I don't know how you overlook a new Coen brothers movie, even if it's just one Coen doing the directing, but 2024's "Drive-Away Dolls" (aka "Henry James' Drive-Away Dykes") somehow came and went without much of a fuss. To be fair, the darkly comedic yarn about two friends (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) who hit the road with the wrong drive-away car (which happens to have a man's severed head in its trunk) was not showered with the kinds of raves that greet most Coen brothers films. Still, the reviews were mostly positive. A year after its theatrical release, I'm still laughing myself silly over Bill Camp's portrayal of the badly beaten Curlie.
While "Drive-Away Dolls" couldn't muster up much in the way of moviegoer enthusiasm, I've got to think Ethan Coen's latest film, "Honey Don't!", will stir up more than a little interest. As with his last film,...

Writer-director Ethan Coen’s follow-up to 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls – Honey, Don’t – is set to arrive in late summer of this year, it’s been confirmed.
Following the release of Drive-Away Dolls to something of a mixed reception last year, Ethan Coen has once again partnered with Tricia Cooke to collaborate on the next entry in their planned lesbian B-movie trilogy: Honey, Don’t.
The project entered production last March and boasts an enviable leading trio of Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans. Shooting wrapped up in May and over a year later, the film is slated to arrive (in the US at least) with World Of Reel originally stating that Honey, Don’t is slated for a May 2025 release.
That plan has changed now the movie is going to the Cannes Film Festival, though. Instead, it’s set for a US release of 22nd August, and the UK...

Jeff Bridges has had an illustrious career. He's worked with some of Hollywood's greatest directors and has been nominated for seven Academy Awards. However, for many people, he'll always be associated with the 1998 comedy classic, The Big Lebowski, which, if the legendary actor had his way, would be receiving a sequel.
Per Deadline, Bridges attended a screening for The Big Lebowski in Los Angeles and was asked whether he'd be interested in reprising his iconic role of The Dude in a potential sequel. The acclaimed actor would confirm that not only would he be more than willing to return, but that his The Big Lebowski co-star Julianne Moore would as well. "Of course," Bridges said. "Julianne and I would fantasize about that. We did another movie together, Seventh Son, she played a witch in that movie. And we would often say, ‘Gee it’s all set up for a sequel.

Freaky Tales” (2024) is a movie that feels entirely unsuited for what cinema looks like in 2025, and it still would have felt antiquated had it not been held from release after its initial debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. Although this anthology of Oakland crime stories takes place in 1987, its style is unquestionably influenced by the wave of 1990s independent films that used sharp dialogue and twisty storylines to engage in pulp sensibilities; the comparisons to be made with “Reservoir Dogs,” “Boyz n the Hood,” and “Trainspotting” are too innumerable to note.
However, the most glaring factor in “Freaky Tales” is how strange it feels as a theatrical experience. While there have been countless prestige miniseries from buzzy streaming services made in the last few years that could have been edited into much stronger films, “Freaky Tales” is the rare example of a narrative that would have been better suited for the small screen.

Streamer’s endless quest to make an unforgettable blockbuster continues to sputter out with the release of $300m dud The Electric State
The full effect of Netflix on the film industry, positive or (more likely) negative, will be reverberating for years to come. But in the short term, they’ve made some undeniably great movies, mostly through the strategy of giving money to great directors and appearing to let them do whatever they want (and supplementing those by acquiring already-great movies from film festivals). That’s how you wind up with The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Hit Man, Roma, The Power of the Dog, Da 5 Bloods, Rebel Ridge and The Killer, among others.
It’s a lineup that smokes most of the major studios, which was presumably the idea: undercut the competition by stealing the film-makers they established and giving them the world. That particular...

The Interview was one of Seth Rogen and James Franco’s crowning film achievements, which echoed the likes of The Dictator in its presentation and humor. However, truth is stranger than fiction, and if Seth Rogen can take a break from his stints with superheroes like Invincible and The Boys, there is a hot idea waiting for him to pen the sequel of the film.

Greta Gerwig hasn't even begun shooting her new take on C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, but Netflix already views the film as the start of its next big franchise. As well as being one of the few Netflix original movies that has been granted an IMAX release, Gerwig's Narnia could begin Netflix's longest running film franchise so far. The past adaptation of Narnia, titled The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was granted two sequels by Disney (Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader), and managed to adapt three of the seven Chronicles of Narnia novels written by Lewis. But, Netflix apparently wants to take things much further than that.
Per a new report from Deadline, IMAX CEO, Rich Gerlfond has revealed that Netflix wants to stretch its new Chronicles of Narnia movie into an eight-film franchise. Gerlfond dropped the bombshell during IMAX's earning call, and...

The celebrated director, Ron Howard, proves his directorial prowess yet once again through visually compelling storytelling of an almost forgotten fantasy. In the Heart of the Sea, a masterpiece from the Angels & Demons director, will keep you hooked to your screens from the beginning till the end.
It is heartwarming to find out that the all-time classic Moby Dick was based on true accounts of the whaling sea vessel called the Essex that sank. In fact, the Black Doves actor Ben Whishaw who portrayed the author Herman Melville, went to interview the last survivor of the Essex so that he could pen down the legend of rampaging white whale for all of us.

Netflix's new Western series has become a global success. Producing original movies and TV shows since the early 2010s, the streaming service's catalog of Western content now offers a diverse range of stories exploring the rugged charm of the American frontier. Longmire was A&e's highest-rated original drama before Netflix picked it up in 2014, starting with season four, and releasing the sixth and final season in 2017. Around that same time, the Western miniseries Godless was also released on Netflix to rave reviews.
The Coen brothers' Western anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, was released on Netflix in 2018, presenting six separate tales that blend humor and tragedy and showcase the unpredictability of frontier life. The Harder They Fall, released on Netflix in 2021, is one of the few Westerns with a predominantly Black cast, showcasing a diverse narrative and fresh perspective within the genre. Joel Coen is to direct another film solo in 2025, meaning the reunion of Joel and Ethan on a movie is further put back.
After decades of working as a directing duo – a collaboration that stretches all the way back to 1984’s neo-noir, Blood Simple – the last seven years have seen a significant shift in the Coen brothers’ output. They’ve instead opted to make solo projects, with 2018’s The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs currently standing as their last film together.
While it’s been interesting to see each brother pursuing their own projects and see how they function as individual storytellers, when news emerged around a year ago that they would be reuniting to write and direct a ‘pure horror’ story, it was a welcome announcement.
According to a new report (via World Of Reel), it’s possible that we may be waiting a while longer for that project, as...

Miller's Crossing, one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, is an extremely underrated movie created by The Coen Brothers. As one of the best directing duos of all time, The Coen Brothers have directed classic films such as The Big Lebowski, Inside Llewyn Davis, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men. Joel and Ethan Coen have directed a total of 20 films together beginning with the 1984 neo-noir crime film Blood Simple.
Following their feature film debut, the Coen Brothers' sophomore effort was the 1987 crime comedy Raising Arizona, which remains one of Nicolas Cage's most iconic roles. They then went on to direct the showbiz comedy Barton Fink, the satirical comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the black comedy Burn After Reading, and the instant classic Western True Grit. The Coen Brothers' last joint effort was 2018's The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

The Coen brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is one of the greatest westerns of the 21st century — but the movie’s legacy has been reduced to a meme. Released on Netflix in 2018, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an anthology movie showing several very different perspectives of the Old West. It’s named after its opening sequence, in which a joyful singing cowboy played by Tim Blake Nelson is challenged to a gunfight, but the five shorts that follow range from lighthearted comedy to harrowing tragedy.

In today's age of the internet, memes are a language. Knowing the most current memes and being able to use them appropriately counts as eloquence. The appropriateness of a meme obviously depends on the juncture of a conversation in which it is used, usually eliciting laughter from the callback or reference to a memorable instance of pop culture. From movies and celebrity interviews to song lyrics and comic book panels, any audiovisual piece of work can become the source of a meme if a moment from them is consistently referred to across various contexts.
The popularity of a meme can often even have a profound impact on its source material, from generating buzz about a movie by becoming viral to keeping a show relevant, like Friends memes that prove it is still relatable. With six separate stories taking place in the Old West, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs endings each offered something new while all sharing similar themes within Joel and Ethan Coen's Western anthology. The Oscar-winning Coens had previously explored this genre but were able to tell a variety of Western tales here. The movie is separated into six stories, each with its own thought-provoking and brutal ending: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Near Algodones, Meal Ticket, All Gold Canyon, The Gal Who Got Rattled, and The Mortal Remains.

Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann and David Krumholtz have joined the cast of Jeremy Allen White’s Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere.”
Maron will play Chuck Plotkin, the music producer who mastered Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album, turning his unprocessed cassette demos into a high-quality record. Hoffmann will portray Springsteen’s mother, Adele Springsteen, a singer in her own right who died at age 98 earlier this year. Krumholtz will play Al Teller, a record label executive who oversaw the release of “Nebraska.”
From Disney’s 20th Century Studios, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” follows Springsteen during the creation of his 1982 album “Nebraska,” a stripped-down record that marked a creative shift from the anthemic “Born to Run” and “The River.” The movie is currently filming in New Jersey and New York. Although their cinematic sensibilities and characteristics are distinct, analyzing their work can be inscrutable, as the directors are hesitant to reveal the true meaning behind their films. Rather than endlessly glowing about their passions in the press, the Coens' deep admiration for cinema, literature, and music is evident in their films. These influences converge with their unique eye for character and tone to create something wholly indelible. For years, the Coen Brothers have been infusing Western themes and iconography in their work, but it wasn't until 34 years later, with the release of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, that they got to scratch that itch by making an original, tried and true Western with exceptional historical accuracy.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' is one of the best Western movies on Netflix, and the Coen brothers' film that has been praised for its accuracy has managed to complete a 34-year obsession for the directors. The Coen brothers are two of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers of all time, with their filmography spanning a wide variety of genres and tones. While The Ballad of Buster Scruggs may not be as well-known as other Coen brothers movies like The Big Lebowski, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men, it is easily one of their most significant films.

72-year-old Irish actor Liam Neeson is known worldwide for his action roles, notably the Taken saga, where he has to relentlessly save a loved one taken from him by criminals. However, his extensive filmography also includes some dramas, such as his breakout role in Schindler's List, romantic comedies including Love Actually as a recent widower, and even musicals like Les Misrables where he plays soft-at-heart convict Jean Valjean.
What Neeson is less known for, though, is Westerns. Though the multi-faceted actor has dipped his toes in many genres, he's not necessarily known for starring in Westerns, though he has been in a few. Exceptions can be counted on one hand: Seraphim Falls (2006), A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), The Marksman (2021), In the Land of Saints and Sinners...

Tim Blake Nelson recalls the extreme nature of working on Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. Nelson is an actor who is best known for his roles in films such as The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, O Brother, Where Art Thou, and The Incredible Hulk, and he played Richard Schell in Lincoln. The Spielberg movie features a leading cast including Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, and Tommy Lee Jones.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Nelson explains how intense working on Lincoln was. According to Nelson, lead actor Day-Lewis managed to "commit not only himself, but the entire production to a work ethic and to esthetic principles in terms of the process." What this means is that "there were never any anachronisms on set," affecting everything from how people dressed to what they were allowed to bring on set. Check out the full explanation from Nelson...

For almost 40 years, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen – better known as the Coen Brothers – have created a number of quirky, singular titles spanning a variety of genres. They’ve also become industry and academy favorites, picking up four Oscar wins for writing, directing and producing. Celebrate this dynamic duo by taking a look back at all 18 of their films together, ranked worst to best.
The Coens made their feature debut with the Southwestern neo-noir “Blood Simple” (1984). Shot on a shoestring budget with a then largely unknown cast, the film established the brothers’ talent for visually striking, wholly original stories.
They followed their breakout hit with a series of increasingly ambitious, wildly different features: the wacky Southern farce “Raising Arizona” (1987), the moody gangster saga “Millers Crossing” (1990), the bizarre Hollywood satire “Barton Fink” (1991), and the nostalgic screwball comedy “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994).

Almost 16 years since his MCU debut in The Incredible Hulk, Tim Blake Nelson is finally making his way to the big screen as the classic Hulk villain The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World. However, a scrapped sequel to the 2008 film would have had Nelson play the comic book villain opposite Edward Norton's Bruce Banner/Hulk. It was not meant to be, according to the actor. The Incredible Hulk is now a vital part of the near MCU future, with the Captain America sequel starring Anthony Mackie playing a major role in revitalizing its characters.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Tim Blake Nelson reflected on the years since playing the supporting character in The Incredible Hulk in 2008. When a sequel to the film did not get off the ground, the actor felt like his time in the MCU had ended before it really began. Nelson underlines the...

Tim Blake Nelson, the character actors’ character actor, has spent a career adding to a “rogues gallery of dysfunctional weirdos” on film and TV, from the singing convict in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the singing gunslinger in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs — both from the Coen Brothers — to Wade Tillman, a paranoid cop with incredible interrogation skills and a severe case of Ptsd in HBO’s Emmy-winning TV series Watchmen, to the supervillain Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, a role Nelson will reprise, 16 years later, in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
Along the way, Nelson has also gone behind the camera, directing film versions of his plays Eye of God (1997) and The Grey Zone (2001), adapting Shakespeare’s Othello, setting it in a modern-day high school with O (2001), and shooting two of his original screenplays: Kansas (1998) and Leaves of Grass (2009).

Since its premiere on Netflix on September 6, Rebel Ridge has been at the top of the streamer's charts, and for good reason. Westerns were, for a while, a bit of a dying genre. The golden age of the Western occurred years ago, with the work of directors like John Ford and Howard Hawks or actors like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. It seemed that they would disappear as the film industry evolved to focus on more spectacle-oriented movies rather than the tales of tradition vs. modernity that the great Western directors made.
However, in the last twenty years or so, there's been a bit of a resurgence in the Western, and some of the best entries to the genre as a whole have been released. Liam Neeson emerged as an unlikely Hollywood action hero after his hit performance as Bryan Mills in the 2007 revenge thriller Taken. Though Neeson had earned a name as a respected actor through films like Schindler's List, Michael Collins, and Kingdom of Heaven, Taken changed his career path in the direction of the action and thriller genre. Ever since, he's been known as one of Hollywood's greatest tough-guy action heroes, which has defined most of his biggest roles to date.
Liam Neeson continues to perform well in different genres and has proven himself a talented deadpan comedy actor. His performances since Taken have continued his reputation as a fan-favorite actor of the last decade, and his presence on the big screen has elevated some mediocre stories. Neeson has more than maintained his reputation as a brilliant actor, from action and comedy to period dramas and thrillers.

The Coen Brothers' classic film, No Country for Old Men, will drop on Paramount+ on Sept. 1. Based on Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men follows Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who discovers $2 million in cash enclosed in a briefcase in the Texas desert. The decision to take the money ultimately becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse, as cold-blooded hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is in pursuit of Moss and will do anything to retrieve the briefcase. Well into the new dark crime comedy Greedy People, I had to check IMDb to make sure this wasn’t some movie one or both of the Coen brothers had actually made and somehow I didn’t realize before diving in. Nope, it was Potsy Ponciroli who directed, and Mike Vukadinovich who wrote it. No Coens anywhere in sight except as the clear inspirations for this entertaining movie of which the masters behind Blood Simple and Fargo would probably approve, and might even have made at the beginning of their illustrious careers.
So get this for a plot.
New and very inexperienced cop Will (Himesh Patel) arrives in the small East Coast town of Providence for his new job as a deputy, partnered with quirky vet Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). With a pregnant wife (Lily James) and their loving dog in tow it seems like a good career move. However, Will...

Tim Blake Nelson is about to shoot a “spectacular” Western “Shoot” in Spain, directed by Guillermo Navarro. Guillermo Del Toro’s regular cinematographer, he already won an Academy Award for “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
“We have a great cast and a script written by British writer Ian Wilson. Westerns change, reflecting a cultural moment when it’s made. ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘Power of the Dog’… each generation needs to furnish its own take on film genres. This one is about the power of the gun as a corrupting force,” he reveals.
“It’s absolutely a current script, but it’s 100% true to its time. We are starting to shoot in November. The great thing about Westerns is that they require big vistas, but good Westerns don’t have to cost $100 million. We made ‘Old Henry’ for $1.2 million. It’s a way of having a superhero film with natural environments and no visual effects.”

“There is still very much an audience for these movies when they are really good,” Laub tells Deadline.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs earns a respectable score for its historical accuracy due to how it pokes fun at depictions of cowboys in the 1930s and '40s. The 2018 Netflix Western depicts a violent saloon with partial accuracy, but exaggerates other elements for stylistic or dramatic effect. The Coen Brothers proved themselves masters of the Western with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs after three previous well-received explorations of the genre.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the Coen Brothers' Netflix Western, earns a high accuracy grade from an Old West historian. A historical cowboy expert says Kevin Costner's Western drama of 2003, Open Range, is one of the best cowboy movies ever made. While no one ever denied it was a great execution of the genre with visible mastery in its set pieces, Old West historian and cowboy culture authority, Michael Grauer, has praised Open Range above other Western movies because of its fine attention to detail and historical accuracy.
Open Range was Costner's gamble on the Western genre during the 2000s. After the lackluster response to The Postman, a film he directed and starred in and which was panned by critics, Costner decided to take some time out, staying away from the director's chair. Tim Blake Nelson is back to a place he never thought he would be: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nelson was there from the beginning, during the debut year of the franchise in its second film, The Incredible Hulk. Nelson appeared as Samuel Sterns, who is an ally to Bruce Banner, but comic book fans know he becomes one of the Hulk's greatest enemies, The Leader. That film teased Stern's transformation into The Leader, but due to the mild box office performance of that film and rights to The Hulk being tied up with Universal, fans figured this would be a plot point never addressed again.
