Descendants fans finally have a release date for the latest film in the franchise. Disney has released a new teaser for ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ showcasing the titular character. This film will be years after the others, so most of the cast is new.

‘Descendants’ started in 2015 with the first film, and two more films, ‘Descendants 2’ and ‘Descendants 3’ followed in 2017 and 2019, respectively. Now, five years later a new film is finally releasing.

Rita Ora and Brandy (Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella) have joined China Anne McClain, Kylie Cantrall, and Dara Reneé in The Pocketwatch, a new entry in Disney+’s Descendants franchise. Ora will be playing Alice in Wonderland‘s Queen of Hearts and Brandy’s on board to reprise her role as Cinderella in the new musical directed by Jennifer Phang (The Flight Attendant).

The cast also includes Malia Baker (The Babysitter’s Club), Ruby Rose Turner (Coop and Cami Ask the World), Morgan Dudley (Jagged Little Pill on Broadway), and Joshua Colley (Senior Year). Melanie Paxson will return as Fairy Godmother, a character she played in the previous Descendants films.

Succession star Jeremy Strong is taking on a new role, headlining and exec-producing the 9/11 first-responder limited series The Best of Us, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The in-development project explores the human fallout from the Sept. 11 attacks, with a focus on the first responders, students, teachers, New Yorkers and volunteers who worked on “The Pile” and how they were affected and treated. A network is not yet attached to the series.

ABC had some pixie dust to spare this week — and a hole to fill in its Tuesday-night schedule! — resulting in a double dose of Disney on Dancing With the Stars.

Whereas Monday’s broadcast featured the dances of Disney heroes (read recap), Tuesday’s episode was all about Disney villains. And in a truly wicked twist, Dancing ended the show with a double elimination, counteracting Monday’s joyous announcement that no one would be going home on Heroes Night. The film centers on a murder that takes place during a high school reunion party and has already attracted a cast of comedy heavyweights and in-demand actors. Doan will appear alongside Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Jamie Chung, Michael Hitchcock and Chace Crawford. Chris Nelson (“The Perfect Date”) is directing the film from a screenplay by the “The Edge of Sleep” writing duo, Jake Emanuel and Willie Block.

Doan was part of the main cast of Cinemax’s “Warrior,” playing Mai Ling. On HBO Max’s reincarnated “Gossip Girl,” Thomas Doherty plays Max Wolfe, a 17-year-old romantic omnivore who seduces all the boys and girls — and even a male teacher — at his Upper East Side high school. But on this day in late July, just a few weeks after the debut of his breakout TV role, Doherty isn’t kissing anybody.

The 26-year-old Scottish actor logs on to a Zoom call, dressed in a blue hoodie. His eyes are groggy; his voice sounds hoarse, and his words are interrupted by a throaty cough. Apparently not even our brightest TV stars are impervious to Covid-19, which Doherty contracted a few days ago — postponing our photo shoot and an in-person meeting.

Dove Cameron and Thomas Doherty have called it quits after three years together. On Friday, Dove confirmed their split on her Instagram and Twitter, revealing that the two had parted ways in October. "The decision was incredibly difficult, but we still have love for each other, and will remain friends. Thank you for allowing us our privacy in this time," she wrote. Thomas has yet to comment on the breakup.

Dove and Thomas first connected on the set of Descendants 2 back in late 2016, and it didn't take long for a romantic relationship to blossom. HBO Max has added four new actors to the cast of its “Gossip Girl” sequel series, including Thomas Doherty, who played Scottish musician Liam opposite Zoë Kravitz on Hulu’s “High Fidelity” reboot.

Tavi Gevinson (“Twilight Zone”), Adam Chanler-Berat (“Amelie”), and Zion Moreno (“Claws”) were also added to the cast. Doherty’s other credits include “Catherine the Great” on HBO and Disney’s “Descendants 2.”

It’s been a while since we found out that Disney+ UK’s launch would be running around five months behind its debut in the Us and we’ve certainly had a grumble about it, as we’re fond of doing here on days with ‘y’s’ in them, but the streaming service is finally coming to this green and, er, pleasant land later this month.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 24-year-old actor didn't shy away from singing the praises of his girlfriend as he spoke about their special bond. "She is just the most incredible person I've ever met," he said. "I think people see her as so talented - because obviously that's her job, to perform and all the rest of it - but she's the most compassionate and the most patient and the most genuine, loving person I've ever met. Disney Channel’s premiere of the musical Descendants 3 drew 8.4 million total viewers in Live+3 ratings to rank as the top show across all of television on Friday night. It also was cable’s highest-rated program since 2017’s Descendants 2 in several key young demos.

The threequel — which was dedicated to the memory of its star Cameron Boyce, who died last month — ranked No. 1 on Saturday in every demo Disney Channel tracks. Per Nielsen, it was the top-rated telecast on all of cable in two years among kids 6-11, tweens 9-14, girls 6-11 and girls 9-14.

In July 2017, Descendants 2 premiered to 8.6 million total viewers for Disney Channel and 21 million across six Disney-owned networks including ABC in L+3. The original Descendants did even better for its July 2015 bow. All three pics in the franchise soared in L+3 over Live+same day.

Promoting strong female characters was very much on brand for several of Disney Channel’s star characters at Saturday’s Disney Channel Fan Fest held at California Adventure Park, a day-long event that treated kids and their families to a bevy of fan-focused activities, from Q&A sessions to musical performances and meet and greets with Disney Channel stars.

Sofia Carson, who stars as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen in Disney Channel’s original movies “Descendants” and “Descendants 2,” revealed that in the third installation her character will continue to be a positive role model for young viewers.

“Evie has always been very much focused on her heart and what she cares about most is giving back and especially empowering young girls and young women everywhere, so you’ll especially see that in ‘Descendants 3,’ said Carson, who also joined the cast of the Freeform drama series “Pretty Little Liars” this past year.

“The Greatest Showman” was met by a so-so critical reception, but the P.T. Barnum biopic starring Hugh Jackman has taken on a life of its own. In addition to grossing $435 million and picking up Best Picture and Best Actor nods in the Golden Globes’ Musical or Comedy category, the film outsold every other album released by year — and it isn’t even close. Not only was it the only album to sell more than a million copies, but its 1.3 million sales more than doubled that of its closest competitor, the soundtrack to “A Star Is Born,” which sold 525,000 albums.

In a music world where streaming services now overwhelmingly rule the market, who still actually bothers to buy albums? One obvious answer: people who also buy movie tickets.

BuzzAngle Music’s newly released data for 2018 shows that the two top selling albums of the year were the soundtracks for “The Greatest Showman” and “A Star Is Born.” By BuzzAngle’s calculations, which include an accumulation of individual track sales as well as pure album units, “Greatest Showman” was the sole million seller of the year, racking up 1.3 million in album sales. “A Star Is Born,” which was only released in time for fourth-quarter sales, came in second, with 525,000 albums.

The competition wasn’t even close in the album sales category. The year’s third biggest selling album, Justin Timberlake’s “Man of the Woods,” lagged far behind with 377,000.

Ariana Greenblatt has been one of the strongest contestants in season one of “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors,” but she had a scare on Halloween Night, getting her lowest score of the season for what I thought was a pretty darn good paso doble (watch it above). Were the judges right to be so tough on her, or were they “Wicked” for no reason?

Mentor Brandon Armstrong cracked the whip when training Greenblatt and her partner Artyon Celestine for their paso doble — which Greenblatt thought sounded more like “Picasso.” But she got the job done when it counted, bringing lots of intensity to their dance to “Ways to Be Wicked” from the Disney Channel musical “Descendants 2.” However, judge Adam Rippon wanted to see more emotional “range” from the young dancer, Mandy Moore thinks she needs to be challenged more, and Val Chmerkovskiy wanted to see more proper choreographic content.

The “Dancing with the Stars” two-night Halloween event started with the “Juniors” on Sunday night. The kids’ fright fest brought out breakthrough performances from a couple of rising contestants, while another early favorite “descended” on the leaderboard and we cried boo-hoo over the elimination at the end of the night. So who do you think gave the best performances, who gave the worst performances, and did the judges and studio audience get it right with the season’s fifth elimination?

As you might have guessed above, it was Alana Thompson — aka Honey Boo Boo from the reality series “Toddlers and Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” — who was eliminated when Halloween Night was over. Her scores had improved slightly since week one, and she seemed to have the support of the studio audience, so it looked like she had a ghost of a chance to advance pretty far in the competition.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 34 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. Last year, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Disney Channel’s Descendants 3 just got more villainous. The cable net said today that Cheyenne Jackson is set to play Hades, the underworld ruler from Disney’s 1997 toon Hercules, rounding out the cast of the telepic threequel set for 2019.
