When Andrew Martin is talking about the "Race to the North" between the LMS and the LNER railway companies, he correctly describes "the West Coast route" and "the East Coast route". A map is shown on which two routes are displayed. However the more westerly one is the Midland Main Line, which runs up the middle of the country, not the LNWR (West Coast) Main Line. LMS trains on the "Race to the North" always used the West Coast Main Line as it was quicker.

Andrew Martin: Today there is the normal scrimmage around the departure boards because no-one yet knows from which platform the train will leave. I'm one step ahead, however. The guidebook, produced in 1924 for people travelling to the Cornish Riviera, begins "No need to ask which platform for the Cornish Riviera Express - it's Number 1, every time". Platform 1 was always the pre-eminent platform for this station, reserved for the important trains.
