An Indian movie with a message.
The Indian film Taare Zameen Par was shown in the U.S. with the title Like Stars on Earth (2007). The movie was directed by Aamir Khan, who is also the costar.
The movie certainly isn't a typical Bollywood film. It's a serious movie about dyslexia. That's the condition that plagues the film's protagonist, Ishaan.
Director Khan plays a young teacher, who understands dyslexia. (The famous Indian film star Tisca Chopra plays Ishaan's loving mother.)
However, in a movie about a young boy who suffers from a disability, the work of that boy is what counts. Darsheel Safary portrays Ishaan perfectly. He's already a well known Indian actor, and he is really talented. This movie works or doesn't work depending on the skill of the protagonist. No problem here--Safary is great.
Although the actors speak English, I think the movie is primarily made for an Indian audience. It's hard to believe that no educator in the movie ever notices that Ishaan is reversing his letters and confusing his numbers. However, parents watching the film might be astonished to recognize the same condition that plagues their own child. The film could be useful in that respect.
We saw the movie on the small screen, where it worked well. Most Bollywood films really do better in a theater, but not so much for this one.
Like Stars on Earth has an extraordinary high IMDb rating of 8.4. I thought it was good, but not quite that good. I rated it 8.
