- Erwin Wegner was born on April 5, 1909 in Poland. Wegner won a silver medal in the men's 110m hurdles at the 1934 European Championships. Moreover, Erwin represented Germany in the 110m hurdles at the 1932 and 1936 Olympics, but was eliminated in the semifinals both times. In addition, Wegner finished in ninth place in the decathlon at the 1932 Olympics. Erwin was German champion in the high hurdles for the years 1932, 1933, 1935 (his German record of fourteen minutes and five seconds in this particular year stood for twenty years), and 1937. Wegner was also a trained teacher and coach at the DHFL Berlin who held a doctorate in physical education. An SS officer, Erwin was killed in action in the last months of World War II in France on February 16, 1945.
