Universal, lacking its own theater chain, devised a 3-tiered feature branding system that helped it market its product to independent theater owners: Red Feather (low-budget programmers), Bluebird (mainstream releases) and Jewel (prestige pictures produced to command higher roadshow ticket prices). Universal would end this marketing tactic in late 1929.
