Detroit: Become Human (2018 Video Game)
1/10
Should've been just Hank and Connor

WARNING: Possibly the only rational and honest review

Negatives:

The game's full of poorly-written cliches and features banal events and as basic black & white representation of social events and "issues" as possible.

The Kara and Marcus stories are both terrible and always feature evil white men doing evil things just because. All the featured children were little girls... and you have to "undress" one... That same girl is annoying as all hell, much like Kara's overacting when it comes to protecting her. But I already mentioned cliches, so I won't go into the basic yet overblown mother-daughter relationship portrayed in the game.

Final scene with Marcus giving a speech to a horde of androids was laughable. It was painstakingly obvious only 2-3 of those were actual animated character models, everything else was static white low-poly not-moving models while epic crowd roars and music play as the camera pans around this "epic" scene of not-moving low-poly models. All that effort and you couldn't find a better way to do this scene? Then don't do it.

Positives:

The acting work on Hank was amazing. The whole Hank & Connor storyline was a joy to play and I would've loved it if that was all the game. Clancy Brown really brought something special to this game, made even the obligatory badly written "moral statement" stories interesting to watch (e.g. two female androids loving each other so they killed a white guy cuz why not, also you're bad if you defend yourself and shoot them even considering they tried to kill Hank & Connor first).

The music was incredibly epic albeit nothing groundbreaking. "Epic" and "Original" are two very different things. The general visual stylistic choices made for this game (e.g. each character has their own scene color theme) are a great detail. The storyline branching is insanely open sometimes, which cranks up replay value exponentially.

Verdict

So there you have it, an okay game to watch someone else play on YouTube, but with poorly written storylines full of banal cliches and uneven pacing, mixed with generally unsatisfying payoffs (except for the best Hank & Connor ending) and a whole lot of plot holes - I wouldn't say it's worth buying a PS4 just for this exclusive game. Just get some popcorn and watch someone else play only the Hank & Connor storyline on YouTube or Twitch.

Also watch "I, Robot", which is a movie this game blatantly stole a whole lot from.
