‘The Witch Queen’ in The Last Witch Hunter.
The Witch: I’m not a witch, I’m not a witch!
Sir Bedevere: But you are dressed as one!
The Witch: *They* dressed me up like this!
Crowd: We didn’t! We didn’t…
The Witch: And this isn’t my nose. It’s a false one.
Sir Bedevere: [lifts up her false nose] Well?
Peasant 1: Well, we did do the nose.
Sir Bedevere: The nose?
Peasant 1: And the hat, but she is a witch!
Crowd: Yeah! Burn her! Burn her!
– Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Throughout history, witches have always gotten a bad rap. The Salem Witch Trials proved that.
Things didn’t improve with the birth of cinema. Filmmakers have had a magical time telling the tales of sorcery, magical powers and witchcraft.
Good or bad, funny or downright scary, their stories have fascinated moviegoers and these burnt offerings show no signs of slowing down.

Back in November, I visited the set of “The Last Witch Hunter” with several fellow entertainment journalists. Justin Rawlins of Fractured Effects was on hand to walk us through the extensive — and confidential — book of concept art and how his team helped translate dreams into reality. Because for all the leaps and bounds of CGI effects, sometimes you just need to put an actress in five hours of make-up and let her loose on the set. How much of the concept art it the product of your studio, Fractured Effects? Justin Rawlins: A lot of this art was Breck's artist who had designs by the time I came into it. He had some rough versions of what the witches would look like. When I first started meeting with him [Breck] basically had a wall of what not to do. It was all these different witches you've seen throughout movies. He didn't...

If I only had a brain, I would have asked for The Wizard Of Oz: 70Th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner, $69.92) three months before it premiered on DVD last Tuesday instead of three days before. But, like the Cowardly Lion, I lack courage, and couldn’t muster the resolve to ask Warner Home Video for this stellar (and extras-packed) four-disc set so far in advance. (And remember: I Have watched Everything on this whole set! Really!)
