Qumra master Atom Egoyan has expressed his desire for a new “wave” of Armenian filmmakers and encouraged international projects to consider the region for post-production.
Speaking to Screen following his Qumra masterclass at the Doha incubator, Egoyan – who is Canadian, born in Egypt and of Armenian heritage – described Armenia as “an extraordinarily resilient, stubborn country” with “a rich cinema history”.
“I’m nothing but positive about the ability to make films in Armenia,” said Egoyan, who did acknowledge “political instability” following the Azerbaijani military offensive in the disputed Artsakh region on September 19 and 20 last year, which has been classified as...

Atom Egoyan has revealed that he was so traumatized by the negative reception to his Ryan Reynolds-starring thriller The Captive at the Cannes Film Festival that he will never return again with a film.
The pedophilia thriller, starring Reynolds as a man dealing with the disappearance of his nine-year-old daughter, was widely panned by the Cannes critics corps when it world premiered in competition in 2014.
“It was actually the worst reviewed film that I ever did. We should never have taken it to Cannes,” the Canadian-Armenian director told a masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra meeting in Qatar on Wednesday.
“It got this really crazy reception. It was in competition on the Friday night. I haven’t been to Cannes since because I just don’t ever want to come back to what we had that night. The last couple of films, we showed in Venice or Berlin.

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.

Matt Johnson’s drama about the meteoric rise of the world’s first smartphone, before its competitive collapse, bowed in Berlin.

Amanda Seyfried in Seven Veils
A resident of Toronto himself, Atom Egoyan has a longstanding relationship with the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s really the only place fitting for the première of his latest work, Seven Veils, a project which has been with him, in one form or another, for almost 30 years. A complex, multi-layered work, it stars Amanda Seyfried as the director of a production of Richard Strauss’ operatic take on Salome – more specifically, a restaging of a work by an esteemed director and her former lover, Charles, whose shadow hangs heavily over it, as does the fact that Charles drew on her own troubled past for inspiration. Further complications emerge from interactions between cast and crew members, most notably Johann (Michael Kupfer-Radecky), the exploitative leading man, and Clea (Rebecca Liddiard), the young woman from the props department charged with making a version of his head.

Art and life are inextricably entangled in Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, a wildly ambitious, visually intoxicating reinterpretation of the Richard Strauss opera, Salome, that proves to possess almost as many layers as the Biblical princess’ famous dance routine.
After spending the past two and a half decades struggling to get his groove back following the 1997 success of The Sweet Hereafter, the filmmaker reconnects with his pet themes of alienation and family trauma, taking inspiration from his own revisionist staging of the opera, which he remounted for the Canadian Opera Company earlier this year. Using that production as a leap-off point, Egoyan interweaves a behind-the-scenes narrative involving a young director (Amanda Seyfried) who is challenged to put her own stamp on the oft-interpreted material while exorcising a number of personal demons in the process.

Atom Egoyan knew Amanda Seyfried was a “remarkable young actress” when he first met her.The 63-year-old filmmaker has reunited with ‘Mamma Mia!’ star Amanda, 37, for new film ‘Seven Veils’ after initially working with her on the erotic thriller ‘Chloe’ in 2009 and recalled spotting her talent then.He told ScreenRant: "‘Chloe’ is in itself a remake, and it was a project that I was really excited to direct, but it wasn't my script. I didn't have the same freedoms that I have when I'm doing my own script and my own production. But I certainly had access the moment Amanda walked into that audition for ‘Chloe’. This is a remarkable young actress who just was so emotionally available.”For the upcoming movie, Amanda plays a theatre director who is dealing with repressed trauma as she prepares to mount a production of the opera ‘Salome’ and Atom went on to...

Atom Egoyan’s “Seven Veils” will have its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced on Wednesday. The Canadian filmmaker of “Exotica,” “The Sweet Hereafter” and “Chloe” will present his film at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in a special Sept. 8 “Avant-premiere” screening held in partnership with the Canadian Opera Company.
“Seven Veils” stars Amanda Seyfried and was inspired by Egoyan’s recent experience with a revival of his 1996 version of the opera “Salome,” which he directed for the first time in 1996 for the Canadian Opera Company. In the film, Seyfried plays a theater director who is haunted by the past while mounting a version of that opera, the most famous work of her mentor.
Ambur Braid and Michael Kupfer-Radecky, who appeared Egoyan’s recent staging of the opera, will reprise their roles of Salome and John the Baptist in the film. After the Avant-premiere screening on Sept.

The Toronto International Film Festival has set the world premiere for a new film from one of Canada’s own, director Atom Egoyan.
Egoyan helms “Seven Veils,” which stars his “Chloe” actress Amanda Seyfried. The thriller will debut with a special screening, in partnership with the Canadian Opera Company, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on September 8 before premiering in earnest as part of the festival’s Special Presentation lineup on September 10.

Exclusive: Douglas Smith (Big Little Lies), Mark O’Brien (Arrival), Rebecca Liddiard (Alias Grace) and Vinessa Antoine have been cast opposite Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout) in Seven Veils, the new feature from filmmaker Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter).
The project wrapped principal photography in Toronto last week.
Seven Veils follows Jeanine (Seyfried), an earnest theatre director, who has been given the daunting task of remounting her former mentor’s most famous work, the opera Salome. Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine allows her repressed trauma to color the present as she re-enters the opera world after so many years away.
Smith and Seyfried previously worked together on HBO series Big Love, playing siblings Ben and Sarah Henrickson.
Pic is written and directed by Egoyan, who also produces alongside Niv Fichman (Enemy), Simone Urdl (The Captive), Fraser Ash (BlackBerry) and Kevin Krikst (BlackBerry).

Witches Council elder Methuselah doesn't mind if you smoke and doesn't care if you burn.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hosts a somewhat less than venerated group of wise wizards in season 2, albeit a reluctant one. Hilda Spellman summons the Dishonorable Council of Witches to deal with a High Priest who has gone off his rocker, honestly. Father Blackwood is changing the tenets of the Church of Night, which he re-anti-christened the Church of Judas, and declared intentions to break away from the Churches of Darkness. The council, which previously bound Sabrina's warlock cousin Ambrose to the Spellman house for hundreds of years, is headed by Father Methuselah.
Methuselah is played by William B. Davis, who besides being a sitting member of the Witches Council, played Carl Gerhard Bush Spender, better known as Cigarette Smoking Man, who was part of the State Department's secretive "Syndicate" which oversaw alien colonization on The X-Files.

Al Pacino seems to have a new lady in his life — one who is half his age.
The actor, 78, was photographed stepping out with Israeli actress Meital Dohan, 39, in West Hollywood, California, on Sunday while shopping for furniture at a Restoration Hardware store.
The former Weeds actress dressed up in a bright yellow skirt and a patterned top which she paired with pink sunglasses while Pacino was more subdued in an all-black ensemble.
Reps for both stars did not immediately respond to People’s request for comment.

Love’s Labours Found: Pacino’s Wilde Meditations at Long Last Find Life
Oscar Wilde’s 1891 tragedy Salome (originally written in French) has generated countless resurrections since its inception. Most prominently, Richard Strauss’ famed 1905 opera remains a theatrical staple. But there’s a long cinematic romance with the play, including Russian stage and film star Nazimova in the infamous 1922 version directed by Charles Bryant (which reputedly was assembled by an all Lgbtq cast and crew in its entirety). Other bright spots include Ken Russell’s version, who re-fashioned it for his infamous 1988 title Salome’s Last Dance; and Julianne Moore does a…...

2011 was a breakthrough year for Jessica Chastain, in which work done over several years was finally seen by a wowed public: Features she made with directors Jeff Nichols, Terrence Malick and Ralph Fiennes premiered, as did the Hollywood adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's novel The Help. But at that year's Venice festival, the film elite got a glimpse of work she had done long before: Al Pacino's Wild Salome, a doc in the mode of his Looking for Richard, chronicled the preparations for a Los Angeles staging of Oscar Wilde's Salome in 2006, which starred a then-unknown Chastain in the...

Above: Us three-sheet poster for The Private Life of Henry VIII (Alexander Korda, UK, 1933).
The great Charles Laughton may not have been the prettiest of movie stars, but he had a presence that many matinee idols would have killed for (as the current retrospective running at Film Forum will attest). In an era in which glamor was everything, studio marketers may have struggled with how to present Laughton’s unconventional looks and his larger-than-life portrayals of larger-than-life characters (so many monsters, murderers, tyrants, or simply overbearing fathers) to the public. In most of the posters for his most famous film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), he is all but a silhouette, a spoiler alert to his monstrous transformation as Quasimodo. And in some posters for The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), the film for which he won his first Oscar, Henry is made to look more like the Hans Holbein...

The great Italian poster artist Anselmo Ballester, who worked for more than half a century, has more breathtaking designs than I can encompass in one single post. So I thought I’d concentrate for now on one of his favorite subjects: Rita Hayworth, the Hollywood goddess in the face of whom Ballester seemed especially inspired.
I only came across Ballester’s work recently, struck by his unusually torrid compositions and his superb handling of color, as well as something strange about the eyes of many of his protagonists (something about the whites of their eyes, not much in evidence in these posters, but often giving the impression that his subjects are the undead). When I asked Dave Kehr, author of the Museum of Modern Art’s invaluable 2003 book Italian Film Posters and an avid collector himself, about Ballester I knew I was onto a good thing when he called him “for my money,...

Salt (Unrated) There's an unrated cut and a director's cut on top of the theatrical cut. I guess they are trying really hard to get you to buy this in order to make turning it into a franchise feasible. Personally I'd love to see where they take this character, but I won't be rushing out to buy this one in order to see it happen. Easy A I'm kicking myself for not requesting a review copy of this one. I was in Toronto when it screened and never made it to the theaters to see it for myself. I have already added it to my Netflix queue, but I also just shot off a late request for a review copy so hopefully it will come through. I have heard plenty of good word of mouth for Easy A and...
