From teen pop princess to rock ‘n’ roll renegade, Miley Cyrus has literally reinvented herself more times than we can count, perhaps even more than artists change outfits on tour. She’s a music legend, a little bit country, a little bit wrecking ball, and a whole lot of can’t-stop-won’t-stop. One minute she’s roaring her goddess vibes, the next she’s belting heartache in glam-rock perfect. Honestly, she’s an icon who doesn’t just drop albums, she drops ears, moods, and chaos in the best way possible.
Let’s talk about her voice. Perfectly golden, gritty, that gives you chills whether she’s covering Metallica or crooning country soul. Each album of Cyrus comes with a flipped script, shattering expectations, and somehow making mullets cool again. And honestly, she can’t be ignored.

This interview, part of our Cannes 2025 coverage, was originally published in the Notebook Special, a limited-edition print publication distributed at the Cannes Film Festival.Far from Heaven. One could be forgiven for feeling a bit wistful celebrating Todd Haynes’s extraordinary career in 2025. The 64-year-old American director is about to receive the Carrosse d’Or at the Directors’ Fortnight, the festival’s version of a lifetime achievement award, and it’s a reflective moment to honor an artist whose films, from the start, so provocatively confronted the evils of the times in which they were made. With epochal experiments like Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), Poison (1991), and Safe (1995), Haynes broke out against a backdrop of extreme crisis—the AIDS epidemic and the political iniquity carried out in its wake—and any consideration of his filmography remains inseparable from these sociopolitical realities. Upon release, Poison became a central pawn in the...

Relationships are often the crux of most films that explore human nature. Who we are, what we do, and who we become are often the consequences of our interactions with others and the trauma as well as lessons we carry from these karmic bonds we create in our lives. Poison for me felt like an epilogue to Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage. The only additional factor is that Poison explores the breakdown of a marriage in the aftermath of the loss of a child. This creates a deeper and far more nuanced exploration of grief, one that isn’t just limited to the couple but also revelatory of the common wound they share and need closure to heal from, together. The entire film compresses time so as to heighten the dramatic narrative and create a vacuum for the characters to live through their past, all in one afternoon. This...

Exclusive: Hulu has greenlit a docuseries about the murder of Mike Williams, a Baptist from Florida who was originally thought to have been eaten by alligators.
The untitled four-part series will premiere over the summer on Hulu and is produced by UK production company Plum Pictures and ABC News Studios. Post-production is currently underway.
The true-crime series chronicles the events surrounding December 16, 2000, when Williams set out for a duck hunting trip on Lake Seminole and never returned.
Williams and his wife, Denise, had what seemed like an idyllic friendship with Kathy and Brian Winchester in Tallahassee, Florida.
The two young couples loved hunting and the great outdoors, doing everything as a foursome, including planning the birth of their babies within months of each other.
But after Williams went missing and Brian Winchester divorced Kathy and married Denise, the accident suddenly looked a little more sinister.
In 2017, nearly two decades after Williams vanished,...

Todd Haynes is a filmmaker who has always refused to play by the rules. One of the most distinctive and provocative directors working today, from the moment he burst onto the indie scene in the late ’80s, he made it clear that he wasn’t interested in telling stories the way Hollywood expected.
He’s obsessed with identity, performance, and the ways people construct (or are forced to construct) facades to survive. And so, his work swings between two key fascinations. The quiet lives of people who break taboos – whether they mean to or not – and the larger-than-life personas of rockstars, both real and imagined.
Born in Los Angeles in 1961, Haynes studied film at Bard College, where he directed Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, a shockingly effective (and sometimes banned) biopic of the famous singer’s tragic life,...

British actor Tim Roth drew a big crowd and much applause with a masterclass at the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival (LuxFilmFest) last week, in which he discussed such topics as his work with Tupac Shakur, Quentin Tarantino and Werner Herzog and how he prepared for his first TV role as a racist skinhead.
He was one of the big names attending the anniversary edition of the fest, along with the star-studded jury, which was led by Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof and also included Danish actress Trine Dyrholm (The Girl With the Needle, Poison), Austrian actress Valerie Pachner (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, A Hidden Life), L.A.- and Luxembourg-based VFX expert Jeff Desom (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Spanish director Albert Serra (Afternoons of Solitude), and screenwriter Paul Laverty. The festival has also featured a masterclass by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar.

Meetings of fascists, young skinheads, Elvis, experiences with such legendary directors as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino and Werner Herzog, and the media circus around Oscar nominees — those were just some of the topics addressed by British actor Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Rob Roy, Lie to Me) during a master class at the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival on Wednesday.
The crowded session followed Tuesday night’s Luxembourg premiere of independent movie Poison, directed by Désirée Nosbusch (Bad Banks), in which Roth stars opposite Danish actress Trine Dyrholm as a couple that meets again years after tragedy drove them apart. Roth also received a festival honor Tuesday evening.
In his wide-ranging master class, he also discussed working with the likes of Charlton Heston, and, to the surprise of some in the audience, Tupac Shakur.

The sixth episode of Harley Quinn season 5 was a lot of fun. Lois Lane punched Harley in the face, Clayface and Bane wrote a musical (that was totally a shot at Joker: Folie a Deux), and then the musical was performed and it was hilarious. And shockingly, the audience loved it.
But things didn’t stay cheerful on the DC TV series. As Brainiac watched the play, he saw Frank the Plant mocking Koko and saying his alien monkey companion was dead. As he begins laughing, he finally realizes Koko is really dead. This puts him in a fouler mood than normal.
After the realization, Brainiac looks at the screen and says, “I only have you to talk to. I don’t know if you know what it is like to lose what you love most. How it makes you feel. How nothing even matters anymore. I'm sure none of...

The 75th Berlin Film Festival has concluded after nine days of fearless cinema in Germany. IndieWire was on the ground this year and earlier this week took a closer look at the top contenders for the Berlinale Golden Bear, which will be announced today along with other prizes.
That Rose Byrne and director Mary Bronstein had returned to the Palast red carpet meant their film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” (which bowed early on at Berlin after world premiering at Sundance in January) was bound to win something. Byrne won the Silver Bear for Best Lead Performance for her turn as a stressed-out mother in crisis in the A24 psychodrama. Hopefully, this award gives Byrne momentum for the 2025 awards season ahead; it’s one of the great screen performances and certainly the crown of her career.

The 39th Teddy Awards, the Berlin International Film Festival’s prestigious LGBTQ honors, celebrated both emerging talents and seasoned pioneers in queer cinema.
The best feature film accolade went to Lesbian Space Princess, directed by Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs. This animated comedy follows Princess Saira on an “inter-gay-lactic” mission to rescue her ex-girlfriend from the clutches of the “Straight White Maliens.”
In the best documentary/essay film category, 82-year-old queer cinema pioneer Rosa von Praunheim took top honors for his autobiographical doc-fiction mash-up Satanische Sau (Satanic Sow). This year’s Berlin Film Festival, under new artistic director Tricia Tuttle, moves closer toward popular tastes than arguably under the stead of Carlo Chatrian. He departed the festival last year while leaving behind a legacy of programming a more arthouse-minded slate. Italian cineaste Chatrian came from Locarno as well as more niche festivals throughout Europe; Tuttle is an American with a history of film journalism and programming in the States and at the BFI London.

It’s the halfway mark of the 75th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival and, so far, no clear frontrunner has emerged from the 19 films in this year’s competition lineup.
Judging the would-be Gold and Silver Bear winners is a jury headed by U.S. director Todd Haynes, the queer cinema pioneer who made his feature debut here back in 1991 with Poison, which took the Teddy Award for best LGBTQ work.
Haynes came up in the 1980s, closely aligned with activist and gay-rights movements that arose in response to the Reagan government and its inaction on the AIDS crisis. It’s a legacy he says he is drawing on now, in the weeks since Donald Trump’s inauguration.

If you're missing your favorite show, a good way to pass the time might be to watch a different show that has some things in common with it. But what about finding a few good books to read instead? There are some excellent fantasy books that will fill the House of the Dragon void right now.
House of the Dragon is one of those shows that covers a lot of genres. It’s historical fiction, with many elements based on English history. Then there are the fantasy elements of dragons and visions, as well as the battles, the romance, and the political scheming.
The great news is there are plenty of fantasy books out there that will help to bridge the gap before the third season of House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and Max in 2026. Some of them are standalone books, while others are bigger series of books with expansive worlds.

For the vast majority of the season, Disney Channel actress Chandler Kinney and her partner Brandon Armstrong have dominated the leaderboard. They’re still near the front of the pack, but several competitors are hot on their heels.
Although Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach had been at the bottom of the leaderboard, they astounded the judges and viewers with their frightening Contemporary routine to “Ring Around the Rosie” by District 78. Daniella generally excels at choreography on Halloween Night and this season didn’t disappoint. The judges...

Prime Video's Brothers is accompanied by a unique soundtrack that perfectly matches its own quirky story. The film, directed by Max Barbakow (Palm Springs) and starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Josh Brolin (Avengers), Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons), and more, is a buddy road trip and heist crime comedy all in one. Naturally, this would require an equally interesting mix of songs to set the moodfrom artists like Jane's Addiction and Poison to Hal Leonard Jazz Band and Seor Soul. The various songs of the Brothers soundtrack brought the outrageous comedy easily to life.
Brothers follows a pair of twin brothers who have been partners in crimes since they were children. However, as adults, one was sent to prison while the other did all he could to get a clean start. Everything falls apart for the latter brother, Moke, when the former, Jady, gets out of prison under the terms...

Cristin Milioti may have the ultimate looks and charms required to play the lead character Sofia Falcone in The Penguin series, but that’s not all she has: She has an incredibly rich history of fangirling over Batman’s universe in her childhood as well. To say the least, she was the ultimate fan of the Caped Crusader ever since the young years of her life.

Of course, this included her dressing up as her favorite hero and villain from the Dark Knight saga on Halloween and other occasions after becoming truly infatuated with them from the comics and TV. The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.
I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.

Were you as surprised as we were with that twist on the season 12 premiere of “The Masked Singer” when one Buffalo turned into a herd? We were wowed by their harmonies on the classic Cutting Crew track “(I Just) Died In Your Arms.” These three clearly make their livings by raising their voice in song. But we don’t think that they are one of the groups mentioned by the judges: B2K (Jenny), Earth, Wind & Fire (Rita) or 3/4 of 98 Degrees (Robin).
We’ve been reviewing the clues and that stand-out performance on September 25 as well as their encore appearances on October 2 and October 9 and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Buffalo”?

Joaquin Phoenix has had an incredible acting career filled with memorable roles, but he is also building up a worrying reputation. The actor has always been skittish about his involvement with projects behind the scenes, but the lid blew open when he left Todd Haynes' upcoming gay romance film also starring Danny Ramirez. Now, Haynes' producer Christine Vachon has spoken out about the abrupt exit that caused the project's now-infamous collapse, not mincing words about how devastating it has been.
While attending the San Sebastian Film Festival (via The Hollywood Reporter), Christine Vachon discussed the latest news on Joaquin Phoenix exiting Todd Hayne's project, confirming that "pretty much what happened is out there for all of you to see." She does not have anything new to report regarding the project or Phoenix's exit but says "It was tragic," especially due to Haynes' age. Vachon expanded:

The movie Poison tells the story of Lucas and Edith, two individuals forever altered by a shared tragedy in their past. Directed by Désirée Nosbusch in her feature film debut, it stars Tim Roth and Trine Dyrholm as the estranged ex-couple who find themselves reunited ten years later at their son’s grave.
A chance encounter brings Lucas and Edith face to face with the overwhelming grief and painful memories neither has truly processed since that fateful night that drove them apart.
Through nuanced performances by Roth and Dyrholm, we see how one sought to escape the anguish through distance while the other remains stuck, frozen in the past. Their initial reconnection is understandably tense, awkward polite gestures masking a torrent of simmering emotions underneath.
As secrets and recriminations are unleashed over the long day at the cemetery, it becomes clear these scars still run deep. Director Nosbusch guides us...

"I didn't see it happen, but I felt it! I feel it!" Transmission Films in Australia has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Poison, made by filmmaker Désirée Nosbusch. This initially premiered at the 2024 Munich Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at the Galway Film Fleadh. A poignant story about love and hidden truths that resonates long after the movie ends – starring Tim Roth and Trine Dyrholm as a former couple. A love story about a couple reunited years after tragedy drove them apart. Their brief and intense meeting brings simmering pain and resentment to the surface but is a reminder too of cherished intimacies and the love they once shared. This trailer hints at the reveal that their child passed away, and they've been struggling with it ever since, letting out their emotions and frustrations during this meeting at the cemetery.
