Elle Fanning Joins ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ as Effie Trinket
Image
Elle Fanning has joined Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” as Effie Trinket, the Capitol stylist played by Elizabeth Banks in the original “Hunger Games” series.

Set a quarter-century before the original series, “Sunrise on the Reaping” tells the story of how Haymitch Abernathy, the future mentor to Katniss Everdeen, became the first District 12 resident to win the Hunger Games.

Elle Fanning joins a cast led by Joseph Zada as Haymitch and also includes Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, Ben Wang and Ralph Fiennes.

“From the moment Suzanne released the book, one question echoed from fans around the world: Who will play Effie? Elizabeth Banks made her iconic—so who could honor that legacy while bringing us back to Effie’s early, most formative days? For us, there was only one answer,” Lionsgate motion picture group co-president Erin Westerman said.

Drew Barrymore movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Drew Barrymore is a child of Hollywood royalty and a Golden Globe winning actress whose career has spanned nearly her entire life, making her first credited screen performance at the age of three. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Barrymore was born to a celebrated acting family though she never really knew her famous ancestors. Her grandfather was John Barrymore, star of “Grand Hotel”, “Twentieth Century” and “Dinner at Eight” among others. She is also the great grand niece of Oscar winners Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Lionel won one of the earliest Oscars as Best Actor for “A Free Soul” in 1931 but is probably best remembered as the villainous Mr. Potter of the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” His sister Ethel won the 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “None but the Lonely Heart...

10 Best Sci-Fi Movies You Totally Forgot About
Image
The science fiction genre in cinema is roughly one hundred and twenty-five years old, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon frequently cited as the film industry's first major work within the genre. While the silent era produced many influential science fiction movies, such as Metropolis, The Lost World, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for most of the twentieth century, science fiction movies were predominantly B movies.

That all changed in 1977 when Star Wars lit the box office on fire. Ever since, science fiction has remained arguably the most profitable genre at the box office. Currently, 14 of the 25 highest-grossing movies of all time are science fiction movies. However, despite the immense popularity of the science fiction genre, many iconic sci-fi films continue to fly under the radar and have been forgotten by modern audiences. Each film included in this article has under 100,000 ratings on Letterboxd.

Canadian Directors Guy Maddin and Matthew Rankin Bond Over Susan Sarandon’s Stolen Earrings, the Marx Brothers, and Winnipeg
Image
Two Winnipeg filmmakers gathered in Toronto last week to discuss their latest works and their relationship to their hometown and its anti-mainstream film scene. Matthew Rankin, whose “Universal Language” now represents Canada in the Best International Feature Film Oscar race, was joined by Canadian auteur Guy Maddin at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival for a dialogue about their filmmaking.

Guy Maddin co-directed the 2024 film “Rumours” with Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, and the political satire has played festivals far and wide, from Cannes to TIFF. Rankin won the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes for his absurdist triptych comedy that riffs on Wes Anderson while homaging Abbas Kiarostami. Rankin’s Oscilloscope release (out early next year) connects three seemingly unrelated stories about people in Winnipeg whose ordinary lives take a surreal turn.

Both Maddin and Rankin shared in their desire not to be pigeonholed into genre. Though Rankin is only...

Image
Updated: While the calendar has clicked over to September, summer vibes are still being felt at the global and international box office. In yet another ascent, and on its 12th weekend of release, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now grossed $1.666B+ globally, overtaking 2019’s The Lion King to become the 9th biggest movie ever at the worldwide box office. The cume through Sunday is an estimated $1,666.2M.

Summer has indeed been good to Disney and its brands, and vice-versa. Between Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Dis boasts the two biggest movies of the year and the only billion-dollar grossers so far. Meanwhile, 20th Century’s Alien: Romulus is chomping its way to $300M global.

Sony/Wayfarer’s It Ends with Us is headed towards the same milestone, and Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 has gruved past the $900M global mark.

Box Office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Crosses $600M to Rule Labor Day, ‘Reagan’ in Close Race for No. 3
Image
Labor Day weekend is never a big holiday for moviegoing, as most people mark the end of summer with other activities, and this year is no exception. Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest headline of the four-day weekend as it stays No. 1 in its sixth outing and crosses $600 million domestically, becoming only the 16th film in history to do so, not adjusted for inflation.

The only newcomer landing in the upper reaches of the chart is the indie biopic Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid and based on Paul Kengor’s book The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism. After a better-than-expected Sunday, the film has found itself in a three-way contest with Twisters and It End With Us for either third or four place. The order won’t be determined until final grosses for the four-day holiday weekend are issued Monday.

Distributor Sbd is estimating a four-day opening of $10.07 million,...

Box Office: ‘Inside Out 2’ Delivers Historic $155M U.S. Opening and $295M Globally in Huge Pixar Comeback
Image
Where to begin in describing the emotions that Hollywood and theater owners — not to mention Pixar and its parent company Disney — are likely feeling over the stunning start of Inside Out 2 at the box office. (Hint: Sadness isn’t one of them.)

In a joyous comeback for Pixar, the tentpole opened to a massive $155 million domestically over Father’s Day weekend — well ahead of an expected $90 million — to secure the second-biggest animated launch of all time for a three-day weekend, not adjusted for inflation. It also did historic business overseas, where it opened to a record $140 million for a global total of $295 million, the biggest opening of all time for an animated film in like-for-like markets when accounting for exchange rates.

Fellow Pixar sequel Incredibles 2 is the crown-holder for top animated domestic opening ($182.7 million). That was previously followed by Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie...

Julien’s Auctions Criticized for Selling Fragment From Carole Lombard Plane Crash That Killed Her: ‘Despicable, Horrible, Macabre’
Carole Lombard circa 1933
Julien’s Auctions, the Beverly Hills-based company that specializes in movie memorabilia, drew sharp criticism on Friday for listing a fragment for sale from the plane crash that killed actress Carole Lombard in 1942.

The item is offered as part of the “Danger, Disaster and Disco” lot, which runs from June 12-14 and is cosponsored by Turner Classic Movies. The starting bid is $250, with the piece of wreckage valued at between $1,000 and $2,000.

Film historian Olympia Kiriakou tweeted, “It’s quite despicable that @JuliensAuctions is selling a piece of mangled plane debris from the crash that killed Carole Lombard.”

Her tweet was shared by X user Frank Wells, who wrote, “I’m trying to figure what kind of ghoul would want this in their home, certainly not an actual Carole Lombard fan. And do what with it? Display? Trot it out at parties? ‘Hey, check this out….'”

One X user called the auction “horrible and macabre,...

Awards ceremonies are beginning to take notice of this unique approach to filmmaking. Throughout the studio's history, it has been nominated for fifty-five Academy Awards and taken home sixteen of those. However, some of its best movies were simply nominated rather than winning the coveted award. Let's take a look at the best movies of A24 that have been recognized by the Academy Awards.

Great news, “Predator” fans: a new pic in the franchise is on the way. And no, it’s not “Prey 2,” although that’s still very much in development. Deadline reports that 20th Century has greenlit “Badlands,” a new standalone tale in the franchise, with “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg returning to direct. And Patrick Aison, who wrote “Prey,” also returns for the new sequel, with he and Trachtenberg working on the story of “Badlands” together.

Dan Trachtenberg To Direct New Standalone ‘Predator’ Movie ‘Badlands’ As 20th Century Expands On Universe
Image
Following the massive success of the Predator pic, Prey, 20th Century is moving forward with the next film as Deadline is hearing Dan Trachtenberg is returning to write and direct Badlands, a new standalone pic in the franchise that is expected to shoot later this year. The film is a high priority for the studio and sources say Trachtenberg and execs are already meeting with talent for the lead role. Trachtenberg co-wrote script with Patrick Aison.

20th Century had no comment.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, other than it will feature everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial big game hunter. It is also not known about release plans as the last film exclusively streamed on Hulu (breaking numerous viewerships records for the streamer) but given that 20th Century has been very much back in the theatrical game with films like Boogeyman and the upcoming Alien: Romulus film bowing in theaters,...

Mason Thames
The Black Phone 2: Joe Hill suspected The Grabber would return as soon as he saw the mask
Mason Thames
Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2.

The Black Phone 2: Ethan Hawke and several Black Phone co-stars are returning for the sequel
Image
Last month, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Now Deadline has broken the news that Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber in the sequel – and he’s joined in the cast by several of his co-stars from The Black Phone! Also returning for this one are Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie.

Details on the plot and exactly what the characters will be doing this time around are being kept under wraps.

Tom Hardy's Motorcycle Movie The Bikeriders Falls Victim to Actors' Strike
Image
While the WGA strike is thankfully over, the SAG-AFTRA strike is still ongoing, and it has just claimed its latest high-profile victim. Jeff Nichols' The Bikeriders, which stars Tom Hardy, Austin Butler and Jodie Comer, has been delayed from its December release date as the SAG strike continues to drag on with no immediate end in sight.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, New Regency has decided to vacate the film's Dec. 1 release date because the ongoing strike prevents the movie's actors from doing any promotion. With names such as Hardy, Butler, Comer, and Walking Dead favorite Norman Reedus among its cast, it makes sense that they would want them all potentially available to give the film a fighting chance at the box office. The good news is, despite not announcing a new date yet, New Regency still wants to release it by the end of 2023 so it qualifies for this year's awards season.

Here’s Why Leonardo DiCaprio Turned Down the Starring Role in Hocus Pocus
Image
Actors have been turning down leading roles, for one reason or another, since the beginning of the movie business. In most of these cases of role rejection, the eventual choice for leading man or woman seems irrefutable. Tom Hanks is Forrest Gump. Titanic wouldn't be nearly as watchable without Kate Winslet as Rose. Anyone other than Al Pacino as Michael Corleone? Forget about it. Still, with the benefit of hindsight, it's fun to imagine what could have been, like John Travolta being the one to say "life is like a box of chocolates," or Gwyneth Paltrow clinging onto the door, or Jack Nicholson making someone an offer they couldn't refuse. Here's another one for you: what if Leonardo DiCaprio had been the one to light the black flame candle?

Sure, the 1993 Disney film Hocus Pocus may not be on the iconic level of the previously-mentioned movies, and yes, Omri Katz...

2024 Oscars: Best Costume Design Predictions
Image
If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)

By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,” 2019 winner “Black Panther” and its...

Greta Gerwig Reveals the 29 Films That Inspired Her Barbie Adaptation
Image
Greta Gerwig, director of the highly anticipated Barbie film, reveals the influences, inspirations, and references she used in her creation.

In an interview with Letterboxd, Gerwig shared a watch list of 29 must-see films integral to her shaping of the Barbie world. The films spanned genres and decades and revealed a broad palette of influences on everything from set design to tone. Gerwig described the Barbie film as a "movie driven by music, but not a musical," much in line with John Badham's 1977 film Saturday Night Fever, a key inspiration. However, this did not stop the Academy Award-winning director from including ten musicals on her list: Grease (1978), Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935), Oklahoma! (1955), All That Jazz (1979), The Red Shoes (1948), Singin' in the Rain (1952), An American in Paris (1951), The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), and The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Drew Barrymore Clarifies She "Never Said" She Wished Her Mother Was Dead in Instagram Video
Since she first appeared in "E.T." when she was just 7 years old, Drew Barrymore has been a beloved fixture in the entertainment industry. Films like "Never Been Kissed" and "Charlie's Angels" solidified her star power, and she's started a new chapter as the host of "The Drew Barrymore Show," which kicked off in September 2020.

Over the years, Drew's candid, vulnerable conversation style has helped her interviews stand out on her talk show. She's been able to connect with people like Brooke Shields about the sexualization they both faced as child stars, and in particular, Drew's openness about the struggles she faced with her parents during her youth has allowed her to bond with stars with similar backgrounds, like Jennette McCurdy.

Drew was raised by actors John Drew Barrymore and Ildiko Jaid Mako Barrymore, but she's been clear about how absent and unreliable they were during her childhood. She became emancipated...

Howard Hawks movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Howard Hawks was the Oscar-nominated director who has become a favorite among cinephiles, praised as a master of genre entertainments. But how many of his titles have remained classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Hawks’ greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1896, Hawks had a background in engineering and aviation before turning to filmmaking during the silent era. He proved himself to be a versatile talent, adapting his direct, fast-paced style to a variety of genres, including comedies, westerns, film noir, adventures (“Only Angels Have Wings”), gangster epics (“Scarface”) and war dramas.

Although Hawks often explored the codes of masculinity in films starring Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and Cary Grant, he was noted for his strong-willed, fast talking female characters, coined the “Hawksian woman.” The battle of the sexes was never more evenhanded than it was in one of his films, thanks to the likes of Katharine Hepburn,...

Carole Lombard Was The Best Actor Ever
Image
When Twa Flight 3, a twin-engine DC-3 concluding its cross-country route from Indiana to Burbank, California, slammed into Potosi Mountain just outside of Las Vegas in the early evening of January 16, 1942, the movies lost its greatest screwball comedienne.

Carole Lombard was 33 years old, and had just weathered a run of tepidly received dramas to reclaim her stature as one of Hollywood's most dependably hilarious performers via Alfred Hitchcock's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." She was about to receive another round of critical acclaim for her turn as the Polish theater diva Maria Tura in Ernst Lubitsch's masterful "To Be or Not to Be." She was married to Rhett Butler himself, Clark Gable, and had committed herself to the war effort (she'd been in her home state of Indiana to host a war bond rally). Lombard was as beloved and consequential an actor as there was in the industry, and, just like that,...

‘Scream VI’ Keeps Box Office Rolling With $44.5 Million Opening
Dermot Mulroney, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Tony Revolori, Liana Liberato, Josh Segarra, Mason Gooding, Samara Weaving, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jack Champion, and Devyn Nekoda in Scream VI (2023)
Another high profile sequel has turned in a solid opening weekend at the box office as Paramount/Spyglass’ “Scream VI” has scored a $44.5 million domestic launch this weekend from 3,675 theaters.

The last “Scream” film, which opened to $30 million, kicked off a 2022 that was Paramount’s best box office year since 2011. While that great year ended on a rough note with Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” flopping, “Scream VI” now has Paramount back on a roll as it hopes to continue that in a few weeks with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which gets a premiere at SXSW this week ahead of a release on March 30.

“Scream” first hit theaters back in the 1990s, and it has been Millennial and Gen Z audiences that have driven turnout for “Scream VI,” with 63% of the opening weekend audience being from the 18-35 demo. The presence of Jenna Ortega, who appeared in the last...

Declared brain dead several days ago, following her Aug. 5 fiery car crash in Los Angeles, Heche had been left on a ventilator with her heart beating so she could be evaluated for organ donation. Multiple organs were scheduled to be recovered on Sunday.

Anne Heche dies at 53, family says 'we have lost a bright light'
Image
US actress Anne Heche is dead but will remain on life support to allow for a possible organ donation, her representative has said. The 53-year-old had been in a coma for a week after crashing her car into a house in Los Angeles, reports the BBC.

“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul,” her family said in a statement on Friday.

Heche appeared in films including ‘Volcano’, ‘Donnie Brasco’ and the 1998 remake of ‘Psycho’.

The mother-of-two also appeared on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2020.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (Lafd), Heche’s vehicle “erupted in heavy fire”, which took 59 firefighters more than an hour to fully extinguish. The two-storey home she crashed into was left “uninhabitable”.

As well as suffering burns, the actress was left with “a severe anoxic brain injury”, when the brain is deprived of oxygen, the BBC quoted her family as saying.

Anne Heche
Anne Heche, star of “Six Days, Seven Nights” and an early LGBT role model for openly dating TV host Ellen DeGeneres in the 1990s, has died from injuries she sustained in a horrific car crash a week before. She was 53.

Her death was first noted Friday by friend Nancy Davis, who posted a tribute on Instagram. TMZ later reported that she was brain-dead, which is legally considered dead in California. A rep for Heche confirmed to TheWrap that she had no brain function Friday, but had no update as to whether she was still on life support.

Before she was formally declared dead, her representatives said in a statement released Thursday that the actress was unlikely to survive due to severe brain injuries. With her heart still beating, she was kept on life support for several hours after that diagnosis, while doctors determined if any of her organs were viable...
