      1. Ron Ely

      • Actor
      • Director
      • Soundtrack
      Tarzan (1966–1968)
The 15th screen Tarzan (if you don't count Gordon Griffith) was to have played a Tarzan impersonator in a projected Mike Henry television show, which never materialized. He had been tested fourteen months earlier when Henry got the part. Prior to Tarzan, Ron had numerous parts in movies and television, including the copilot in South Pacific (1958) and had co-starred in TV's brief series "Malibu Run" (The Aquanauts (1960)). He played the title role in the TV series Tarzan (1966), and in two movies made from that series in 1970. He refused to use a stunt double in his vine-swinging or animal fights and was often injured. It has been noted that Ron's physical appearance and dialogue were much more like those of Edgar Rice Burroughs' character than could be said for any other Tarzan. In addition to occasional parts in TV series and movies, several made in Germany, Ron hosted the "Miss America" pageant on television 1979-81, replacing Bert Parks.

    • Larissa Ely in Cherry, Harry & Raquel! (1969)

      8. Larissa Ely

      • Actress
      Cherry, Harry & Raquel! (1969)
Larissa Ely studied acting in Hollywood, California in 1970 with both Jack Waltzer and Charles Conrad.

She was the acting "partner" of Tex Allen, SAG Actor, in 1970, in Charles Conrad's Actor Classes. Charles Eric Conrad used an acting teaching technique in which male and female partners of roughly the same age would be assigned to perform fragments of stage plays before the entire actor class of about 20 actors. Each couple would have a chance to present a prepared scene assigned by Charles Conrad, and Conrad would critique the prepared scene (e.g. from then recent plays such as "Lovers And Other Strangers" [1969] stage play which also became a famous movie produced in 1970). The partnered actor-students would meet outside of the classroom prior to the scheduled classroom presentation, and rehearse/ practice the scene fragment (usually lasting about 5 minutes total) in order to get the lines, agree on the manner of presentation, and become comfortable acting with each other. Partners often remained paired for repeated scenes over the course of the class (for which Charles Eric Conrad charged $40 per month for once weekly 3 hour classroom meetings always held in the early evenings at his studio in Hollywood, California).

At the time, Jeff Corey and Charles Conrad (who had come from NYC where he had been Sandy Meizner's "Neightborhood Playhouse" chief assistant) were the two main and most prestigious acting teachers based Hollywood (NYC teachers of fame such as Stella Adler would provide one day workshops each year in Hollywood, but were not based there...just visiting).

Larissa Ely (later changed her name to "Larissa Cartier") was a gifted actress and quite ambitious to learn actor work from many teachers. She had natural charisma which resulted in Russ Meyer selecting her for his famous 1970 feature movie in which Larissa Ely got star billing.

Larissa Ely was quite beautiful to see and behold, and was a voluptuous, "blooming" young adult woman well suited to the "sexual revolution" theme movies produced frequently in the late 1960's and early 1970's when the "sexual revolution" was an important part of the "counter culture revolution" then popular and trendy, but which ended by the middle 1970's.

        Tin Cup (1996)
Joe Ely is a son of the South Plains, born on February 9, 1947 in Lubbock, Texas. As a teen he practiced with a small country band in (what was unknown to him at the time) had been the childhood home of rock and roll co-founder and Lubbock native Buddy Holly. He was and continues to be a member of The Flatlanders, which he co-founded with prolific songwriter Butch Hancock and musician / actor Jimmie Dale Gilmore (best known as "Smokey" in The Big Lebowski (1998) ). He is best known as the leader of the long-lived Joe Ely Band which, among others, included Lloyd Maines, Jesse Taylor and Ponty Bone. The band enjoyed a great deal of commercial success in the late seventies and eighties, primarily with the MCA label.

He and guitarist Jesse Taylor were responsible for establishing the weekly Stubbs Barbeque Jam at a tiny restaurant in Lubbock, which became the regional hot spot for live blues, having such an impact that the grounds of the long-since razed restaurant is now the site of a historical monument.

Much of his work is autobiographical, including one early track which told the story of his working for a traveling carnival that survived a hurricane. His long-time guitar has been a 1950s Gibson J-5 that he bought on a beach in California. It bears large circular rings on the front from sea shells that had been glued-on by the previous owner. Only having $5 of the promised $10, the seller kept the shells. In the late 1970s, when country singer Tom T. Hall was at his peak, Hall, Ely and a few others enjoyed a drunken game of billiards in the back of Stubbs Barbeque, with Ely having chalked his nose green and continuing the game using a broomstick and an onion pulled from a bag in the corner. The resulted in Hall's song, "The Great East Broadway Onion Championship of 1978".

Ely is one of the vanishing breed of genuine salt-of-the-earth working musicians who has kept at it all his life, through thick and thin, enjoying both fame and famine, yet never giving in. His version of Texas music never caught as much sail as the central Texas "outlaw" genre of Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, or of the pop style of fellow Lubbock Native Mac Davis, in west Texas he is best respected musicians of his generation.
