4 out of 5 stars.
Resident Evil 2 is a great well done remake to the original game. I am a huge fan of the Resident Evil series and loved the second game. This remake delivers. The story is almost the same. Playing both characters Leon and Claire, every detail is identical to the original. There may be a little new addition of sub plot detail added to the mix. Claire's storyline dealing with Chief Irons and Sherry. Nothing was ever disappointing.
The gameplay is more flexible than the original game. Which was a great improvement. From camera angles to character movement. With an easy handle on the controls and characters. It makes the game play so much more fun than the original. The game has several new puzzles. The setting taking place in a Raccoon City police station is identical to the original which was amazing. Plus the underground parking garage to the side streets of Raccoon City and the sewers. The sewer setting was not that impressive and seemed a little boring. The umbrella underground laboratory was impressive.
The graphics is amazing. The setting, characters, and cutscenes delivered with a lifelike graphics. The game does have a few jump scares which will have you running with adrenaline trying to escape from the enemy. A few things jump out of nowhere. Plus being nervous to walk around a dark corridor. The game delivered with zombies, zombie dogs, lickers, some undead poison ivy looking things. Plus Mr. X is freaky and will have your adrenaline rushing when he was chasing you room to room. And mutated Birkin is a scary one which you ll see his transformation through his encounters.
The remake does change a few things over the original which will throw you off if you are expecting it to be like the original. Which makes it more fun cause your playing something new. After completing Leons storyline and continuing with Claire in her perspective. One thing that did bother me was there are some moments which you will be redoing the same events again like battling a boss fight the same exact way. Which can be repetitive and I was expecting a different outcome. Leon fighting against Birkin in the end in the same room. While Claire B scenario you are also fighting Birkin in the same room. But there are some extra small new additions after she escapes. It just makes it seem like it is the same storyline than having their own.
The music score is good in the remake. I did like the original game music soundtrack better which delivered the survival horror mood. The remake score did feel a little underwhelming or forgettable.
Overall, Resident Evil 2 is a good survival horror remake. I am glad Capcom redid the second game. Which was one of my favorites. I would love to see another remake to the first original game and even a remake to RE 3 Nemesis which would be awesome. As long as they can keep it scary and horrifying and fun. Just like how the original trilogy of RE games are.
