Bruce Bennett, a former college football star and Olympic athlete, had been author Edgar Rice Burroughs' first choice to play Tarzan in the M-G-M version of his novels. But Bennett was injured filming their first movie, and had to be replaced by Johnny Weissmuller. This version of Tarzan was overseen by Burroughs' own production company, and presented its title character more closely resembling what Burroughs had originally written.
This film is mentioned in the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel "La Mala Hora" (In Evil Hour).
