- In the original Japanese version, there is no dialogue prior to Rodan's attack on the two honeymooners. The American version later added dialogue in which the young woman was joking about her husband taking pictures of the volcano rather than her. Also, in the original version the scene plays a little longer with Rodan making a pass above the couple, with his shadow passing over them, before he swoops in to carry the couple off.
- In the American version, the jets bombard the Rodans' volcanic lair prior to their attack on Fukuoka while in the Japanese version the first Rodan flies out of his lair without any provocation.
- The American version features narration by Shigeru (voiced by Keye Luke) recounting all the events that happened surrounding the first appearance of the Rodans.
- In the American version, the name of the volcano is changed from Mount Aso to Mount Toya.
- In the original version, the helicopter search for the Rodans occurs after the two monsters attack Fukuoka while in the American version the helicopter search occurs before the attack.
- In the original version, the scene where Kashiwagi and his staff examine the photos taken by Sunagawa's friend is slightly longer and ends with Kashiwagi comparing the photo of Rodan's wing tip with a drawing of a pteranadon.
- In the original version, the news reporter is only talking about the sightings of the "mysterious UFO". However, in the American version it is edited to sound like he is talking about not only the UFO but the pending eruption of Mt. Aso/Mt. Toya.
- In the original version, the warnings about new activity at the volcano takes place before Rodan is first spotted while the American version changes it to just before the couple are snatched by him.
- In the original version, the reports of Mt. Aso's (Mt. Toya in the American version) activity is announced before the first sighting of Rodan. However, in the American version it is moved to after the first sighting.
- The 2009 Japanese Blu-Ray release removed a number of obvious wirework traces from the video footage, such as strings holding up the flying monsters and aircraft, though some shots were inexplicably left unedited.
- In the original version the fight scene between Yoshi and Goro is longer, but in the American version the fight has been shortened.
- In the original version the fight between Goro and Yoshi plays a little longer than in the American version. Also, in the original version the fight was attributed to Goro being upset over a spilled drink while drinking with Yoshi the night before while in the American version it was attributed to the growing feelings of unease among the mining crew.
- Much of the original musical score replaced in the US version.
- The American version has both monsters emerging from the underground lair. However, in the original version, the second Rodan doesn't appear until after the first one begin's his attack on Fukuoka.
- A prologue which supposedly attempts to link Rodan's origin to the atomic bomb was added to the American version of this film.
