Father - Georgiy Gazzaev (1920-1983), a native of Tskhinval, worked in the militia and was engaged in freestyle wrestling; after an accident that resulted in serious injuries, he was forced to leave his service and get a job as a bricklayer. Valeriy spent his childhood in the Vladikavkaz district of Turkhana. He graduated from secondary school No.15 in Ordzhonikidze. He got into the football school of the Spartak club from the yard team; his first coach was Musa Tsalikov. From his time at school until the end of his career, Gazzaev played exclusively as a striker. To strengthen physical strength and develop individual skills, Gazzaev also participated in athletics, basketball and volleyball.
Gazzaev won his first serious victory together with the team: as part of the children's competition "Leather Ball", their team won the championship of the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and Gazzaev became the top scorer of the tournament.
In 1970 he began playing for Spartak (Ordzhonikidze). In the spring of 1971, Gazzaev was going to leave big football after, as a player at the Youth Sports School, he did not get into the double team of the Ossetian Spartak. He even entered the agronomy department of the Agricultural Institute, but the team coach Sergey Korshunov added Gazzaev to the team. Gazzaev scored his debut goal in the match against his peers from the Ivanovo "Tekstilshchik", also earning a penalty.
On May 13, 1971, Gazzaev played his first match with Spartak. At the control match of the USSR youth team with the "double" of the Moscow "Dynamo", Gazzaev, who scored three goals, drew the attention of the Moscow "Spartak", who sent on behalf of Nikolay Starostin and Nikita Simonian an offer for Gazzaev to join the ranks of the "red-white", but under pressure relatives and friends Gazzaev was forced to refuse this transition.
In 1974, Gazzaev was invited to Rostov SKA. A year later, the management of Spartak from Ordzhonikidze achieved the return of Gazzaev. In the 1975 season, Gazzaev played 33 out of 38 matches, becoming the team's top scorer.
In 1976-1978 he played for Lokomotiv (Moscow). According to the results of the autumn USSR championship of 1976, Lokomotiv took 6th place, the next season the team began to play much worse. In 1977, after Lokomotiv's tour of Turkey, the Fenerbahçe club became seriously interested in Gazzaev and even sent a delegation to him, offering him a colossal sum in exchange for a move to the Turkish team, but Gazzaev refused their proposals.
