Tony Awards watch: Jonathan Groff to play Bobby Darin on Broadway this season
Image
Fresh off his Tony-winning turn in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’ “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff will return to the rialto next spring in the new Bobby Darin jukebox musical “Just in Time.” Tony-winning director Alex Timbers (“Moulin Rouge”) will oversee the production that is set to transform the Circle in the Square theater into a nightclub complete with a swing band.

Groff will lead a cast of 16 to tell the story of this singer/songwriter who was only 37 when he died of heart disease in 1973. Darin had a string of hits in the 1950s including the chart-topping “Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover,” “Mack the Knife” and “Just in Time.” He turned to acting in the 1960s, often opposite his wife Sandra Dee (they met making “Come September” in 1961). He reaped an Oscar bid in 1963 for his supporting turn as a shell-shocked soldier in “Captain Newman, M.D.” In the 1970s,...

Rock Hudson: Celebrating the king of rom-coms
Image
Rock Hudson was one of the biggest stars of the 1950’s and 60s: the most handsome leading man who romanced the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day, Jane Wyman, Barbara Rush, Julie Andrews and Gina Lollobrigida on the silver screen. But he was living a secret life off-screen — he was gay.

The new Max/HBO documentary “Rock Hudson All That Heaven Allowed” examines his double life and the lengths that were taken to ensure his LGBTQ+ identity wasn’t revealed It wasn’t until 1985 did the truth make the headlines when he became the first famous Hollywood star to die of AIDs.

Barbara Rush, who appeared in three films with Hudson including 1954’s “Magnificent Obsession,” told me in a 2019 L.A. Times interview that it was no secret in Tinseltown that he was gay. “His agent [Henry Willson] decided that there had been enough about the rumors about Rock being gay.

Review: "Strange Bedfellows" (1965) Starring Rock Hudson And Gina Lollbrigida; Kino Lorber Blu-RAY7 Release
Image
By Lee Pfeiffer

Kino Lorber has released a Blu-ray edition of the 1965 comedy Strange Bedfellows, which existed primarily to reunite Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida, who had a box-office hit with Come September several years before. Like most of the romantic comedies of the era, there is little to separate this from a standard sitcom episode aside from the running time. Hudson plays a London-based executive on the rise who spontaneously marries a tempestuous Italian bombshell artist played by Lollobrigida. The newlyweds find their mutually insatiable sex drives are the only thing they have in common. Politically conservative Hudson is constantly at odds with his wife's liberal activism. They soon separate but after seven years, Hudson has a reason to stall the divorce proceedings he has put in place. Seems his even more conservative boss wants to promote him to be his right hand man- on the proviso that he is happily married.

From Lollobrigida to Gidget: Romance and Heartache in Italy
Here's a brief look – to be expanded – at Turner Classic Movies' June 2017 European Vacation Movie Series this evening, June 23. Tonight's destination of choice is Italy. Starring Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donahue as the opposite of Ugly Americans who find romance and heartbreak in the Italian capital, Delmer Daves' Rome Adventure (1962) was one of the key romantic movies of the 1960s. Angie Dickinson and Rossano Brazzi co-star. In all, Rome Adventure is the sort of movie that should please fans of Daves' Technicolor melodramas like A Summer Place, Parrish, and Susan Slade. Fans of his poetic Westerns – e.g., 3:10 to Yuma, The Hanging Tree – may (or may not) be disappointed with this particular Daves effort. As an aside, Rome Adventure was, for whatever reason, a sizable hit in … Brazil. Who knows, maybe that's why Rome Adventure co-star Brazzi would find himself playing a Brazilian – a macho, traditionalist coffee plantation owner,...

Luke Cage Character Posters Unveil Harlem’s Leading Ladies
Two weeks from now, Marvel’s Hero for Hire will muscle his way onto the scene and Netflix subscribers (us included) will be basking in the Luke Cage origin story they’ve been waiting for. Going off our review, Cheo Hodari Coker’s superhero series certainly packs a bunch, combining bone-crunching action, hip-hop music and a strong turn from House of Cards star Mahershala Ali for a fantastic debut season.

We still have some time to go before clocking eyes on the entire, 13-episode season, though, and in an effort to drum up excitement, Marvel and Netflix have now rolled out the first character posters designed to introduce the leading ladies of Harlem. They are Simone Missick’s – “I don’t seek justice. I stalk it.” – Misty Knight along with Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, who is no stranger to Marvel’s small-screen universe following roles across both Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Marvel’s Hero For Hire Cleans Up The Streets Of Harlem In Luke Cage Photos
See Full Gallery Here

The gloves are firmly off (were they ever really on?) in this latest batch of images for Marvel’s Luke Cage, showcasing Mike Colter’s Hero for Hire cleaning up the streets of Harlem ahead of the show’s hotly-anticipated premiere on September 30.

First spotted by Agent of Marvel, these pics run the gamut, showcasing both our hulking hero in action, choking up thugs in broad daylight, to a shot of Mahershala Ali (House of Cards) as Cottonmouth, who will stand as one of the chief antagonists going into Luke Cage season 1.

Following up on its spectacular cover reveal, SFX has also dropped a pair of stills for Marvel’s imminent series (via Cbm), all of which are included in the gallery above.

Joining Colter on the streets of Harlem are Simone Missick as Mercedes “Misty” Knight, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, Theo Rossi as Shades,...

Say It Ain't So! Disneyland Might Be Taking Away One of Their Biggest Events

First, they took away our beloved Disney Dollars; now Disneyland might be snatching more of our favorite things right out from underneath our noses. While it's still just a rumor (thank goodness), we hope this is one wish that does not come true. Apparently, according to Wdw News Today, Disneyland's 'Forever Fireworks' might become extinct. Come September 5, the show will be no more. You might know it as Disneyland's largest fireworks show, drawing tons of peeps to its bright lights. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to keep it going, as they may be canceling it due to financial reasons. Um, anyone else want to create a Kickstarter to keep this thing going? The show was brought to the park in May of...

Leaked Post Pegs Destiny: Rise Of Iron Expansion For September Release, But Only For PS4 And Xbox One
Come September 20, Guardians will discover the fate of the Iron Lords when Destiny‘s fall expansion launches bearing the title Rise of Iron.

That’s according to a now-pulled post spotted on Bungie’s official page, seemingly revealing that the add-on – one set to be similar in size and scope as last year’s The Taken King – is on course to drop in the fall. Crucially, though, the studio’s latest slice of Dlc may only deploy for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Here’s the post in question:

Due to be revealed via Twitch tomorrow, June 9, the artwork included with the leaked article once again features Iron Banner boss Lord Saladin, flanked by two snarling wolves. Indeed the post falls in line with previous rumors regarding Rise of Iron, which is seemingly primed to whisk Guardians back to Earth, after years spent dealing with Oryx and his relentless Taken army.

PlayStation 4.5 Rumored For September Launch Ahead Of PlayStation Vr
Sony’s all-but-confirmed mid-generational hardware upgrade – reportedly codenamed PlayStation 4.5, PS4K and/or Neo – will hit the market in September of this year, according to a French multimedia distributor.

That places Sony’s new console just ahead of PlayStation Vr, which is due to make its bow at some point in October, and given that much of the PlayStation 4.5’s rumored specs allow for a smoother virtual reality experience – even negating the device’s processing box – it certainly makes a lot of sense.

A quote from Innelec Multimedia’s latest financial call slates PlayStation 4.5 for a debut before the end of the company’s fiscal year – i.e. September 30.

Here’s an extract:

“The 2016/2017 current year should be marked for the video game world by the arrival, in the first half of our fiscal year, an evolution of the Sony PS4 PS4 console with the Neo 4K with new features...

Gladers Make A Break For It In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Clip; Wes Ball Talks Threequel Plans
Come September 18, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is primed to pick up directly where its predecessor left off, as 20th Century Fox pushes full steam ahead on its Ya adaptation of James Dashner’s popular literary series. Looking beyond the sequel is director Wes Ball, who is already kicking around ideas for the next installment in the cinematic franchise, which will be based on Dashner’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure.

Rather than splitting the trilogy-capper into two parts in the vein of Harry Potter and, more recently, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, Ball has allayed early fears that Fox will needlessly stretch the source material to accommodate two movies. Taking place a full year after the events of this year’s The Scorch Trials, the filmmaker noted that the threequel stands as an interesting proposition from a creative standpoint precisely because it gives the team breathing room to flex their creative muscles,...

Latest Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Trailer Charts The Fall Of An Icon
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is so close now we can almost taste it, with exactly two weeks to go until the much-anticipated entry into Konami’s stealth series makes its bow. And to celebrate, PlayStation Japan has debuted a rather nostalgic new trailer for the upcoming sequel that bills Tpp as the conclusion of Hideo Kojima’s stealth masterclass, while also trumpeting the franchise’s longrunning history with Sony’s systems.

Setting up the fall of an icon, The Phantom Pain will fill in a missing chapter in Metal Gear Solid lore; that is, Big Boss’ decision to defect from Foxhound and his country. Set in the aftermath of Peace Walker and just prior to 1987’s Metal Gear for the Msx, Kojima’s heavy-hitter will introduce us to a grizzled, world-weary version of Big Boss, who struggles to keep a grip on the sprawling network of lies...

The Daily Show Set Is Headed to the Newseum, Where It Will Bore Schoolchildren for Years to Come
The Daily Show (1996)
Tomorrow is Jon Stewart's last night in The Daily Show's host chair, but his series' set will live on in the dead eyes of children on field trips: Washington, D.C.'s Newseum announced Wednesday that it will accept the show's donation among its collection of badass newsworthy artifacts following Stewart's final broadcast. The interactive museum also houses the largest chunk of the Berlin Wall outside of Germany and a harrowing 9/11 gallery, and previously hosted an exhibit devoted to the journalistic integrity of the Anchorman series. Kelly Clarkson: I'm in Love
Kelly Clarkson
Come September, Kelly Clarkson will have to balance two loves: boyfriend Brandon Blackstock - and football. But the Texas-born Dallas Cowboys fan, who recorded a self-penned anthem for the team in collaboration with the NFL and Pepsi, says she's hoping to combine those two loves with some game day-dates during the upcoming NFL season. "I always go to games," the recently toned singer, 30, tells People. "I usually have my [running back] Emmitt Smith jersey on because I go old-school, and he's my favorite." And while the now-retired Smith may be her favorite Cowboy, Blackstock, whom she began dating in late 2011, was at...

Susan Lucci gives cheeky cheating advice to promote new series 'Deadly Affairs' -- Exclusive Video
Susan Lucci
Who better to host a new series titled Deadly Affairs than the queen of daytime Susan Lucci? No one, honestly. Come September, the former All My Children legend will lead the aptly-named new Investigation Discovery show that takes an inside look at dalliances gone wrong, everything from “love triangles that implode to office romances exposed,” says the network’s official description for the series. “They happen in real life and, sometimes, are stranger than fiction.” Lucci’s Erica Kane might take issue with that.

To give you a taste of what’s to come on the show, Investigation Discovery has...

Suri Cruise Enrolled In Private School
Come September, the students of Avenues are going to have a very famous classmate.

Though earlier reports claimed Katie Holmes had enrolled Suri Cruise in the prestigious all-girls Catholic school Convent of the Sacred Heart, Life & Style magazine reports that Suri will actually be a student at Avenues, an exclusive new private school, which is set to open this fall in Chelsea.

Suri had previously been home-schooled, but the 6-year-old is "really excited" about starting her new school, especially after her mother told her all about the school's lunchrooms, basketball courts and various activities, a source told the magazine.

It's easy to understand why the school would appeal to Holmes, as it's just a 10-minute walk from their Chelsea apartment, overlooks the High Line, boasts a rooftop playground and has a gym with full-size basketball and volleyball courts.

Tuition to the ultra-fancy school costs nearly $40,000 a year -- which is...

R. Kelly Planned Best Of Both Worlds Collabo With Tupac Before Jay-z
In his upcoming 'Soulacoaster' autobiography, R&B great remembers planning to record with 'Pac and making the Notorious B.I.G. cry.

By Rob Markman

R. Kelly and Jay-z changed the landscape of hip-hop and R&B when they dropped their 2002 tag-team album Best of Both Worlds, but according to the Pied Piper, it was the late Tupac Shakur who originally sparked that genre-melding idea.On Tuesday Rolling Stone ran an excerpt from Kellz's upcoming autobiography, "Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me," and in the chapter titled "Yo Pac! Yo Biggie!" the singer expresses his admiration for the two slain rap greats.Kelly recalls a 1996 meeting with 'Pac in front of a hotel frequented by rappers and other music industry types. He says they planned to release a collaborative album at that meeting, but the idea came to a tragic end after Shakur was murdered later that year."Come September,...

Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in Joker (2012)
Now this is one piece of news that has turned out to be a pleasant surprise for all involved and also predicted a healthy trend in the making. Despite a 'back-in-roaring-form' Akshay Kumar as the lead protagonist in Joker, Shirish Kunder hasn't gone overboard as far as his Joker is concerned. As per trade insiders, the film has been sold to Utv at a price that would raise many an eyebrow, though with a smile and a sense of positivity.

"The film has been completed in a controlled budget, all thanks to Shirish who has made it possible since he is technically very well equipped. He planned Joker in such a way that it turns out to be commercially viable for all involved", says a source, "Utv is also mighty excited about the film's prospects since unlike Akshay's previous outings that have carried a very heavy price tag due to...

Showtime Sets ‘Homeland’ and ‘Dexter’ Return Dates
The upcoming Dexter season 7 and the highly-anticipated second season of Homeland finally have dates for fans to mark on their calendars. Come September 30th, Showtime’s resident serial killing anti-hero will usher in a new season of punishing criminals, talking to dead people, and possibly exploring a divisive romance with his adoptive sister, Deb.

Meanwhile, Homeland, the Howard Gordon-produced series that brought two Golden Globes to the network (Best Drama and Best Actress for star Claire Danes) will begin its second season with high hopes of garnering more praise – and perhaps additional awards – for the network to brag about.

Given that the combination of Dexter and Homeland worked wonders for Showtime’s ratings, it comes as no surprise that the series would be paired with one another once more. What does come as a surprise, ...

10 Things to Watch for in September as the 2011 Oscar Race Kicks into High Gear
Get ready Oscar fans. It's time to start your engines. September is here and that means the Awards Season is about to heat up. With that in mind here are ten events that will go a long way in determining which films will have a shot at winning awards once September is said and done... 1. The Venice Film Festival

August 31 - September 10

Okay. Venice technically starts in August (today in fact) and last year's Golden Lion winner, Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, didn't make any waves during Awards season. That, however, doesn't mean this year's line-up will follow suit, especially with George Clooney's The Ides of March kicking off the festivities on opening night and other possible contenders such as Steven Soderbergh's Contagion featuring it's all star cast, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with last year's Best Actor winner Colin Firth and Gary Oldman and David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method appearing at the festival.

'The type of music that I make ... is definitely underground and Southern hip-hop,' K.R.I.T. tells RapFix Live.

By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Big K.R.I.T. was already buzzing heavy before he signed his record deal with Def Jam, and on September 27 he will release his major label debut, Live From the Underground. The Mississippi rapper checked in to MTV's RapFix Live from the studio, where he is putting the finishing touches on his album, via Skype.

K.R.I.T., one of MTV Jams' Fab 5, became an underground rap favorite when he released the free mixtape K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, which played more like an album, in 2009. The project's soulful rap aesthetic and acclaim earned him a record deal, but the "Country Sh--" rapper is still holding on to his indie roots.

Comic Book Reviews: Daredevil # 2 (Vol. 3)
Written by Mark Waid

Pencils by Paulo Rivera

Published by Marvel

In stores now!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

DC could learn a lot from Marvel’s new approach to handling old hornhead, as this new series manages to act as a clean slate for the character without disrespecting- or retconning- any of the character’s established history. Come September, when DC effectively reboot their entire universe, they will inevitably have a number of angry fans who resent the changes made to their favourite characters. However, as this book proves, it is possible to start afresh and reach new readers without the need to magically undo everything.

Editor Stephen Wacker knew that Daredevil was in a rut- both as a character and as a franchise (even if Wacker’s own Shadowland series is guilty of causing said rut)- so he turned to Mark Waid, who quickly swung in with his...
