-starring public relations drama Flack on June 25.

‘Succession’s’ Jeremy Strong joins a very short list of Best Drama Actor Emmy champs to defeat a co-star
Image
Just like on “Succession,” the Number One Boy got the better of Logan Roy (for now). Jeremy Strong beat his TV father Brian Cox for the Best Drama Actor Emmy on Sunday, becoming just the sixth person to topple a co-star in the category.

The “Succession” twosome were the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees, but winning against a co-star has proven to be difficult. The only drama actor champs who’ve managed to do it are “I Spy’s” Bill Cosby, who went 3-0 against Robert Culp from 1966-68; “St. Elsewhere’s” Ed Flanders and William Daniels, who beat each other (Flanders in 1983 and Daniels in 1985 and ’86); Dennis Franz, who trump two “NYPD Blue” partners, David Caruso (1994) and Jimmy Smits; and “This Is Us'” Sterling K. Brown, who defeated Milo Ventimiglia on their first go-around in 2017.

Flanders and Daniels are the only co-stars to have notched a victory over the other,...
