Doc set for global theatrical release in October.

Production has begun on the third film in The Vladar Company’s fitness series Generation Iron .

A global theatrical release for Generation Iron 3 is scheduled for October. The film includes interviews with bodybuilding and fitness icons from around the world and asks what constitutes the perfect physique.

Talking heads include Kai Greene, Chris Bumstead, Felipe Franco, Varinder Singh Ghumman, Ct Fletcher, Rafael Brandao, and Sheru Aangrish.

In addition to the theatrical release, the documentary will also receive a global VOD/digital release on iTunes and Amazon.

Mickey Rourke narrated Generation Iron, which grossed close to $1m theatrically in 2013. The 2017 follow-up, Generation Iron 2 (pictured), topped the documentary charts on iTunes.

New York-based The Vladar Company has been talking with buyers on a trio of new titles led by mixed martial arts documentary The Hurt Business.

Ksm has acquired German rights to the film, which will chronicle the lives of indomitable Ufc Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey [pictured], Ufc Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones and former Ufc light-heavyweight champion Rashad ‘Suga’ Evans.

Vladar co-founder Vlad Yudin, whose credits include Generation Iron, will direct and serve as executive producer alongside co-founder Edwin Mejia and Jim Czarnecki.

Madman has picked up Australian and New Zealand rights to this as well as to the fashion designer documentary Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer.

Generation Iron, a semi-sequel to the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary Pumping Iron (the film is exec produced by Jerome Gary, producer on the Schwarzenegger doc), is a documentary film which follows a group of body builders all of whom are competing for the much coveted Olympia title. If they win this, they are officially the greatest body builder in the world. Generation Iron looks at the different techniques used by these competitors to achieve the body of their dreams, and how far they are willing to go to become Mr. Olympia.

This film is a very interesting look at the professional sport of body building, covering a large aspect of the competitor’s lives.

Joe Berlinger’s Whitey: The United States Of America V. James J Bulger premiered at Sundance. Separately, Phase 4 Films and The Vladar Company will extend the Canadian release of Generation Iron.

Magnolia plans a day-and-date theatrical and on-demand release in June for Whitey: The United States Of America V. James J Bulger, followed by broadcast on CNN later this year. The companies previously collaborated on Blackfish.

The documentary profiles the Irish gangster and exposes the culture of law enforcement complicity against the backdrop of Bulger’s reign of terror in South Boston. RadicalMedia produced the documentary for CNN Films. Magnolia brokered the deal with Cinetic Media for the filmmakers and CNN Films.

Phase 4 Films and The Vladar Company are to expand the release of bodybuilding documentary Generation Iron in Canada.

The film premiered in Canada on September 20 2013 and Phase 4 Films will release on DVD, on-demand and digital download.

Signature Entertainment has secured a raft of new acquisitions to be released over the coming year.

The films will include the UK distributor’s biggest theatrical release to date, The Legends of Oz: Dorothy Returns, a $70m animation featuring the voices of Lea Michele, Kelsey Grammer, Hugh Dancy, Patrick Stewart and Dan Aykroyd.

The deal, inked with Hyde Park, will see the film released in UK cinemas this May.

Other acquisitions include music documentary Made In America, from The Exchange. Ron Howard directs and Brian Grazer produces with Jay-z, following the hip-hop artist’s “Made In America” music festival, from inception to execution.

Additional new titles include:

The power of prayer has failed to save The Christmas Candle, the new release from Rick Santorum's faith based film studio, EchoLight.

The Christmas Candle, set in the fictional English village of Gladbury and billed as "a timeless holiday film for the entire family", attracted widespread critical scorn as well as dismal box-office results, having grossed just over $1.6m (£988,000) after two weeks on release.

The bad reviews were perhaps predictable, with the New York Daily News saying: "This odd Dickens-meets-Sunday-school movie is as artless as the setup is muddled", while the New York Post judged: "This throwback, made-for-tv-style film takes the easy way out in a cheesy climax, but its resolute quaintness may appeal to the kind of viewers who regard electricity as disturbingly newfangled.

Some might consider some of the films I appreciate to be strange, but with ‘Generation Iron,’ I found a documentary film that was completely foreign to my way of seeing the world. Frankly, I wanted to be objective about the film, giving its subject matter the appreciation and interest that it deserves.

Over the years, I have occasionally seen a cover of a body building magazine and been disgusted: The men and woman on the covers look like bloated pieces of bacon, a Bosch like nightmare, a surreal nightmare of human anatomy.

However, this turned out to be an all-around, superb documentary. Still, it is a bit strange to watch: There is something pornographic, something superficial about the imagery, but as I watched it, the movie slowly gained my respect. Why? Well, learning the life stories and goals of the body builders perceptibly opened a door...

Maybe it’s all Hollywood’s fault, but when I visualize guys with muscles bigger than my head, I think, “meatheads”, “dummies”, all those very not nice things. Turns out, maybe not so much. Or rather, the sport they've dedicated their entire lives to. Despite the hardcore, no-excuses nature of bodybuilding this documentary seems to have a softer side, touching upon the drugs, mental challenges and emotional struggles they experience. Mickey Rourke will be the voice of a body building documentary titled Generation Iron, for the Vladar Co. The doc is scheduled for release in September.

The film follows the world’s top seven bodybuilders as they compete to bring home the coveted “Mr. Olympia” title. Vlad Yudin is directing and co-producing the film with partner Edwin Mejia for Vladar Co., and in partnership with American Media Inc.

Jerome Gary, who produced the 1977 docudrama Pumping Iron, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, is exec producing alongside Ami’s David J. Pecker.

According to THR, this film “explores the widely misunderstood world of bodybuilding.”

Yudin wanted to make a film about body building because he felt there hadn’t been an in-depth account of the sport in a long time.

As the New York Comic Convention started this Thursday, I was able to get a interview with Vlad Yudin, a Russian filmmaker and producer, who is making Head Smash, a film based on a comic book that Vlad Yudin created himself.
