When Mrs Martin leaves Euston Station, the taxi passes through the famous Euston Arch. This was constructed of stone in 1837 by the London and Birmingham Railway but was demolished in 1962 when the station was rebuilt. The imminent loss of the arch sparked an intense but ultimately unsuccessful campaign to save it. The discovery in 1994 of substantial parts of the arch, buried in the bed of the River Lea, inspired hope that it could be re-constructed as part of a future redevelopment of Euston Station. A memento of the arch can be found on the Victoria Line platforms at Euston Underground Station where alcoves are decorated with a motif of the arch in red and black tiles.
