- A young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

- Disillusioned with his marriage which has ended in divorce, Petr Leroy goes off to the Riviera to the place where he first met his wife and where he hopes to be spiritually revived. Here he meets his friend Jan and together they enjoy the joys the Riviera has to offer. Jan meets a charming girl at the casino and he takes her off into the mountains. On his return he speaks of the beautiful Olga with whom he has spent a wonderful three days. Olga, however, does not appear for a meeting they had arranged, so Jan goes to look for her in the mountains. Then he sees her in a village and tries to catch up with her in his car. He has an accident. Olga takes him to the nearest sanatorium where everyone behaves very strangely to the newly-arrived patient.
- The illegitimate child, Marie Ruzová, grows up in the family of the miller Borický. She spends her childhood and youth with Borický's son, Klement. Klement studies law, becomes a lawyer and is to marry Jirinka. Her mother, however, fears Klement's relationship with Marie and threatens the Borickýs that she will not give her Jirinka to Klement as a wife. In order not to cause further contradictions, Marie secretly leaves for Prague at night. There she earns a hard living as a waitress.
- A Venetian gondolier looks for his beloved, who a Czech count had taken away and then rejected.Meanwhile the gondolier finds a boy among a group of gypsies in Bohemia and the two become wandering musicians.
