- Mother Hallam: [Victor has left the house against his mother's wishes] Victor! Come back here!
- [she swoons]
- Pop Hallam: Don't bother to faint, Mom, he can't see you.
- Mother Hallam: [suddenly alert, and very irritated] Shut up!
- Stella 'Stell' Hallam: I've given up trying to figure out what your family thinks, Vicky. They just speak another language. I know this though: that I don't care any more what they think.
- Victor Hallam: Well, I care.
- Stella 'Stell' Hallam: You've always cared.
- Victor Hallam: When it comes right down to it, my family have a sense of values that's pretty sane and level-headed.
- Stella 'Stell' Hallam: Yes, I know it.
- Victor Hallam: You know it, but you don't believe it. Is that it?
- Stella 'Stell' Hallam: I do believe it, Vicky. And I believe also that all the Hallams in all the world are always right. They're so sure they know what you are - till after awhile they almost make you believe you're what they think you are. And then heaven help you - if you're not strong enough to help yourself.
- Victor Hallam: Stella, you're all upset over nothing. I don't see what you're driving at.
- Stella 'Stell' Hallam: There's so much you don't see, Vicky, that it almost breaks my heart.
- [last lines]
- Stella 'Stell' Hallam: [Stella turns around to see that Victor has followed her out into the rain] Oh, Vicky. I'm afraid you'll have to get me a taxi.
- Victor Hallam: What for? I thought you liked to walk in the rain. I do.
- [she takes his arm, and they walk off together in the pouring rain]
- Umbrella Peddler: [faintly at first, then louder as Victor and Stell get closer] Umbrellas! Buy umbrellas! Fifty cents umbrellas! Umbrellas! Buy umbrellas! Umbrellas! Fifty cents umbrellas! Umbrellas! Buy umbrellas! Fifty cents umbrellas! Umbrellas! Fifty cents umbrellas! Umbrellas!
- [as they reach the peddler, Victor smiles and shrugs, and hands the peddler a bill. She hands him an umbrella, but he doesn't open it. Without waiting for his change, he tucks it under his arm, and they walk away, getting soaked]
- Umbrella Peddler: [dumbfounded at the big tip, the peddler pauses, but only for a moment] Umbrellas! Fifty cents umbrellas! Umbrellas!
