Walt Colby is the straight-laced attorney for the legitimate businesses of mobster Hap Richie's syndicate. Walt is thinking about getting out in not liking Hap asking him to work on the criminal side, such as defending Hap's associates in their criminal dealings, including charges of murder. What Walt wants to do in getting out is marry his girlfriend, lounge singer Flaxy Martin. While Walt is aware of Flaxy's association to Hap in having met her through him, he is unaware that Flaxy is unofficially on his payroll, among her duties to monitor what Walt does so that Hap can better manipulate him. In a measure meant to protect and save Flaxy, Walt is convicted of a murder he didn't commit. Walt has to decide what to do to save himself, and what to do about Flaxy if he does believe she was complicit in setting him up. What may factor into his decisions is a chance meeting with Nora Carson, a Good Samaritan who has reasons of her own for helping a stranger. What may also factor into what happens is if Flaxy gains a conscience.
