Boom goes the daddy

Warning: Spoilers
"The Three Troubledoers" is an Americvan 17-minute live action short that was released briefly after World War II, so it is already over 70 years old. Director is Oscar nominee Edward Bernds and writer is Jack White. This is another Three Stooges short film we got here that takes us into the back then immensely successful western genre. We have a hunky bad guy who wants to marry the damsel in distress played by Stooges regular Christine McIntyre, but Curly's promotion to sheriff, intention to catch the evildoer and interest in the leading lady get considerably in the way, especially as said marriage is based on the villain blackmailing the girl with the kidnapping of her father. Like the other Stooges shorts, it is a black-and-white film and you can easily see how sick Curly is here already sadly. Still I was positively surprised by this one as it entertained me better than most other Stooges shorts that I am usually pretty critical about. Especially the plays on words were top-notch and the physical action was also decent. Surprises me a bit this is not among those they remade later with Shemp on board and it is not among the most, probably not even among their more known, so to me it is certainly really underseen. The title is a bit random and may fit every Stooges work basically, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. A boo though for Larry really feeling almost nonexistent in here in the shadow of Curly. The ending with the freed father's reaction to groom Curly was hilarious too. I give this one a thumbs-up. Go check it out. Also liked the plot here more than usual as it never got lost in stupid physical comedy like it is unfortunately often the case in the Stooges works I have seen and I have seen a lot. That's all, folks.

Stooges strike the funny bone despite an ill Curly
jimtinder11 March 2005
"Three Troubledoers," filmed in May 1945, is one of a dozen or so Stooge films from 1945-46 that features an ill Curly Howard. Earlier that year, he had had a few small strokes, limiting his physical and verbal comedic talents. Despite his illness, Curly rises to the occasion in this film, marking "Three Troubledoers" among the best Stooge films from this period.

The Stooges come to the aid of lovely Nell (played wonderfully by the equally lovely Christine McIntyre), who is being blackmailed into marriage by evil Badlands Blackie (played to the hilt by Dick Curtis). Curly becomes the town's sheriff, while Moe and Larry become his deputies. Nell promises to marry Curly if he can spare her father from Blackie's evil machinations. Can the Stooges save him in time?

Curly manages some laughs in his stint as Justice of the Peace. Seeing him with a hairpiece is funny enough! Other funny scenes include the setting sun that rises back up again, the attempt to remove the dog collar from Curly's neck, and Curly's reaction to Nell's father.

While most films from this time period are difficult to watch because of Curly's illness, "Three Troubledoers" is not, because Curly rallies his energy for this film in much the same way as he would in "Micro-Phonies" (made after "Three Troubledoers," but released earlier).

This film is featured on the DVD "Stooges and the Law." 9 out of 10.

Sticks And Stones Will Break My Bones But Names.......
ccthemovieman-129 March 2008
This was a very funny episode with a lot of laughs, which included insults, lots of action, a ridiculous romance and all kinds of goofy things.

Here's an example of the names and name-calling in just the first six minutes of this Three Stooges western episode, which takes place in "Deadman's Gulch:"

"Badlands Blackie, Skullbone Pass, Coney Island Curly, Mashed Potato Head, Over-sized polecat, egghead, dirty double-crosser, skunk, porcupine, dummy, numb-skull, rat" and "old billy-goat." Yeah, Moe is responsible for most of the insults.

Curly is in his prime here, complete with squeaky voice, a bunch "nyuks" and gobble-gobble sounds and good physical slapstick.

If Curly can capture Blackie and save Nell's father, she'll marry him.

Good luck, Curly!

Warning: Spoilers
"The Three Troubledoers" is a Three Stooges short directed by Ed Bernds. He stands out as the best director the Stooges ever worked with, and almost all of his efforts with the boys are splendid. "Troubledoers," however, is one of the only Bernds-directed Stooge films that misses the mark. Basically there are two problems: Curly's declining health, and Larry's insignificance (he has perhaps the fewest lines he's ever had in a Stooge film and is given very little to do). On the PLUS side, this short highly benefits from the performances of two supporting players: Christine McIntyre as the lovely, distressed Nell, and Dick Curtis as the menacing outlaw Badlands Blackie.

Highlights: When sheriff Curly disguises himself as the Justice of the Peace, he has some amusing dialogue ("Do you take this horse collar for your lawful wedded harness?"), and he attempts to place the wedding ring upon his own finger instead of the finger of Blackie's unwilling bride Nell; later on, when a real Justice of the Peace tries to do the same thing, Blackie shouts, "Oh, no, you don't!" The Stooges' makeshift bazooka backfires, actually shooting soot into Moe's eyes, a real-life accident.

Again, "The Three Troubledoers" was unfortunately not worth the time and effort, but this slight setback is more than made up for in most of the other Stooge films directed by the incomparable Ed Bernds.

Very good Three Stooges short! Christine McIntyre and Dick Curtis are great in this short!
Movie Nuttball30 September 2004
The Three Stooges has always been some of the many actors that I have loved. I love just about every one of the shorts that they have made. I love all six of the Stooges (Curly, Shemp, Moe, Larry, Joe, and Curly Joe)! All of the shorts are hilarious and also star many other great actors and actresses which a lot of them was in many of the shorts! In My opinion The Three Stooges is some of the greatest actors ever and is the all time funniest comedy team!

This one is a very good Three Stooges western short. The Stooges are really good. Christine McIntyre and Dick Curtis put on a great show here. She looks excellent and she puts on a great performance as a pitiful character. Curtis looks good and different without his trademark mustache. His Blackie character is a great villain. Also appearing are Hank Bell, Steve Clark, Budd Fine, Joe Garcia, Ethan Laidlaw, Blackie Whiteford, and Victor Travers. I recommend this Three Stooges short!

The Three Troubledoers (1946)

*** (out of 4)

Entertaining short has The Three Stooges going into a Western town where a local woman is being forced to marry an outlaw who has kidnapped her father. The woman promises Curly that she'll marry him if he can rescue her father.

If you're a fan of the Stooges then you know that there were quite a few shorts that had the boys in a Western setting. There's really nothing new to be found here but if you're a fan of the series then you should laugh enough here to make this worth watching. I personally thought there were quite a few very funny scenes but the highlight would have to be Curly going up against a dummy and not realizing that it's the real bandit.
