The Lost Chaplin / Normand Film
PamelaShort16 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a lost Keystone Film Company short that featured Mabel Normand and Charlie Chaplin. The only synopsis I could find is very brief, but sounds like the typical Keystone comedy storyline. Chaplin plays a bandit who captures Count De Beans ( Charles Murray ) and impersonates him at a fancy high class party at the home of Miss De Rock ( Mabel Normand ). The usual crude social blunders and catastrophes transpire from the antics of the bandit ( Charlie Chaplin ) before the police arrive.

This is the only completed and released Charlie Chaplin film that is not believed to exist in any form. Furthermore, there is an element of doubt about this film, whether Her Friend the Bandit can truly be considered a Charlie Chaplin film. It could have been another Mabel Normand vehicle in which he was involved. The film's absence from various older filmographies, including one drawn up by Chaplin himself, and the specific fact that Chaplin's name does not appear to be mentioned in many contemporary reviews has added confusion over the provenance of this short. Hopefully a copy resurfaces someday to complete Chaplin's filmography.

Safe, rather than noteworthy

Charles Chaplain and Charles Murray play the chief funny characters of this farce which is a bit thin, but has the rough whirling of happenings usually found in farces of this well-marked type. It will amuse and make laughter and can be considered a safe, rather than noteworthy offering. - The Moving Picture World, July 4, 1914
