Sumac, Love in Shadow | ★★★ 1/2
Keiji Haino and Sumac, American Dollar Bill – Keep Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous To Look at Face On | ★★★★
Sumac is an extreme metal power trio with seemingly no boundaries, jazz-like interplay and a hankering for noises both brittle and extreme, sparse and overwhelming. Leader Aaron Turner – former of Isis – stresses in interviews that “heavy” can mean a lot more than just riff bludgeon, and Sumac’s big-tent vision is patient and satisfying, reminiscent of what labelmates Tortoise did for rock music: just replace vinyl-collector obsessions with krautrock,...

Director: Alex Orwell.
Writer: Kenny Yakkel.
Cast: Texas Battle, Alexandra Staden, Victor McGuire and Adam Rayner.
The reality television based horror film is a difficult genre to pull off. From WatchUsDie.Com (2001) to FeardotCom (2002) and even farther back to the Running Man (1987), there have been a lot of films that try to capitalize on reality shows and their weak messages of the price of fame. The Task, a movie from After Dark Films, begins like a few of the films mentioned above, but Kenny Yakkel's script gains momentum as time ticks down. Overall, the film asks viewers to question what is real and what is not real? These are two questions that allow The Task to provide an interesting, unexpected twist ending.

A group of reality show contestants are assigned a series of tasks to complete while locked overnight in an abandoned prison, but things take a turn for the dangerous when the spirit of a sadistic warden shows up to kill everyone off.
An abandoned prison setting where there is all kinds of gruesome ways for the characters to die. A ghost story that comes to life. This should have been a homerun, but The Task ends up missing the mark. The Task should have been scary. It should have been intense. The material lends itself to it. However, with The Task that sense of terror never comes alive. With the setting, that sense of menace, of fear is never palpable. The deaths lack the kind of impact that they should have had.

In the After Dark Original The Task, coming to DVD tomorrow, July 26 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, a group of students take part in a reality show where they compete for a big cash prize by undertaking frightening missions within an abandoned prison. Needless to say, there’s evil within those walls that turns the contest into a fight for survival. Perhaps better suited to survive than most of his fellow players is Dixon, since he’s portrayed by Texas Battle, an actor with considerable horror experience from Final Destination 3, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End and the low-budget creature features Hydra and the upcoming Boggy Creek.

The Task is one of eight straight-to-dvd horror films released this year by After Dark as part of their ‘Originals’ series. Direct-to-video output is quite often a way for production companies to make a decent amount of money by producing hugely inferior sequels to brand name movies without spending very much. However, it can also be a training ground for up and coming talent who don’t yet have the support of the major studios. Oh and horror films are a direct-to-video staple.
After Dark films are champions of new horror talent and, together with Lionsgate and SyFy, have built upon their HorrorFest: 8 Films to Die For by setting up a second horror festival called After Dark Originals. Their aim is to produce and show brand new horror films from original scripts at a festival in January of each year and then release them on DVD to what could potentially...

Remember the remake of House on Haunted Hill and its sequel the truly horrible Return to the House on Haunted Hill? It’s a well worked out structure for a movie and it’ll work again right? That seems to be the concept of The Task.
Six young students are kidnapped off the streets and dumped outside of an abandoned prison where they are reminded that they all applied to be in a new reality show. Congratulating them the makers then proceed lock them in the prison telling them that they will have to all do tasks to escape and be the victor of the show. We’ve all seen our fair share of reality TV disasters, but fistfights, mental breakdowns and drunken rages can’t quite compare to what the stars of The Task have to face. The film is one of After Dark Original’s eight 2011 productions. It focuses on a group of reality show contestants required to complete a series of tasks inside an abandoned prison. The winner gets a hefty prize, but before they can get their hands on the cash, they must battle forces that even catch the show’s production team off guards - some malicious and violent spirits. Starring as one of the six contestants is The Bold and the Beautiful’s Texas Battle. [...]...

Finally!! After Dark Films has finally unleashed a trailer that showcases all 8 of their horror films in the After Dark Originals lineup.
After Dark Films made an unprecedented commitment to the production of eight original horror films this year under the After Dark Originals label, continuing the Company’s mantra of supporting first time independent film writers and directors. The creation of the Ad Originals(http://www.afterdarkoriginals.com/) slate is just another example of the Company’s commitment to the Indie film industry.
Unlike After Dark’s “8 Films To Die For®”, After Dark Originals are wholly financed and produced by After Dark Films. The Ado slate runs the gamut of the genre, from paranormal phenomena, black magic, and vengeful ghosts to psychological trauma, murderous psychopaths, vampires and the undead.

The movie trailer for the upcoming horror film from After Dark Originals called "The Task" has been released and we have it for you to view below. You can see it below the creepy international one-sheet poster and synopsis below below.
Not sure what I think about the flick so far, but I'm hoping it is better than the trailer suggests. Not a terrible concept, but one that feels a bit over done to me. I mean, didn't we kind of see this idea in one of the Halloween sequels? Maybe I'm just burnt out on all things "reality show".
The Task was written by Kenny Yakkel, directed by Simon Fellows (Malice in Wonderland, Blessed) and stars Texas Battle (Dixon), Alexandra Staden (Connie), Adam Raynor (Taylor). Enjoy.

Fertile Ground is the latest in the so-far-5 films made by After Dark Originals starring Leisha Hailey. Major Suckage, or Yay-ness?
I haven't seen it yet, so how could I know? We don't even have a trailer, man!
After Dark Originals: A New Brand of Fear is the latest development (with a little help from Lionsgate) from the people that started Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For in 2006. Most of the films, which would normally have gone straight-to-dvd, were very hit and miss. Though the label presented the films as 'too shocking for theaters' (and then proceeded to show them in theaters), what was soon discivered was that the real issue wasn't that they were 'too' shocking, but rather that the films fell into the grey area of too high budget to Not be screened theatrically, but lacking in a serious way in the plot, scares, or 'other' department that made...
