The Unknown Ranger was Harry Cohn's attempt to launch a B western star like Hoppy, Gene, or Roy. I don't have to give last names, you all know who I'm talking about. After a career in B films, Bob Allen, cowboy from Long Island made a half a dozen or so westerns as Ranger Bob Allen. As this was his first film, he could go undercover and not have his cover revealed until well into the plot.
Of course dressed as he is you know right away he's the hero. And having Harry Woods in the film guarantees you know on sight who the villain is. The idea Woods was in serious competition for crinoline heroine Martha Tibbett's hand, unthinkable.
In the first of these Ranger Bob films, Allen is sent undercover to find who's been stealing all kinds of stock, cattle, horses, I'm sure chickens if there's any around. Ranger Bob cleans up the mess, wins Tibbetts, jails Woods, and even picks up a sidekick in Hal Taliaferro.
The only question I have is an audience poll. Who do you think looks better in the cowboy suit, Allen or the little kid in the film?
