- In the 1840s, Lübeck is a dominating commercial town on the Baltic coast, and the Buddenbrooks are among the town's first families. The Jansen-Balzers move from Cologne to Berlin. Mother Marit and her husband Jonas are looking forward to a new beginning, as are their children Selma and Luis.
