Arcade Fire ‘Pink Elephant’ Review: A Dubious and Stylistically Disjointed Effort
Image
Just as dramatic as Arcade Fire’s ascent to indie-rock royalty in the early-to-mid 2010s has been the Canadian band’s commercial and critical decline over the last 10 years. There was once a rigor to Win Butler and Régine Chassagne’s songwriting that seems to have been irrevocably lost, and their seventh studio album, Pink Elephant, plays like two or more stylistically incompatible efforts competing for dominance.

Following an extraneous instrumental opening track, the album proper begins with two lo-fi rock songs, the title track and “Year of the Snake”—an apparent course correction for Arcade Fire after three slickly produced releases in a row. These songs sound like YouTube tutorials on what can be achieved with a single SM57 microphone and basic recording software, but the barebones approach highlights a pleasing slide into a minor-key middle eight on “Pink Elephant,” resolving with a clever lyrical reference to the basis...

Netflix canceled the most shows in 2024 (more than any other streamer or network)
Image
Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.

In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

Netflix canceled 17 shows in 2024 (and only 1 deserved it)
Image
We're at the end of 2024, and you know what that means. It's time to look back at what all happened this year. We'll start off by saying that it's been a rollercoaster of a year for many of the streaming services, especially Netflix. While there were many renewals from the streamer, there were also some cancellations.

This year, the streaming powerhouse pulled the plug on 17 of its original series, and there's even a chance there will be more cancellations since 2024 isn't quite over yet. Obviously, a show getting canceled is never a good thing, and it sucks for the people who were hoping for additional installments. However, there's one Netflix show that got the boot this year that we're not exactly sad about.

In this article, we shared all the Netflix show cancellations from this year as well as discussed why we weren't necessarily hurt by one of the shows being axed.

Rivals episode 3 review | Dance dance revelation
O'Hara United States Treasury (1971)
It’s party time at Castle O’Hara in the 80s drama’s third episode. Here’s our Rivals episode 3 review.

Order a truckload of mistletoe and baste up the turkey, it’s a Christmas episode! This being Rivals, of course, that means opening with a bit of Rupert roleplay in a Santa suit and immediately skipping forward to New Year’s Eve – a celebration much more conducive to snogging strangers and quaffing absurd amounts of champagne. Maud O’Hara is hosting a party and, much to Declan’s irritation, she’s invited everyone even tangentially related to the plot so far (and a camel). Oops!

In what’s quickly becoming a habit, poor Taggie has been put on chef/serving staff/cloakroom attendant duty. Quite how she’s made the step up from last episode’s twelve-person dinner party to a star-studded knees-up big enough to attract a member of...

Apple TV+’s series The Buccaneers is taking on a new crew member.

Leighton Meester is joining the period drama for its forthcoming second season. Details on the character the former Gossip Girl and Single Parents star will play are being kept quiet for now.

How to Train Your Dragon: What to Expect From the Live-Action Adaptation
Image
With the announcement of a live-action adaptation of the highly successful animated feature film How to Train Your Dragon, many are quick to question the true intentions of the creators at Dreamworks and Universal. Though some scoff at the mere mention of a new reboot, there should be reasonable anticipation for the potential narratives and creative possibilities of an expanded Dragon universe.

The odds are surely stacked against Universal. Audiences and critics seem to be weary of the exhaustive effort Disney has put into their live-action adaptations. Starting with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney has repeatedly brought their animated favorites to real life with upcoming releases including Snow White, Moana, and Lilo & Stitch.

Universal has also struggled to launch an expanded cinematic universe. Their unsuccessful Dark Universe, initiated by Tom Cruise’s Mummy adaptation, failed enough to shut down the whole operation. Fast & Furious is currently delayed due to...

Exclusive: The Crown‘s success has helped bestow gifts upon the employees of Left Bank Pictures.

As the curtain fell on the Netflix series, staffers at the British production company pocketed bonuses totaling more than £10M ($13M) in March last year.

The payday was disclosed in a UK Companies House filing by Sony Pictures Television, which loaned Left Bank £10.1M to fund the financial incentive.

Sony and Left Bank declined to comment on the reasons for the bonus and whether it was out of the ordinary, but it coincided with filming wrapping on The Crown’s final season last April.

Left Bank’s website shows the company has 36 members of staff, meaning the bonuses would have averaged out at more than £280,000 per employee.

In an interview with Deadline last year, Left Bank CEO Andy Harries reflected on the achievements of The Crown, describing it as the “Everest” of British television.

Mia In ‘Everything Now,’ Explained: Why Is Mia Unable To Recover?
Image
On the outside, Everything Now looks like just another good old shiny Netflix teen drama with perfect aesthetics and a beautiful cast of people who everyone wants to be friends with. However, the show dives deep into an eating disorder through the lens of the main character, Mia. Funny, charming, witty, shy, and a little bit obnoxious, Mia is in search of the basic teen experience in every way, even though that’s not what her life is like. In typical fashion, Everything Now begins dramatically when Mia finally returns from the recovery clinic for her eating disorder. It’s been 7 months since she was sent in, and she finally appears to be “healthier” than before. Although this is just a physical representation of her health. What most people don’t understand when they see Mia is that even the smallest thing is a huge trigger for her mental health.

‘Everything Now’ Review: Everything Euphoria Wishes It Were
Image
As if we didn’t have enough coming-of-age shows, Netflix keeps serving them up faster than you can say “teen angst.” No, really, this is a genre that has been capitalized on since time immemorial, but recently, it’s really getting out of hand. As is common with angsty teenagery things, most of these shows are based on trends and what’s big in the world at the moment. Everything Now feels like an amalgamation of all things good about Euphoria, Sex Education, and Heartbreak High. Everything Now is aptly titled because it really does engage nicely with everything that is “now.” I thought it was fantastic that we got Bottoms this year, written by talented young people, but here we have a 22-year-old who has already learned the ropes perfectly well. Taking notes from popular shows of the present and the past, Ripley Parker delightfully creates a real-world feeling...

Netflix New Releases: October 2023
Image
There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!

Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).

Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.

Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.

And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

‘Outlander’ Editor Jack Goessens Sets Out for Directorial Debut With Trans Coming-of-Age Project ‘Boifriend’ (Exclusive)
Image
It was director Jack Goessens’ own experience as a trans man that inspired his feature debut, “Boifriend.” “The story is based on my personal journey as a trans man figuring out my identity. When I started my transition, I was often asked: ‘How do you know? And how did you get to that conclusion?’ And I thought this was interesting because trans films usually start from the beginning point of the transition and don’t often talk about how trans people figured out they were trans.”

One of 20 projects selected at this year’s CineMart — the co-production market at the International Film Festival Rotterdam — “Boifriend” tells the story of Tegan, a “fresh-faced lesbian plagued by disturbing visions of dysphoria and euphoria” as “she starts to question her identity and place in the community.” The film is described by Goessens as “a character-driven, coming-of-age story exploring the feelings of gender dysphoria and euphoria.
