This was 1932, the last year of the Hoover administration ("Senator" Randolph was expecting a letter from "Herbert"). Prohibition was on its last legs, and the party-goers at the lake house were thrilled to have a chance to drink "bottled in bond", or legitimate whiskey, instead of cheap bathtub liquor which was all that was available at the time to most people.
