Ellis Edwin Toney, the eldest child of Winifred and Dr. Ellis Toney Sr., was born on August 18, 1950 in Los Angeles, California.
He attended Virginia Rd. and 39th St. Elementary Schools, Audubon Jr. High and Hamilton High School. In the late 60s at the age of 18, Ellis began what would grow into a 37-year career in the entertainment industry. Starting out as a page at the NBC television studio, Ellis worked his way up through the ranks and went on to stage manage many of the highest rated television shows, sports, and news broadcasts of the day.
Some of his achievements include: The Summer Olympic Games, The Academy Awards, The Grammy Awards, The Emmy Awards, The Pasadena Rose Parade, Good Morning America, The National Democratic Convention, The CBS Evening News, World News Tonight, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Flip Wilson Show, Sonny and Cher, All in the Family, The Cosby Show, Soul Train, The Jefferson's, Jeopardy, Let's Make a Deal, The Young and the Restless, and countless others too numerous to mention.
As a seasoned veteran in the "Biz," Ellis was never too busy to mentor or pass on the tricks of the trade to aspiring young coworkers. Although actively engaged in his career up until the time of his premature passing, Ellis was looking forward to retirement and moving to Spain, when he died after a short illness on September 28, 2005.
He is survived by his mother Winifred Toney, sister Sheryl Toney Lorenzo, his aunts Gloria Petrie and Meriel Williams of Seattle, Washington, cousin Gloria Hill, countless friends, coworkers and admirers. Ellis will be sorely missed.- Actor
