From 2010’s The Dead and its sequel to 2015’s Never Let Go, Howard J Ford has formed a habit of cracking out intense, highly distinctive thrillers featuring terrific stunt work, and The Ledge will not disappoint his fans. It begins with a simple but powerful premise. Kelly (Brittany Ashworth) is on a climbing holiday with her friend Sophie (Anaïs Parello) when they meet a group of young men. Kelly is tired and goes to bed early, but Sophie wants to stay up drinking with them. When things get out of hand and Sophie is killed, Kelly, who decided to go looking for her, captures the act on her camera, but is seen doing so. There’s no way she can outpace four guys, all taller than her, on the ground, so the only thing she can go is to grab her climbing gear and go up.

A lone witness to a shocking crime. A group of young men determined to prevent her from sharing her story. She can’t outpace them on the ground. There’s no-one else around from whom to seek help. She has only one way out: to head straight up the mountain beside them and trust in her superior climbing skills to give her the edge.
This is the set-up for Howard J Ford’s The Ledge, which screened as part of the Frightfest strand at the 2022 Glasgow Film Festival, and if you’ve followed his career to date, you’ll know that you can expect some thrilling action scenes powered by impressive stunt work. Why do we watch revenge movies? An often argued reason is catharsis. Revenge movies have a unique way of dredging up cultural anxieties and stabbing them in the back, so when the lights come up, we can feel safer about contemporary fears and issues. Howard J. Ford has managed to do this in crisp, low-budget ways with “Never Let Go” (kidnapped girls) and “The Dead” and “The Dead 2” (autoimmune viruses).

Ahead of the UK digital release of his latest film The Lockdown Hauntings on May 3rd, director & writer Howard J Ford talks about being a one-man crew, casting Tony Todd, his do-it-yourself SFX kit and losing his uncle to the pandemic.
You shot The Lockdown Huntings during the UK’s first lockdown. Was the Covid-19 outbreak the inspiration? If so, why a ghost story?
It absolutely was. I am a believer in using what you have as an indie film-maker and I had a global pandemic! There was a sudden influx of fear, isolation and anxiety. I wondered, could I do anything cinematic with that? I then heard that the virus is not even alive, yet this not-living thing was out there taking lives and not only that, it was Invisible! None of us knew how close this deadly thing was to them… I wondered, could I weave that into a plot,...

She didn't have to let go.
Since the 1997 release of "Titanic," fans have been wondering whether Rose (Kate Winslet) really had to let Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) slip into the icy waters to freeze to death. Now, Winslet has admitted Rose probably could've saved her star-crossed lover, simply by sharing.
"I think he could have actually fit on that bit of door," she said on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."
The question of the door came back up when Winslet gave DiCaprio a big hug at the SAG Awards after her former co-star won the Best Actor trophy for his role in "The Revenant." That ignited a flurry on Twitter, with fans joking that they should "Never let go."

Bear Story [Historia de un oso] – Chile – 11 minutes
While Gabriel Osorio Vargas‘ Chilean short film Bear Story tells the tale of a sad, lonely old bear, it does ultimately prove uplifting. Here’s a creature tinkering tirelessly in his shop to put the finishing touches on what could very well be his life’s work and yet any and all success or failure is met with silence. There’s no one else in his small home to celebrate or lament—just the indentations of two bodies on his mattress permanently displaying that love and company existed not too long ago. How did it come to this? We’ll never know and that’s a wonderful thing. Instead we discover that love’s strength—strong enough to render distance and death harmless. His...

Director John Guillermin has passed away at age 89. The British director was best known for his high profile action films including the 1974 blockbuster "The Towering Inferno" and the 1976 remake of "King Kong", a production that was plagued by troubles but ended up being quite profitable. Guillermin was despised by some in the industry for his mercurial temperament and harsh methods of directing actors. However, no one could deny his talents. He was equally adept at directing scenes of intimate drama as well as explosive, large-scale action scenes. Among his best films was the 1969 production of "The Bridge at Remagen" which was interrupted by the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Guillermin and producer David L. Wolper managed to salvage the film by moving the production elsewhere, a monumental task that they completed successfully. Other Guillermin films include "Death on the Nile", "The Blue Max", "El Condor", "Shaft in Africa", "Skyjacked", "Never Let Go...

We knew Leonardo DiCaprio was talented, but damn. He travels through time and paints masterpiece too? Never let go indeed.
Everyone make mistakes, but Fox News anchor Shepard Smith made one funny enough to share. Because Leo did not, in fact, give us the Mona Lisa. Smith accidentally credited the modern actor instead of true Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci. Totally understand a quick slip of the tongue, but he seemed to miss his own gaffe and didn't correct it. He jut kept reporting on the research to identify the Mona Lisa model. Someone in the control room probably should've gotten in his ear right away ... but then we wouldn't have this magic.

Read More: For Your Consideration: Which Films That We've Already Seen Will Make Oscar's Cut? "Never let go," pleads the tagline for "Everest," a bracing depiction of an ill-fated 1996 expedition to climb the Himalayan mountain. While that likely refers to the risky exploits depicted onscreen, it could just as well serve as a mantra for woozy audiences enduring their own traumas through Baltasar Kormákur's nausea-inspiring adventure. Equal parts spectacle and harrowing survival tale, "Everest" also serves as a kind of bid for the survival of the ever-imperiled moviegoing experience, with the 3D IMAX-enhanced thrills masterfully engineered to bring its mountain-climbing fears to horrific light. Released in the same window of time as the documentary "Meru," another depiction of climbers struggling through the vertical Himalayan landscape, "Everest" may not be the foremost realistic portrait of such a high stakes undertaking....

abstew here. We might be in the midst of the current Oscar season, but it's never too early to start thinking about...next year already. Now, I can hear you all saying, "Good god, man! The ceremony is still a month away! Can't we at least hand out the statues for 2014 before thinking of 2015?!" Blame these just released pictures from Entertainment Weekly from the set of current Best Director nominee Alejandro González Iñárritu's next film set to come out on Christmas, The Revenant, because they are already screaming, Oscar! The film is based on the novel by Michael Punke and is a grizzly story of revenge! Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Hugh Glass, a fur trapper in the 1820s Wild West that is left for dead after a bear attack. He miraculously survives but seeks out vengeance on the men that left him for dead. The film is being shot...

Wu-Tang Clan have a release date for their oft-delayed new album "A Better Tomorrow," and they're sticking with it: mark Dec. 2 on your calendar. Perhaps as a sign of good faith, the crew has dropped another actual new song, "Ruckus in B Minor," from the set. Pre-order has also gone up, and fans can get three tracks straightaway if they so choose to do so: "Ruckus" plus two other previously released tunes, "Keep Watch" and "Ron O'Neal." What may also surprise Wu-Tang supporters -- aside from the shock that the group is releasing their first effort in seven years -- is that the voice of the late Ol' Dirty Bastard (aka Odb) will be, in some manner, present on the set. Here is the tracklist for Wu-Tang Clan's "A Better Tomorrow": 1. Ruckus In B Minor 2. Felt 3. 40th Street Black / We Will fight 4. Mistaken Identity 5. Hold the Heater 6. Crushed...

Recently arriving on Blu-ray and DVD in the Us and coming soon to UK TV is The Dead 2, Howard and Jonathan Ford’s follow up to the 2010 African zombie movie. Now shifting focus to a new set of characters in India, the new location provided its own set of rewards and challenges, which The Ford Brothers spoke about during a recent interview:
How do you two write? For example, does one pace the floor whilst the other types?
Jon: Ha, that’s funny! You hit the nail on the head! Normally you will find Howard frantically writing away while I pace the room acting out the scenarios and shouting the lines like some demented theatre actor on steroids. The writing stage is one phase of the project where we work together very well. We are almost never in conflict with each other, each jumping in where the other got to...

This one doesn't sound very Dread-worthy, but only time will tell and Ford has proved to be quite the force so we'll keep an eye on it if need be.

Untitled Bowe Bergdahl Project
"Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal are re-teaming again for a new project at Annapurna Pictures concentrating on recently released American P.O.W. Bowe Bergdahl. The pair are reportedly taking their time to figure out how this could work as a film.
They have competition though as Fox Searchlight has bought a Rolling Stone article about the case and is planning a rival project - one with "Little Children" director Todd Field involved.
Untitled Chazelle Project
20th Century Fox has acquired an untitled pitch from "Whiplash" writer/director Damien Chazelle. The project is described as a "high-concept and character-driven genre film" inspired by 1970s paranoia thrillers.
Story specifics are being kept secret. Shawn Levy will produce. Chazelle is expected to next direct "La La Land" with Emma Watson and Miles Teller.

I just watched all four "Scary Movie" movies consecutively and my brain is currently curled up in a ball shivering in a far corner of my skull, asking what it did to deserve that.
That said, it is true that you will know more about the "Scary Movie" franchise — a Lot more — after having read this piece. We here at NextMovie would hate to see you go into "Scary Movie 5" without having a lick of knowledge about the first four movies. Imagine the embarrassment in front of your friends! Hands on your hearts, "Titanic" diehards! What you're about to hear may just make you die. Hard.
Kate Winslet secretly wed beau Ned Rocknroll, nephew of Virgin Atlantic tycoon Richard Branson, earlier this month, People reported. But here's the detail that'll make you swoon: The ceremony was so hush-hush that the happy couple's parents weren't even informed — but Kate's "Titanic" co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, was. And he reportedly walked her down the aisle, giving her away to her new husband. Cue happycry!
This is the third marriage for 37-year-old Winslet, and the second for Rocknroll (born under the name Abel Smith, but legally changed for reasons of maximum silliness, we assume). The two were reportedly married in front of Winslet's two children and a few friends and family.
Winslet and DiCaprio have been spotted together many times through the years since co-starring in 1997's "Titanic," and even had an onscreen reunion in 2008's "Revolutionary Road,...

You know how some scenes just really get to you and make you inexplicably mad? Whether it's a moral choice a character makes and you don't agree with or an old cliche that bugs you every time, there's no getting over these sequences.
Inspired by a recent Reddit thread, we asked some of our writers to voice their opinions and share the scenes that irk them to no end.
Harvey's Miraculous Car Crash in "The Dark Knight"
I believe in Harvey Dent. I don't believe in Harvey Dent being able to shoot the driver of a car he's riding in without getting completely destroyed in the ensuing crash. For a film series so firmly "grounded in reality," that scene (among others) makes absolutely zero effing sense. -Josh Wigler, MTV Splash Page Editor

A fifteen-year-old movie debate has finally ended with the help of some science. As promised, the Mythbusters took on the challenge of recreating that iconic and—to some—infuriating scene at the end of "Titanic" with the help of James Cameron.
After a recent photo surfaced online, arguing that Jack could have easily fit onto Rose's floating door, Cameron rebutted claiming that is wasn't an issue of space but of buoyancy.
Taking on that challenge, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman proposed to test the theories "Mythbusters"-style, and Cameron even volunteered to help out.
Check out the video after the jump!
The trio first needed to settle on the conditions of the experiment. They decided that Jack and Rose were floating for a little over an hour before a rescue boat showed up, so that's how long Adam and Jamie would have to stay above water.

Hollywood's biggest epic sets sail once again this week as James Cameron's dimensionally expanded "Titanic 3D" hits theaters to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the eponymous ship's voyage (we can assure you that making more money has nothing to do with it).

Composer John Barry may be best known for his 007 scores, but we look beyond Bond for a detailed look at the rest of his extraordinary career...
Timeless, innovative, expansive and sensual, the music of John Barry Prendergast is a thought-provoking testament to a man who set the bar high and kept on raising it.
For many of us, the work of British composer, Barry, is synonymous with the Bond franchise, and there's no mistaking his contribution to that legacy. His work (along with that of Monty Norman) came to signify the arch, dangerously seductive swagger and cool, ambivalent melancholy that is the man behind the martini glass. He captured a world of intrigue, code and double meaning, of subterfuge, ambiguity, covert operation and sexuality. His was a trenchant and identifiable yet intriguingly elliptical and diverse musical sensibility that lassoed widely different vocalists from Louis Armstrong to Duran Duran, invariably producing something magnetic and memorable.

Composer most closely associated with the golden age of James Bond but whose scores ranged from Midnight Cowboy to Dances With Wolves
John Barry, who has died aged 77 following a heart attack, will always be associated with the golden age of James Bond, but though much of his most famous music was written to accompany the outlandish adventures of 007, his work covered a huge variety of moods and styles. Barry wrote epic, sweeping film scores for Zulu (1964), Born Free (1966) and Out of Africa (1985), introduced blues and jazz themes into The Chase (1966) and The Cotton Club (1984), and conceived the shivery, sinister music for The Ipcress File (1965). He even became something of a pop star in his own right.
He was born Jonathan Barry Prender- gast in York, where his father ran a chain of cinemas. His mother was a talented musician, but had abandoned the attempt to establish herself as a concert pianist.

John Barry's soundtracks often outstripped the films for which they were written. And despite a prickly reputation, when I met him he was the perfect host
While it would be a little outlandish to say that John Barry lived a James Bond lifestyle, it wasn't hard to imagine him in the world of The Persuaders, driving an open-top E-type to the south of France, immaculately turned out, eloping with the au pair. He was, more than many familiar faces, a movie star.
The theme from The Persuaders was – ignoring the James Bond theme, which existed like air – my introduction to the John Barry sound. The opening notes of its electric harpsichord matched high-contrast screen images of Tony Curtis and Roger Moore and created great excitement. It was the soundtrack to many Sunday lunchtimes in the early-70s.
