Nicolas Cage in Ghostland: Terra Sem Lei (2021)

Ghostland: Terra Sem Lei

Three under-the-radar horror films to watch this week on Netflix
Image
With nearly 200 horror films on Netflix at any given moment, there’s never a shortage of great films to induce paralytic fear. As a true fan of the macabre, that’s what you want, right? As Stephen King refers to a member of his unparalleled fandom, the Constant Reader craves that jolt to the soul.

Happily, Netlifx is delighted to scare you to your very core, night after sleepless night. I’m certain they’d like nothing better than to see you as their Constant Viewer. My apologies to Mr. King, but he cribs a lot himself, as he’s more than happy to acknowledge. Of course, when King borrows, it typically results in a towering achievement. Clowns were always scary but were never as terrifying until Pennywise entered the culture.

It is not in the following group of films. A property grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide didn’t exactly fly under the radar.

Image
Nicolas Cage, an actor known for his performances that span the whimsical to the intense, has real-life love stories that are just as captivating. At 60, he has been married five times, with his current wife being more than 20 years his junior, reflecting a love journey as unpredictable as the roles he embodies.

Cage, a nephew of the legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, boasts a chapter of romances that include unions with Patricia Arquette and the late Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the iconic Elvis Presley. Currently basking in marital bliss with his fifth wife, Riko Shibata, 29, whom he wed in 2021, Cage demonstrates how love knows no bounds—even when technology steps in and one has to propose virtually.

The Best Modern Nicholas Cage Movies, Ranked
Image
Nicolas Cage, the star of the National Treasure films, is one of the most unique and adored actors in the world. He has an over-the-top presence that still manages to convey humanity and vulnerability —a trait that has come to define the later parts of his career. In addition to this, he is also one of Hollywood's most prolific performers, having released 14 films in the 2020s, with another on the way later this year.

Since Nicholas Cage puts out so many films, it's easy to miss some of the truly amazing roles that he has played. Of course, not every Nicolas Cage movie is brilliant — some are even quite bad — but there are plenty of hidden gems in his modern catalog over the past decade.

New Nicolas Cage Monster Movie Continues Star's Rotten Tomatoes Redemption After Major Slumps
Image
Nicolas Cage's Arcadian earns 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, his second Fresh score in a row. Cage's career has seen long stretches of Rotten scores since 2000, but his 2020s movies are trending positively. With upcoming films like Longlegs and Lords of War, Cage may continue his Fresh streak.

The new Nicolas Cage monster movie Arcadian has continued the star's Rotten Tomatoes redemption. Cage's career is marked by long alternating stretches of Fresh and Rotten scores on the review aggregator service, with huge strings of splats encroaching more and more after 2000. Although the star had a run of critical hits in the early 2020s, 2023 saw him earn four splats in a row before swinging back with a Certified Fresh score of 93% for Dream Scenario.

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated an official critic score out of 50 Arcadian reviews. While the score could still fluctuate as the movie gets further into its release, the...

Nicolas Cage's New Monster Movie Proves The Actor Has Been Secretly Dominating Horror For 6 Years
Image
Nicolas Cage has successfully transitioned into the horror genre, receiving high praise for his unhinged performances. Cage's recent horror films, including Mandy and Willy's Wonderland, have ranked among his highest-rated recent works. Cage's upcoming projects, such as Arcadian and Longlegs, showcase his versatility and commitment to the horror genre.

With six years' worth of relatively understated but outrageously fun performances in the genre and a new monster movie releasing very soon, Nicolas Cage has been quite unexpectedly dominating in horror on the low. Cage's enthralling horror streak roughly began with his 2018 role in the fantasy horror Mandy. Fending off Mandy's demonic biker gang and sadistic cultists was a far step away from the exploits of Cage's previous character roles, such as National Treasure's Benjamin Franklin Gates or Kick-Ass' Big Daddy, though Cage was well received nonetheless, with reviews applauding the actor for his unhinged and beautifully crafted performance.

Only Nicolas Cage Could Make ‘Prisoners of the Ghostland’ Crazier Than it Sounds
Image
How does this sound: Nicolas Cage indignantly peddling an old orange bicycle while clad in a black leather jumpsuit? How about this: Nicolas Cage wearing an old football helmet and swinging around a katana attached to his arm? If that's not enough, try this: Nicolas Cage furiously giving a rousing speech at the top of his lungs to a rapt audience. For any other actor, these moments may all comprise a career-spanning montage of outrageous moments. For Cage, this is just Prisoners of the Ghostland. At this point, it should be obvious, and you can take it from Cage himself, Prisoners of the Ghostland is a pretty crazy movie. It's a post-apocalyptic Samurai-Western that comes from the director Sion Sono, an infamous Japanese auteur with an eye for madcap excess. What one might not expect, however, is how these two renegades combine their distinct sensibilities to actually say something. Underneath...

Sundance Wish List: 45 Films We Hope Will Premiere at the 2024 Festival
Image
Every year, we here at IndieWire take on the daunting and potentially insane task of plowing through seemingly endless lists of potential Sundance entrants to pick out the films that not only could make their way onto the annual festival’s slate, but the ones we’d most like to actually land in Park City in January. As ever, there’s no shortage of possibilities for the upcoming festival, including a wide variety of films shot under various Covid protocols, a slew of holdovers from the before times, and some long-gestating films we’ve been expecting and hoping to see for entire years.

And while we don’t yet know how the twin strikes will have impacted the overall lineup — as this article is published, the SAG-AFTRA strike has been over for barely 12 hours — and who will be on hand to attend this year to tout their work, we do know that,...

Exclusive: Matthew Wilder has been set to write and direct an untitled film that chronicles the life and work of author Joan Didion.

The film, produced under David Michaels’ Enfant Terrible Cinema, will shoot in Los Angeles in the first or second quarter of 2024. Financing is being discussed with potential partners this week at AFM.

Sympathy For The Devil: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know
Image
2023 is Nicolas Cage’s year of horror movies, as he's already played Count Dracula in Renfield and will star in the upcoming Sympathy for the Devil. While Renfield delved into supernatural elements, Sympathy for the Devil focuses on psychological horror with Cage as an ominous carjacker who bears the actor's trademark over-the-top mannerisms. The movie is helmed by Israeli director Yuval Adler whose previous work includes the internationally co-produced thriller The Operative and the American thriller drama The Secrets We Keep. Newcomer Luke Paradise pens the screenplay for Sympathy for the Devil, which promises to be a roller coaster ride full of road movie genre tropes and bleak humor.

With the potential to offer one of Cage's wildest movie performances, Sympathy for the Devil’s major selling point is its leading star. But beyond the casting, the movie also offers an atmospheric, nerve-inducing journey with its premise of a carjacking...

Exclusive: Michael Mendelsohn Talks God Is a Bullet and Being Hollywood's Money Guy
Image
Having been involved in the film industry since the late-80s, Michael Mendelsohn knows first-hand just how hard it is to make a movie. Indeed, Mendelsohn has been producing and financing movies under his company, Patriot Pictures, since 2005, with 2022's Blackout (starring Josh Duhamel and Abbie Cornish) and 2021's Nicolas Cage-led Prisoners of the Ghostland being a couple of his most recent projects. Up next is God Is a Bullet from director Nick Cassavetes. However, not unlike anyone who finds themselves on a Hollywood movie set, it was a long, winding road for Mendelsohn to get to where he is today — and it started in Johnny Carson's mailroom on The Tonight Show.

"I was dealing the mail for everyone from John Travolta to Bill Cosby to Cheap Trick, Foreigner, and David Letterman," Mendelsohn said in our Zoom interview. In addition to working in the mailroom, there were instances...

Renfield Review
Nicolas Cage at an event for Fúria Sobre Rodas (2011)
Isn’t it amazing to have Nicolas Cage back in cinemas?! There is truly is no one like the mercurial, surreal performer but of course we don’t mean he has been completely gone from our screens: it’s just a lot of his output in the last decade or so has seen him predominantly confined to the smaller ones. Still, in recent years, he has graced us with his presence in ways only The Cage can with some of his most outlandish work in Mandy, Willy’s Wonderland, Prisoners of the Ghostland, and Color Out of Space, each showcasing the actor’s penchant for the extreme, the expressionistic and the fascinating.

He went full meta last year with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a brilliant satire film that poked fun at his long filmography and his unique persona, one that showed an often-forgotten funny side that helped him in his early career.

‘Electric Dragon 80.000 V’ Blu-ray Review (Third Window)
Image
Stars: Tadanobu Asano, Masatoshi Nagase | Written and Directed by Sogo Ishii

Electric Dragon 80.000 V’s opening narration, delivered by Masakatsu Funaki, informs us that dragons are not mythical creatures, they exist with the bodies of men. That’s followed by scenes of a young boy climbing an electrical pylon only to get a massive shock from the high-tension wires.

This does something to the part of his brain that “we inherited unchanged from lizards” and results in Dragon Eye Morrison frequently getting in trouble for fighting. Attempts to cure it with electric shock therapy only make it worse, turning him into a walking battery. Now an adult he collects lizards and plays guitar to work out his aggression. As the narrator puts it “what saved him from ruin was…The Electric Guitar” as we watch him play.

But ruin in the form of Thunderbolt Buddha has come looking for him.

Longlegs: Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood join the cast of Nicolas Cage horror film
Image
Two weeks ago, we heard that Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins, has racked up distribution deals with multiple companies around the world. Now Deadline has revealed the names of two actors who have joined previously announced leads Nicolas Cage (Prisoners of the Ghostland) and Maika Monroe (It Follows) in the cast: they are Alicia Witt (Urban Legend) and Blair Underwood (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). Details on the characters Witt and Underwood are playing in the movie have not been shared.

The story Perkins wrote for Longlegs is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Monroe is taking on the role of FBI Agent Lee Harker, a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns,...

Nicolas Cage Cult Classic Gets Promising Sequel Update From Writer
Image
As his resurgence continues, the Nicolas Cage cult classic Willy's Wonderland has gotten a promising sequel update from writer G.O. Parsons. Cage starred in the 2021 horror-action-comedy movie as The Janitor, an unnamed and silent drifter who finds himself stranded in a small Nevada town, where he is hired to clean up an abandoned family entertainment zone. The Janitor quickly learns of the restaurant's haunted past, with the animatronic characters possessed by the souls of a serial killer and his acolytes, putting him into a fight to survive the night.

In honor of the film's two-year anniversary, G.O. Parsons took to Twitter to look back on the Nicolas Cage cult classic, Willy's Wonderland.

Willy’s Wonderland anniversary❗️ I appreciate you, our expendable employees, for making the past 2 years a blast. Sequel❓ Trending positively. It’s matter of timing/conditions/budget/luck… and I’m working like The Janitor to make it happen.

‘The Old Way’ Review: Nicolas Cage Is a Cowboy John Wick in Bare-Bones Revenge Western
Image
Nicolas Cage scholars might quibble with the promotional claim that Brett Donowho’s “The Old Way” is the actor’s “first traditional Western” — a choice of words that’s careful not to step on the spurs of neo-genre fare like “Butcher’s Crossing” and “Prisoners of the Ghostland” — but

The first part of the problem is that Donowho’s competent but uncompelling oater doesn’t have enough fresh meat on its bones to fill out its Western cosplay. While Morgan Smith’s jaunty score does its best to summon memories of “My Darling Clementine,” and Carl W. Lucas’ threadbare script channels the same one-way modernity that “Shane” once rode towards an uncertain sunset, “The Old Way” clearly lacks the ambition to shoot for any identity of its own.

Even worse is that it gestures towards one anyway, as this low-budget genre exercise allows its characters just enough ammunition for us to...

Prolific Japanese director Sion Sono, known for such films as Love Exposure and Antiporno, as well as the recent Nicolas Cage-starrer Prisoners Of The Ghostland, has reportedly been accused of sexual harassment by several actresses in Japan.

The accusations came to light in a post on local site Shukan Josei Prime with actresses anonymously alleging impropriety. According to Deadline’s sister publication, Variety, the alleged predatory behavior has been linked to Sono’s acting workshops and an upcoming workshop has been cancelled.

Actor Yuki Matsuzaki, who has appeared in such films as Letters From Iwo Jima and The Pink Panther 2, has been tweeting about the allegations:

Now that Sion Sono is outed as a sexual predator who preys on young actresses luring them with roles in his films, I wonder if Any of the major Japanese film studios and TV networks would condemn such predatory practices? How about Japan Academy Awards?...

Japanese Cult Film Director Sion Sono Accused of Sexual Assault by 2 Women
Sion Sono in Madly (2016)
Sion Sono, the Japanese cult film director of movies like “Love Exposure” and who in 2021 directed Nicolas Cage in “Prisoners of the Ghostland,” is being accused of sexual assault by two anonymous actresses who say that he offered roles in his films in exchange for sex.

The accusations as published Monday in the Japanese magazine Shukan Josei link his alleged predatory behavior to his acting workshops, and in addition to the two unnamed women, the piece also includes a quote from a Japanese film executive who accused Sono of misconduct.

“Even now, there is a director who has no qualms about saying ‘If you screw me, I’ll give you work’. His films are acclaimed and many actresses want to appear in them. He uses that to assault women as if it’s nothing. That director is Sion Sono,” the executive told the magazine.

Sono is known for provocative indie films like 2008’s “Love Exposure,” which screened at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival and won two awards. The almost four-hour film follows the erotic adventures of a peeping tom photographer.

An unnamed actress told entertainment magazine Shukan Josei Prime that Sono told her that women have had sex with him for years to gain parts in his films, and that he is to thank for their success in the industry. She said that after Sono offered her a role, he attempted to force her to have sex with him (via Variety). After she refused, the director allegedly called another actress he had previously worked with and proceeded to engage in sexual acts in front of her. The accusations were published Monday by the Shukan Josei Prime entertainment news and gossip site. In a lengthy article, several actresses made accusations against Sono under the protection of anonymity. According to the piece, Sono, now aged 60, boasted of making sexual advances to “most of [his] leading ladies.” Sono’s alleged predatory practices have been linked to his acting workshops.

On Tuesday, Sono responded to the allegations with a statement from his company. “To whom it may concern. Thank you very much for your continued support. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and concern this may have caused to all parties concerned. We will make a new announcement after sorting out the facts.” His upcoming acting workshop has been canceled.

Nicolas Cage at an event for Fúria Sobre Rodas (2011)
Nicolas Cage Has A Pet Crow Who Profanely Insults Him, Because Of Course He Does
Nicolas Cage at an event for Fúria Sobre Rodas (2011)
There's a true art to using Nicolas Cage in your film. It's not enough to pair the actor with an outlandish premise and let him go wild for a couple of hours, as last year's "Willy's Wonderland" and, to a lesser degree, "Prisoners of the Ghostland" did. No, what Cage needs are roles with real depth that call on him to use his full range of skills as a performer, like he's done in such recent movies as "Mandy" and "Pig." It's in these instances that his passion for his craft really shines through, in the same way...

Nicolas Cage Gets Meta in First Trailer for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Image
After a major year featuring one of the best roles of his career in Pig and also one of his wildest with Sion Sono’s Prisoners of the Ghostland, Nicolas Cage is getting meta to kick off 2022. Tom Gormican’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent finds the actor starring as a fictionalized version of himself as he accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal) and things get crazier from there.

Also starring Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Haddish, the first trailer has now landed ahead of an April 22, 2022 theatrical release. “[‘Nick Cage’] is an invented version of Nic Cage,” the actor tells EW. “The character is feeling unfulfilled and contending with the rejection that can happen so often in the small town that is Hollywood. It’s not me. I’m feeling pretty good about things.

‘The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent’ Trailer: Nic Cage Stars As Undercover Nic Cage In April
Image
2021 marks another year of Nicolas Cage’s unflagging commitment to star in virtually any film his agent offers him. And par usual, Cage brought his idiosyncratic A-game to each film that starred him. This year was a particularly vibrant crop of Cage performances: “Wally’s Wonderland,” “Prisoners Of The Ghostland,” and “Pig” (which some think earns the actor an Oscar nom).

As always, though, the Cage train keeps on rolling, and next year brings four more films to his expansive catalog.

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent Star Nicolas Cage Feels 'Pretty Good' About Playing Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage at an event for Fúria Sobre Rodas (2011)
You know who's enjoying a sneakily great 2021? Nicolas Cage, that's who. Taken together, all three of the films he's starred in this year have shown off the full range of acting talent that the man, myth, and legend is fully capable of. "Prisoners of the Ghostland" feels like a classic unhinged Cage performance filtered through a very specific Eastern lens. "Willy's Wonderland" somehow dials up the Cage-meter even higher, pitting the him against an army of creepy animatronic characters. Neither of those films have anything on "Pig," however, which challenges audiences to leave all their preconceptions of the actor...

Film Review: Red Post On Escher Street (2020) by Sion Sono
Image
Seemingly appearing out of nowhere, “Red Post On Escher Street” is a Sion Sono movie that can be best described as a return to the rebellious style where he shines the brightest. While news of its production was not totally unknown with a fact or two being revealed throughout the year, the eyes of every Sono fan were fixed towards his East-meets-West thriller “Prisoners Of The Ghostland”, so the release did feel like a genuine surprise.

“Red Post on Escher Street” is Screening at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival

Sono’s 2020 release follows a filmmaker, known in the movie industry as a festival magnet, who is asked by a major film studio to direct a film for them, which the studio boss hopes shall receive a warm welcome at the festival circuit. When Kobayashi, the filmmaker, decides to hold a mass audition to select his cast, a multitude of characters...

Film Review: Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021) by Sion Sono
Image
Occasionally, and particularly during the last years, a number of Sion Sono works look like a tribute to himself, with him implementing aspects of his great movies of the past. This approach actually worked for some titles, with “Tokyo Vampire Hotel” being a great sample. It seems though, it does not work at all in a Hollywood-Japanese collaborative setting, with “Prisoners of the Ghostland” functioning as a faulty mixture of “Sukiyaki Western Django”, “Mad Max”, “Preacher” and Sono’s past movies. Let us take things from the beginning though.

“Prisoners of the Ghostland” is streaming exclusively on AMC+ and Shudder

The story is set in the frontier city of Samurai Town, wherea ruthless bank robber, Hero, who supposedly did not shy away from killing innocent bystanders during his “jobs” is sprung from jail by the wealthy and quite sinister kingpin The Governor, who wants him to find the whereabouts of his adopted granddaughter Bernice.

‘Prisoners of the Ghostland’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Nicolas Cage, Bill Moseley, Sofia Boutell, Nick Cassavetes, Tak Sakaguchi, Young Dais, Charles Glover, Tetsu Watanabe | Written by Aaron Hendry, Reza Sixo Safai | Directed by Sion Sono

I love Nicholas Cage movies, the crazier the better. Sometimes though some movies feel like they just weren’t made for him. Prisoners of the Ghostland is a film that holds so much promise but in the end feels like other movies have done the same thing, just way better.

When the Governor (Bill Moseley) sends out notorious criminal Hero (Nicolas Cage) to find his Bernice (Sofia Boutella), Hero believes this could be his chance to redeem himself for his past. Strapped into a suit that will blow him up if he doesn’t succeed in his task, he is fighting time to find the girl and hopefully save himself.

The start of Prisoners of the Ghostland shows a lot of promise,...

Japanese Film Industry Opens Slowly to Embrace International Influences
Image
Not too long ago, the Japanese film industry was enclosed in a tight domestic bubble, with local filmmakers mostly making local films for local audiences. Japanese studios appreciated international recognition, but regarded foreign sales as a sort of after-dinner mint – a nice extra, but not essential.

One reason for this “Japan only” mentality was the size of the local market – still the third-largest in the world in terms of box office — which allowed local films at all budget levels to comfortably recoup at home. Another was the long list of missteps and failures by Japanese filmmakers and studios when they ventured abroad or tried to target foreign markets.

The most notorious example was the firing of Kurosawa Akira after two weeks of shooting the 1970 WWII epic “Tora, Tora, Tora.” More recently, one-time uber-producer Sento Takenori lost his production company Rumble Fish in 2008 after his strategy of making art films for...
