Cute, Charming Early 30s Anny Ondra Musical
lchadbou-326-2659222 February 2021
The talented Czech actress Anny Ondra is best known to English speaking audiences as the heroine of Hitchcock's first talkie Blackmail but here is a pleasant musical comedy she made in the early 30s in both a French and a German version, a remake of her silent comedy about two girls who exchange identities, the remake I saw certainly benefits from the addition of musical numbers. The standout songs are Auf Wiedersehen Baby and Ich Lieb Dich which are reprised. Director Lamac also of Czech extraction doesn't rely too much on dialogue but makes a rather visual film with some nice use of camera movement. Ondra's best scene is when she dresses as a boy so as to sneak into a men's club, gets tipsy and performs to the accordion. Strong supporting performances by Emilia Unda as the strict leader of the girls tour group and Margarete Kupfer as the mother of Baby's friend.
