A whole new world… of nightmare fuel is coming, as Aladdinis the latest Disney classic to get the horror movie treatment. According to Deadline, Terrifier 3 star Bradley Stryker is attached to direct a "dark, supernatural reimagining" of the Arabic folktale from One Thousand and One Nights that Disney famously turned into an animated movie, telling the story of a street urchin who discovers a magic lamp containing a larger-than-life genie. Anyone wanting to see a twisted take on this children's favorite is now about to have their wish granted because Aladdin: The Monkey's Paw is officially heading into production next month in the UK.

There are two completely different kinds of brutality afoot in movies like “Screamboat,” the latest in the low-budget horror movie craze to pervert beloved intellectual property the instant their 95-year copyright protection lapses into the public domain. First, there’s whatever sadistic fates the filmmakers have in mind for the characters, from being impaled by a forklift to having their faces plunged into the propeller of the Staten Island Ferry. But the real violence — and the reason audiences presumably pay to see these IP parasites — is what’s done to the characters themselves, as there’s an illicit thrill in desecrating powerful brands, like Disney.

Here’s another draining bout of horror opportunism, spawned in this instance by the copyright expiring on Disney’s Steamboat Willie, the 1928 landmark animation that launched Mickey Mouse into the world. Scurrying on to screens months behind the similarly motivated The Mouse Trap, Steven Lamorte’s bloody pastiche opens with a quote coyly ascribed to “Walt D” before plodding mirthlessly in the pawprints of those recent Winnie-the-Pooh carve-ups, demonstrating no greater brio, invention or wit. Its mock Mickey is a genetically modified super-violent pipsqueak, let loose from the sewers by blundering engineers; rather than the jaunty steamboat his predecessor commandeered, he wreaks murderous havoc on a grimy approximation of the Staten Island ferry, whistling while he works.

As David Howard Thornton continues to gain notoriety for his role as Art the Clown in the popular Terrifier movies, his fans and slasher movie fanatics should book a ticket for Screamboat, a new killer cruise-ride horror movie opening in the U.S. in April 2025. Thornton portrays a murderous version of Mickey Mouse in the subversive slasher movie, building on a new disturbing Disney horror trend after last year's The Mouse Trap.

With obvious nods to Jason Takes Manhattan, a classic slasher on a cruise ship stopping in New York, Screamboat turns a touristy ferry ride into a fiendish and ferocious course through hyperviolent hell. In case the poster didn’t give it away, I Heart Willie is based on Steamboat Willie, the original version of Mickey Mouse. This marks yet another public domain horror film capitalizing on the recent trend of turning classic characters into nightmare fuel.

That said, I Heart Willie stands apart from most of its predecessors in a few key ways. Unlike many of the previous public domain horror films, it has no connection to the so-called “Poohniverse,” the set of horror films. Additionally, it wasn’t produced in the UK, where many of these films have originated. Instead, I Heart Willie is a Mexican production, filmed in and around Michoacán, lending it a different cultural and aesthetic flavour than its predecessors.

Plot-wise, however, it follows a familiar trajectory.

Ahead of I Heart Willie‘s theatrical release on February 26, Hewes Pictures has shared the opening scene of the Steamboat Willie-inspired slasher.

Playing below, the four-minute clip sees the mouse-boy brutally torturing a man as an exterminator approaches.

In the film, “Popular YouTubers Daniel and Nico are invited to investigate a haunted property drawn by rumors of a malevolent force. The legend centers around a boy born with deformities, resembling a human-mouse hybrid, who inspired Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willie.

“Abused and isolated, the boy, now known as Willie, crafts a bodysuit from the skins of trespassers. Over the years, his gruesome legacy fades into folklore—until a series of disappearances sparks renewed interest. As Daniel and Nico set up for a night of thrills, they unknowingly step into a deadly game of survival.”

The Mexican production is directed by Alejandro G. Alegre and written by David Vaughn, who plays as Willie.

The next Mickey Mouse horror movie to be released in theaters is Screamboat, which gives a deadly twist to the classic Disney animated short Steamboat Willie – however, the first official look at the villain shows it’s repeating the most disappointing element from Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood & Honey, but there’s a twist that can save it. A popular yet controversial trend in horror that keeps gaining force is adaptations of children’s characters and stories. While the Twisted Childhood Universe keeps building its own world, other studios aren’t wasting the chance to give a touch of horror to once-innocent characters.

One character who has been very popular among horror filmmakers is Steamboat Willie, who has already gotten a couple of horror movies with more in development. This April, horror movie fans will get to see a version of Mickey Mouse unlike any they've seen before. Based on the classic 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie, the official debut of characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Screamboat features none other than Art the Clown himself, David Howard Thornton, taking over as this menacing mouse.

On January 13, Variety exclusively shared a first look at Thornton in his menacing mouse getup, and it's... interesting. It's hard to make a mouse look scary, I guess. Because even though he's wielding a bloody harpoon, Thornton still looks kind of cuddly in his furry outfit.

Screamboat was initially supposed to come out this month, but Iconic Events Releasing has moved the release date to April. Much like airplanes, submarines are an excellent setting for films, especially in the horror and thriller genres. Not only are they inherently claustrophobic, but they also provide a great reason for the characters to stick around rather than run off to save themselves and get help. Also, as an added bonus, as long as you have access to a good simulator or a decommissioned craft, the Hmcs Ojibwa in this case, they can be shot economically on one location.

This year saw one of the most zealously-guarded corporate empires of intellectual property spring a leak, as all the Magic Kingdom’s horses and men couldn’t keep Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain. Strictly speaking, what was no longer protected were the first three shorts in which that fabled rodent appeared, all made in 1928 — so, under current U.S. laws, their copyrights have now expired. Two years prior, the same thing happened to author A.A. Milne’s whimsical anthropomorphic creations. That liberation resulted in the quickie horror cash-in “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a near-unwatchable enterprise that cheered no one outside its makers’ accountants. Ergo, 2024 has brought us “The Mouse Trap,” which could even worse than “B&h,” which set a bar so low it was subterranean.

This Canadian production from director Jamie Bailey and writer-actor Simon Phillips no doubt hoped to spin its bad-taste concept toward similar viral-phenomenon status.

Silent Bite is the third exercise in seasonal slaughter from writer/actor Simon Phillips, who also gave us Once Upon a Time at Christmas and its sequel The Nights Before Christmas. While they weren’t the greatest examples of the genre, they were far from the worst as well, and they do say the third time is the charm, so I decided to kick off my Christmas viewing with it.

A gang of Santa suited bank robbers, Prancer, Grinch, Father Christmas (Simon Phillips), and Snowman, are hiding out at The Jolly Roger Inn and Resort. Despite its name, it’s a dump in the middle of nowhere, which makes it perfect for them to lie low while Rudolph leads the police on a wild good chase.

ITN Studios has renamed their horror movie inspired by Mickey Mouse from ‘The Mouse Experiment’ to ‘Mouse of Horrors.’

This exciting new indie film has released an official trailer and promises a terrifying twist on a beloved character.

The movie, set to hit theaters soon, features a group of friends who find themselves trapped and hunted by a mutated rat named Steamboat Willie at a creepy amusement park.

Directed by Brendan Petrizzo, the cast of ‘Mouse of Horrors’ includes Natasha Tosini, Lewis Santer, Nichaela Farrell, Michelle Bauer, Allie Moreno, and Tessa Wood. It’s important to note that this film is not associated with the so-called “Poohniverse.”

Interestingly, the film taps into the newly public domain character of Steamboat Willie, the classic 1928 short film character that marked Mickey Mouse’s debut. Now that it’s public domain, filmmakers are free to use this version of Mickey without needing Disney’s approval.

Originally announced under the title The Mouse Experiment, ITN Studios has announced today that their upcoming Mickey-inspired horror movie is now titled Mouse of Horrors.

As Halloween quickly approaches, every streaming service is gearing up to provide plenty of spooky entertainment for its subscribers. Peacock is no different, and the scary films slated to hit the platform next month are all but certain to be a must-watch for many viewers. However, while a plethora of horror films are ready to arrive in the coming weeks, plenty of movies in various other genres will be available throughout October.

Along with a slew of horror flicks, the streaming platform also has a popular childrens movie scheduled for release, as well as an enduring coming-of-age story viewers wont want to skip. No matter the genre of movie Peacock subscribers want to watch, the streaming service has them covered all month long. Whether audiences prefer to lean into the Halloween holiday or steer clear of anything they deem too frightening, theyre bound to find something for either situation.

Peacock has announced the lineup of movies, TV shows, and live sports that will be available on the streaming service in October. The Peacock October 2024 schedule includes the streaming premieres of The Mouse Trap and Blackwater Lane, as well as the debut of the terrifying Peacock Originals Teacup and Hysteria!

The classic short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie has officially entered the public domain, which means filmmakers don’t need the permission of Disney to use that original incarnation of Mickey in their horror movies. And a whole bunch of them are taking advantage, with a slew of twisted Mickey projects already in the works.

The first of these features was The Mouse Trap, released just last month, with Screamboat headed our way sometime next year. And then there’s Mouseboat Massacre, coming soon.

Additionally, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned that ITN Studios is getting set to unleash The Mouse Experiment, and they’ve provided us with the official poster today.

The first of these features was The Mouse Trap, released just last month, with Screamboat headed our way sometime next year.

There’s another Mickey Mouse-inspired horror movie coming soon, Bloody Disgusting has learned this week. From director Andrea M. Catinella, it’s titled Mouseboat Massacre.

The filmmaking team tells Bloody Disgusting, “Mouseboat Massacre paints a terrifying and unsettling picture. A slasher horror film that takes a beloved childhood icon and twists it into something nightmarish. The juxtaposition of something so innocent with a dark, psychotic twist is a brilliant way to tap into deep-seated fears and nostalgia gone wrong.”

One of horror's more divisive trends continues in the Screamboat teaser trailer. The movie hails from director Steven Lamorte, who previously made a name for himself by directing 2022's The Mean One, a slasher horror twist on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Screamboat will center on a group of New Yorkers who come under attack by a figure who looks akin to Mickey Mouse aboard a late-night ferry, with the project entering development after Steamboat Willie entered the public domain.

Now, some eight months after the movie was first announced, Iconic Events Releasing has debuted the first Screamboat teaser trailer.

On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick that we now know is titled Screamboat. There’s a seemingly familiar face stalking the funfair in The Mouse Trap, a horror chiller that’ll make you look at one of your childhood favourites very differently!

It’s Alex’s 21st Birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.

Directed by Jamie Bailey (What Lurks Beneath), The Mouse Trap is written by Simon Phillips (Blood Harvest), who also stars as Mickey, the masked killer, terrorising a gang of friends late one night at an amusement arcade. There’s shocks and gore galore as Mickey dons his mask and goes on a rodent rampage.

With a trailer that’s already scored over one million views on YouTube, this is a horror film that’s sure to get everyone talking.

And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.

In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.

The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

This year, Peacock is bringing everything you need to face your fears, with more than 150 new Halloween titles heading to the service through October.

What strange times we live in. Not only have we had two Winnie The Pooh themed horror films and a Cinderella one in the works, we’re also getting a Mickey Mouse slasher this September.

We’ve had Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey as well as its sequel, and a horror movie centred around Bambi is on the way. But the film that must really piss Disney off is The Mouse Trap. Filmed as Mickey’s Mouse Trap, which was probably a bit too much for the lawyers to allow, it turns their iconic rodent, or someone dressed him, into a psychotic killer.

A film like The Mouse Trap is only possible because the original Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie, finally slipped out from under copyright protection and into the public domain. So now Mickey, or the version of him in that cartoon, is fair game for other filmmakers. Something that a Star Wars-style open text crawl reminds the viewer of.

An arcade after hours holds unexpected scares in The Mouse Trap. Friends celebrate a birthday at FunHaven, unaware of the terror that lurks among the skate-ball lanes and pinball machines. When the manager locks them inside, a masked menace starts picking them off. But this is no ordinary killer—it’s Mickey Mouse himself, harnessing supernatural powers from a cursed cartoon.

The concept taps nostalgia with its 90s arcade throwback while putting a horror twist on the debut of public domain Mickey. But delivering the goods proves tricky. Potential for creepy fun exists in the eerie setting, yet the execution is part clunky, part cheeky. The acting ranges from solid anchors to weak links. Efforts to balance horror and humor often clash more than complement.

For all its flaws, The Mouse Trap shows flickers of what could be. When it commits to chills over cringe, an unsettling atmosphere takes hold.
