- Hearing his brother and only surviving fellow Minnifeld died, Maurice looks for a 'son' to adopt. After Joel declines, he gets Chris to try, but although generosity gets them through the hard stuff, a game of croquet proves you can't adopt 'breeding'. When Ed tells Holling Jesse that the fiercest grizzly, who caused him to stop hunting anything else, is back, Shelly insists on joining them on a hunt which shows that although the men are older, the bear still knows them. Joel is asked to attend a hygiene class, but when he arrives learns it's for expectant mothers, which Maggie makes him improvise.

Chris is delighted his instinctive sculptural inspiration fits the astronomical phenomenon Aurora Borealis (northern light). Chris accepts help from lost motor-biker Bernard, and discovers they share a lot, even an identity essential.
- Shelley faces the reality she'll soon be a mother. Ed has a Hollywood agent scout him. Maggie throws Shelley a baby shower.
- Cicely is in a mixed-doubles bowling tournament and Michelle is their star bowler. Chris finally realizes he's romantically interested in Maggie and she seems to reciprocate the feeling. Michelle leaves Phil and moves into the Brick.
- Family matters come to the forefront when Joel's parents, Nadine and Herb, visit. Nadine finds a unique connection with Marilyn and the eagles. Meanwhile Shelly is concerned that Holling will miss out on special father-son moments with their new baby after he announces that he's bored with sports.
- Cicely has a blood drive which Maurice turns into a competition and a running bet. Maggie's old beau Jed comes for a visit. Ed hires a P.I. to help find out if a woman in town is his birth mother.

Ed Chigliak's suave way gets reluctant Joel to make confusing house-calls on Ed's uncle, paradoxical medicine man Anku, who treats Joel to a Kentucky takeaway, traditional dancing and a sauna but refuses to be treated for his fatal cancer.
- Maggie's mother comes for a visit and delivers some surprising news. Chris builds a catapult. Joel discovers someone's secret identity.
- Michelle decides to put on the play, Bus Stop, but is running into problems: Ron bribes her to cast Erick in a role; Holling gets drunk during rehearsals; Chris cannot kiss Maggie and Shelly is jealous of not getting the lead female role.
- Joel encounters a 108-year-old man who has come home to Cicely. He tells Joel that Cicely, founded by two incredible, free-thinking women named Roslyn and Cicely, was once considered the "Paris of the North". The series regulars appear in this episode as various residents from 1909.
- The law catches up with Chris when the authorities begin setting up an extraction to have him turned in to the West Virginia police for violating parole.
- Chris tries to get a pilot license. Ed discovers an old diary and learns an disturbing fact. Marilyn acts as a sleuth.
- In an effort to sell more issues of his newspaper, Maurice hires pathological liar Adam to write for it.
- When a new candidate signs up for the upcoming mayoral election in Cicely, this triggers a large amount of activity among the residents.
- In an alternate reality, Fleishman is married to Shelly, Maggie is his nanny, Ruth Ann is a prominent physician whom he seeks partnership with, Chris tries to jump off a building and Maurice walks into their dinner party gun in hand.
- A semi-retired KGB agent arrives in Cicely and reveals to Maurice that he once divulged some classified information. Holling finds a great nuisance in a health-care inspector who gives him some instructions to clean The Brick.

- Ed's spirit guide returns claiming to have found the identity of Ed's father. Maggie and Mike grow closer. An itinerant, blind piano tuner shows up at the Brick.
