10 Romance Anime for Fans of This Iconic '90s Anime Couple
Image
Sailor Moon set the standard for magical girl, shojo, and romance anime. It follows Sailor Moon's love story with Tuxedo Mask in their current lives, and in their past lives as princess of the Moon Kingdom and prince of Earth. They have a swoon-worthy story, where they meet as their celestial alter egos, and they immediately feel a pull toward one another.

Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask have a bit of a tsundere dynamic in the '90s anime adaptation, and tsundere romances will always be popular in romance anime. After the first story arc, their romance becomes more nuanced. Their romance is so iconic that it popularized certain character tropes and inspired elements of future romance anime.

Everyone’s Favorite Romance Anime was Treated in the Worst Possible Way When its Ending Got Reduced to Random OVAs
Image
Kamisama Kiss is one of the forerunners of Shojo anime and manga in terms of popularity. From top-notch romance to belly-tickling comedy, the series has it all. Its anime adaptation is also appreciated by fans, except for one grave failure.

The anime adaptation of Kamisama Kiss makes the plot easier to understand and offers a faster pace. However, fans can never forgive how their favorite series was dishonored by not receiving a proper ending. In fact, the conclusion of the anime was never offered in a seasonal episode format but rather as an Ova.

One Of The Best Romance Anime Of All Time Is An Underrated Masterpiece, But There's One Thing Holding It Back From Being Huge
Image
When it comes to shojo romance anime, old classics like Fruits Basket and Kimi no Todoke are usually the first to come to mind, and while these series no doubt deserve the love they receive, one particularly underrated series often flies under the radar. Kamisama Kiss by Julietta Suzuki is arguably one of the best shojo romance anime of all time, but there's one thing holding it back from being as big as others in the genre.

Despite having aired twelve years ago, Kamisama Kiss remains one of the most unique shojo romance anime of its kind. Though the story makes use of many typical clichs, its saccharine and spunky protagonist, heart-fluttering supernatural romance, and simple yet heartfelt underlying story easily win viewers over. However, the anime's incomplete adaptation and highly condensed ending arguably hold the series back from being one of the greats, while the manga's inaccessibility highlights a...

Best Kitsune Anime for Fans of the Fox Spirit
Image
Kitsune anime is a subgenre popularized by the famous nine-tailed fox in Japanese folklore. Given the mystery surrounding its supernatural existence, aesthetically pleasing character designs and otherworldly personalities in pop culture, many are drawn to this mystical being that can shift between human and fox. This makes it one of the most ubiquitous mythological creatures in anime.

Many might recognize a certain nine-tailed take on the kitsune, but the anime it hails from isn't the only one with the mystical foxes. There are numerous shows that have their own take on the concept, interpreting the animal in a variety of ways. From cute fox children to dangerous demons, these iterations of the kitsune legend make the creature out to be far more than just sly.

Updated by Timothy Blake Donohoo on February 7, 2024: The kitsune is one of the most recognizable aspects of Japanese mythology and folklore. That's showcased in numerous anime,...

Anime Characters Who Got Rejected By Their Love Interest
Image
Confessions in anime are always a big deal. The confessor spends too long overthinking the situation, works up the nerve, and then makes a dramatic show of asking out their love interest. It's a trope as old as the genre itself, and any anime fan has seen it dozens of times before. However, some characters don't get their happily ever after in romantic comedies.

Despite its prevalence within the genre, many shows have come up with unique takes on the confession scene. Some start with confessions right off the bat, while others save them for a later point in the story. As for the result, there can only be one of two answers: an acceptance or a rejection, both of which carry some serious emotional weight.

Updated on November 12, 2023, by Alexandra Locke: Not every anime love confession has a happy ending. More and more characters are finding themselves unlucky in love.

How Kamisama Kiss Embraces Shojo Clichés, Ranked
Image
The Kamisama Kiss anime may be short-lived, but it is a classic romance shojo. It takes beloved tropes and breathes new life and creativity into them. Tsundere love interests can be old-hat, but Tomoe is so humorous and complicated that he stands out from the crowd.

Nanami, likewise, is a traditional deredere protagonist, but she's smart and kind enough to be likable instead of flat or trite. Nanami becomes a Land God, following in the steps of shojo protagonists like Miaka from Fushigi Yugi. But the spirit world she must learn to navigate is delightfully strange, and not totally an isekai world, like in traditional fantasy anime. It exists alongside the human world and is filled with a number of colorful characters.
