- Taxi driver Tanu Paalu and tourist guide Ansa Koskeli fall in love. Both are unemployed, but the success of a song by Tanu and Ansa leads to them being hired. Their love becomes contentious when a tune in the song causes a disagreement.
- Tanu Paalu, a taxi driver, has a crush on tourist guide Ansa Koskel and follows the tourist bus everywhere - much to the annoyance of Jopi Rinne, a bus driver who is also pursuing Ansa. When Jopi tries to forcefully kiss Ansa and is rebuffed, he retaliates by hinting to Tanu that he only gets "seconds": Tanu catches Jopi, carries him onto the bus, and locks him inside.
In the evenings, Tanu plays saxophone in the DoReMi-orchestra in a restaurant of the same name and, seeing Ansa dancing with her supervisor, Adolphson, the travel agency manager, acts so intrusively that Ansa is offended and, citing a headache, asks the manager to escort her home. However, the man drives up to the traveler's lodge and gets an earful from Ansa for his trouble.
During the next day's tour, Ansa finds a bracelet in front of the bus and puts it on her wrist, intending to return it for a reward. When the owner, a tourist, sees his bracelet in Ansa's hand, he accuses him of theft and takes the matter to the head of the travel agency, who fires Ansa; Jopi is present and knows the truth of the matter, but does not stand up for Ansa.
Tanu hears about Ansa's dismissal from his brother Leo, who has come to the scene of a scrap-collection drive for school-leavers and seeks out Ansa, who is now working as a salesman at his mother Siiri's kiosk. Together they go to a beach cafe, where Tanu finally finds the tune he has been working on all day and to which Ansa has found the words. This tune of youth is soon on everyone's lips and Tanu is forced to answer for his "fad" to the police inspector, who warns Tanu but is himself infected by the "idiotic song".
Anger and Suoni, the two managers who constantly play boyish pranks on each other, are worried because their restaurant Sensation remains empty. They decide to use the songwriter who caused the frenzy as a prop, but when they have dinner at DoReMi, their characteristic prank causes Tanu, whom they don't know, to blow flour from his saxophone and get fired. To make matters worse, the next morning Tanu can't use his car because he hasn't paid the mortgage.
Tanu and Ansa lift their spirits by singing "I saw a bright sky" at Siiri's kiosk, which draws an enthusiastic crowd around them. Toppo Tatti, a Karelian man who has been searching for his brother Aku in the hustle and bustle of Helsinki, inquires at the police station just as Tanu and Ansa and their audience turn up to confess that they have been guilty of singing again. Topo thinks they should appear on the radio, wherever the inspector sends them. Tanu and Ansa go live on the air to sing a tune of their youth because the opera singer Diabolo happens to have a sore throat. Anger and Suoni hear the broadcast and rush to the radio station but can't reach Tanu and Ansa, who have already reached the cafe and are arguing about a tune.
Siiri and her florist friend Aku get a chance to appear on the radio as a result of a misunderstanding, and Anger and Suoni mistake them for the singers they are looking for. But by the evening they have the right performers in their restaurant: Ansa arrives with a female orchestra, Tanu with a male orchestra. No agreement is reached and the result is a race song and a race song that end up in a scuffle. Both are fired, which they accept, accompanied by two months' notice. This allows Tanu to reclaim his car and Ansa also gets her job as a tourist guide back, while Jopi apologetically pleads guilty to the sacking and settles the matter with the manager.
The following evening, the Sensation is again full to the delight of Anger and Suoni, but the audience is restless as they wait for the same show as the night before. Ansa's sister Laila, who works as a waitress in the restaurant and has all along recommended her sister as the singer for the place, sets out to guide her managers in their search for Ansa and Tanu. They are not to be found at home, having made up and spending romantic moments in the park, where they are finally found and hurriedly brought by car to the restaurant - with a large entourage including Aku and Toppo, who is finally meeting his brother. Ansa and Tanu repeat their attraction, the audience joins in with the tune of Youth and gives the couple a rousing round of applause. Ansa and Tanu kiss and begin to accept congratulations from relatives and friends.
